Wellsville, NY - Lila Mayme Johnston, 89, of Proctor Road passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Highland Park Healthcare Center. She was born on September 25, 1926, near Whitesville, the first born of Chester H. and Katherine Ann (Mattison) Norton.
She attended school in West Jasper, Whitesville, Turtle Point, PA, Shongo and Wellsville. On May 14, 1943, on Beach Hill, Willing Township, she married Ervin E. Johnston, who predeceased her on June 20, 1998. After marriage, Lila and Ervin resided on Beach Hill and later on the McCurdy Road in Shongo for 51 years. For the last 22 years, she lived with her daughter on Proctor Road in Wellsville. Lila was first employed as a housekeeper, then worked at Mapes Woodworking Plant in Wellsville and finally she was a nurse’s aide at Highland Nursing Home for 15 years. She loved taking care of her family, cooking, canning, gardening, sewing, reading, and frequenting garage sales. Experimenting with new recipes was one of her delights, as well as collecting cookbooks. Lila took great pleasure in feeding a family of crows which her children dubbed, “Mama’s fat chickens.”
During the years in Shongo, Lila enjoyed attending the Shongo Community Club and served for many years as the secretary of the Shongo branch of the United Methodist Women.
Survivors include three daughters, Katherine A. Grimmett of Toledo, OH, Phyllis E. Johnston of Wellsville and Marcia L. Hood of Rochester, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one great-great grandson, a brother, Robert W. Norton of Whitesville and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her husband by a grandson, Michael J. Grimmett, a sister, Lena J. Madison and a brother, Hoyt H. Norton.
