Harold James Anderson Jr.

Bergen, NY - Harold James Anderson Jr., age 67, of Sackett Road in Bergen passed away on Monday May 28, 2018 in Brockport.  He was born on November 29, 1950 in Rochester to Harold and and Stephine Kusuda Anderson. On April 23, 1977 in LeRoy he married Ruby Freeman who survives.

Harold was a life long resident of Bergen who graduated from Byron Bergen Central School.

He retired from Kodak in 2006 after 34 years of service. He enjoyed motorcycles, tinkering on cars and working on antique clocks.

Besides his wife, Ruby, Harold is survived by 2 sisters, Marjorie Wallace of Bergen, and Carolyn Stimson of Chelsea, OK.;a brother in law, Ronald (June)  Freeman; a sister in law, Bonita Freeman; several nieces and nephews.

Harold was predeceased by his parents; 2 brothers, George Anderson, and John Anderson; a brother in law, Douglas Freeman; a sister in law, Shirley Hamilton.

Friends are invited to call at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville, on Monday June 4, 2018, from 1 to 2 pm, at which time a funeral service will take place. Jeffrey West Sortore

Franklinville, NY - Jeffrey West Sortore, age 67, of Franklinville passed away on Sunday , May 26, 2018 at the Olean General Hospital. He was born on May 31, 1950 in Wellsville to John and Geanne Morey Sortore. On February 14, 1985 he married Anna Colunio who survives.

Jeff  grew up in Belmont from where he graduated from High School. In 1983 he earned a Bachelors Degree and in 1988 he earned his Masters Degree both from St. Bonaventure University. He started his teaching career with BOCES and retired from West Valley Central School after 33 years of teaching English. He kept busy during the summer months teaching Summer School at many different school districts and spent a few summers working at the Marina on Rushford Lake. In a recent article in the Olean Times Herald Thomas Randolph said  this,“He was a teacher all students would love to have, caring, funny, and teaching for all the right reasons. He also served as coach of the girls' soccer team and as advisor for the annual plays”. Jeff's love of all motor sports led him, along with Thomas Randolph, to start a newspaper dedicated to motor sports. Jeff later became a contributing writer of motor sports to the Olean Times Herald. He was a member of the West Valley Teacher's Union where he was a negotiator for the Union and was a volunteer for the Cattaraugus County SPCA.

Surviving beside his wife Anna are 2 sons, Kelly Tighe of Aberdeen, MD., and Christian (Donna)  Tighe of Ellicotville; 2 daughters, Emily Sortore of Chatham, VA., and Jennifer (Matt)  Bogumil of Ithaca; 4 grandchildren, Elisa, Tia, Olivia, and Cameron; a sister, Anne Sortore of Belmont. The family would like to thank all his friends for all they have done for Jeff especially Mike Tronetti, Leonard Presutti, and Thomas Randolph.

Lois G. Perkins

Wellsville, NY - Lois G. Perkins, age 86, of Trapping Brook Road passed away on Saturday May 26, 2018 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born on July 24, 1931 in Belmont to the late Earl and Glada Mayo Hough. On February 27, 1954 she married Eugene Perkins who predeceased her in 2005.

Lois was a long time resident of Hallsport. She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl (Bob)  Young of Wellsville; 2 sons, Michael Perkins of Wellsville , and Craig Perkins of Hallsport; 4 grandchildren, 11 grandchildren, and 2 nieces.

Lois was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son Darrell Perkins, 3 brothers, and a sister.

Phyllis F. Perry

Allentown, NY - Phyllis F. Perry, 92, of 1948 Melvina Street passed away at home on Thursday, May 24, 2018. She was born on November 9, 1925 in Belmont, the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret M. (Nick) Hollister Sr. On December 7, 1944 in Greenwood, she married Clark W. Perry Sr. who predeceased her on June 16, 1999.

Phyllis was raised in Belmont and was a 1943 graduate of Belmont High School. She and Clark moved to Allentown in  July of 1950. She was a member of the Wellsville Moose Lodge 601, and the Alma Rod and Gun Club. 

She is survived by five children, Clark W. (Deborah) Perry Jr. of Allentown, Roger L. (Pamela) Perry of Scio, Sheila D. Decker of Wellsville, Christine E. (Michael) Ward of Andover, and Charles H. (Cheryl) Perry of Bolivar, 14 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her husband, by a daughter, Dale Louise Hodge on January 16, 1999, and by a brother, David Arlow Hollister on July 16, 2004.

Peter M. Schuyler

Wellsville, NY - Peter M. Schuyler age, 73, of East State Street, passed away on Monday May 7, 2018 at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 12, 1944 in Wellsville to Horace and Lillian Schuyler who both predeceased him.

Peter graduated from Wellsville Central High School in 1962. He attended Alfred State College and later enlisted in the US Coast Guard serving honorably from 1965 until late 1968. Peter later worked for CTC in Andover.

Peter is survive by an cousin and several friends.

Francis G. White

Hornell, NY - Francis G. White, age 83, of  Almond passed away on Wednesday May 16, 2018 at Elderwood of Hornell. He was born on June 14, 1934 in North Hornell to Glenn and Blanch Van Skiver White.

Francis retired from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and enjoyed farming.

Gary E. Brownell



Wellsville, NY - Gary E. Brownell, 69, of 20 Clark Street passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born March 15, 1949 in Wellsville, the son of Hartrick and Virginia (Empson) Brownell Sr. 


Gary was a 1968 graduate of Wellsville High School, and was a veteran of the U. S. Army from 1970 to 1972. He was employed for many years at C. E. Air Preheater Company in Wellsville and later for Kodak in Rochester. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling. 

He is survived by two daughters, Tammy Kelly of Florida and Terrina “Terry” Santiago of Illinois, one son, Gary E. Brownell of Wellsville, 14 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, three brothers, Butch Brownell and Larry Brownell both of Wellsville, and Mike Brownell of Winter Haven, Fl, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, who were affectionately known as Bud and Ginny, and by a daughter Monique Brownell.

Frances C. Deschler

Wellsville, NY - Frances C. Deschler, 99, of 4192A Bolivar Road passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born May 1, 1919 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Henry W. and Amelia (Weihoneig) Deschler.

Frances was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception School, and a 1937 graduate of Wellsville High School. She was employed at Worthington Corporation in Wellsville for 47 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member to the Worthington Corporation, Management Club and the Immaculate Conception Church, Altar and Rosary Society.

She is survived by a nephew, Donald Deschler of Wellsville, and a niece, Susan (Brian) Robinson of Longs, SC, a great niece, Brieanna Sarcia, and three great nephews, Christian, Aaron, and Andrew Robinson. She was predeceased in addition to her parents, by her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and June Deschler, and her fiance` Edward Dorney, who was killed in action, at Omaha Beach on D-Day.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 11:00 am in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Peter S. Gambino

Belmont, NY - Peter S. Gambino, age 80, of the Old State Road passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester. He was born on December 30, 1937 in Hornell to the late Natale and Francesca Camaci Gambino. On October 5, 1966 in Genesee, PA. He married Jean O'Keefe who predeceased him on February 16, 2014.

Peter was a long time resident of the Belmont area. He graduated from St Ann's Catholic School in Hornell and from Hornell High School. For a time he worked for the Erie Lackawanna Rail Road in Hornell and retired in 1994 from the Alfred Sate College Public Safety after 28 years of service. He had been a member of the St. Ann's Church now Our Lady of the Valley Church in Hornell, the Hornell K of C, and the Hudson Valley Kiwanis Club. Peter's passion was gardening especially garlic. Along with his family he owned and operated Gambino Garlic Growers and sold garlic at many festivals and farmers markets. He was a huge college basketball fan, he especially enjoyed attending St. Bonaventure's home games. He was  a devoted family man who supported his children and grandchildren's sporting events and other special occasions. He will be remembered for Wisdom and his tremendous sense of humor.

Survivors include 3 sons, John (Ellen)  Donovan of Arkport, Daniel Gambino (Kari Manning)  of Frederick MD., and Peter (Nichole)  Gambino of Belmont; 3 daughters, Roberta (Ted)  Seeley of Belmont, Susan (James)  Rosenberger of Belmont, and Mary Frances (Douglas Eakins)  Gambino of North Palm Beach, FL.; 20 grandchildren, Deborah Roberts, Marcia Seeley, Theodore Seeley, Justin Seeley, Jamie Kud, Jennifer Kud,Patrick Kud, Sabra Donovan, Joseph Donovan, Jeannette Donovan, Brandy Rosenberger, Stacy Alsworth, Jill Ordiway, Natalie Gerber, Daniel Gerber, Jenna Gambino, Arielle Vargo, Sophia Gambino, Salvatore Gambino, and Michelle Millington; 13 great grandchildren; a brother, Matthew Gambino; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, a daughter and son in law, Elisabeth (James)  Kud, 2 grandsons, and a great grandson.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, May 11, 2108 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Belmont. A prayer service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday in the Funeral Home followed by a Service with a Deacon at 11 am at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Belmont. Loretta Mae Lovel

Wellsville, NY - Loretta Mae Lovel entered into the joy of her Lord on May 4, 2018 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center surrounded by family. She received tender loving care from her extended family at the Wellsville Manor Care Center for the past 4 1/2 years. 

She was born in Westfield, PA on March 13, 1929 to Edith (Snyder) and Harold H Stone. 

Growing up in Harrison Valley, PA she graduated from the Harrison Valley High School, attended Lock Haven State Teacher College and Graduated from the Rochester Business Institute. 

On February 14, 1953 she married Arthur Lovel at her parent’s home in Harrison Valley and they made their family home in Wellsville, NY.

She attended and participated for many years in the Wellsville Christian Temple Church and became an active member of the Wellsville First United Methodist Church.

She cherished all the many happy times spent camping, playing the piano, and other activities with family and friends. She was active in the Family Campers and RVers organization, including the P.A.L.S., 39ers, and Top of the Hill Chapters. She painted many beautiful pictures that are presently displayed in the homes of many family and friends.

Surviving is her husband Arthur Lovel, daughter Connie (David) Ramsey, son Curtis (Mary Lou) Lovel and daughter Camille (Todd) Kenny and sister Geraldine (Stone) Wood.

Also surviving are grandchildren; Christopher (Megan) Ramsey, Kimberly (Nat) Wilson, Derek (Stephanie) Lovel, Brian (Miranda) Ramsey, Jordan Byrd, and Dustin (Emily) Kenny ;  great grandchildren Bennett Wilson, Isabella Wilson, Hailey Wilson and Hayes Ramsey. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins including Linda and Nyhl Austin.

Loretta’s family will receive Friends on Sunday May 6th, 2018 with visitation from 1:00 to 3:00 at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, 34 State Street, Wellsville, NY.  Following visitation a funeral service will be held with Rev. Gregory  DeSalvatore  officiating with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Laura A. Bess

Avoca, New York - Laura A. Bess, age 40, of Grant Street, passed away at home on May 1, 2018. She was born in Wellsville on November 24, 1977 to William and Sally Bliven Dodge. She was the loving wife of Donald Bess Sr. who survives her.

Laura attended Arkport Central School class of 1996. She enjoyed Nursing, music, laughter, life, and most of all her family and friends. Laura was employed at the Bath V.A. as a Registered Nurse. She was awarded an honorary master degree from the University of Binghamton, class of 2018, as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Laura is survived by her husband Donald; her son, Brett Ogden; her daughter, Skyler Partridge; her Mother and Father; her sister, Stacey Nieves; a brother, Jason Dodge; a niece, Emily; a nephew, Alex; as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and very special friends.
