Amelia Jane McCarty, 77

Belmont, NY – Amelia Jane McCarty, 77, of Greenwich Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at The Pines Nursing Home in Machias, NY. She was born on April 17, 1945 in Wellsville the daughter of the late Clayton William and Ida Leona (Brown) Green. In October of 1989 she married Robert “Bob” McCarty, who survives.

Jane was raised in Belmont, and graduated in 1963 from Belmont High School. During her first marriage, she was able to travel the world due to military obligation. After parting ways and returning home, she began her own business as a Process Server for several local lawyers, especially Patricia Fogarty, she retired in 2010. Outside of her employment, she was a coordinator for the local Toys for Tots, and a founding member of the Amity Rescue Squad Auxiliary. She attended both The United Methodist Church and Baptist Church of Belmont. Overall, she was an active member of the community, and when someone called she would be there, and if she didn’t have the time – she’d make it. To her family, she was best known as Nana. She adored all her grandchildren, and especially loved working with them in her renowned flower garden that anybody who has passed her home would recognize. 

In addition to her husband of 33 years, Bob, she is survived by: two sons, Clayton L. (Jaimie) Hulin of Franklinville, and Wayne L. (Ann-Marie) Hulin of Richburg; three step-daughters, Teresa (David) Glass of Belmont, Loretta (Matt) O’Connor of Lowville, NY, and Dolores (Scott) Tudor of North Carolina; fifteen grandchildren, Stephanie Hulin, Amy (Alex) Velijovski, Wayne Hulin Jr., Chris (Brianna) Brewer, Alex (Ashley) Hulin, Amelia Hulin, Olivia Hulin, Camden Hulin, Beth Glass, Garrett Glass, Corey Glass, Tanecia Glass, Alyssa O’Connor, Nicole O’Connor, and Brandon Tudor; five great-grandchildren, Alice, Ruby, and Emma Brewer, and Carly and Mason Hulin; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three siblings, an infant sister Shirly Green, Clayton Green Jr., and William Clayton (Meredith “Rita” Shuster-Green) Green.

Gary J. Frisk, 78

Belmont, NY –  Gary J. Frisk, 78, of 19 Willard Street passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Olean General Hospital following a brief illness. He was born June 2, 1944 in the Town of Urbana, the son of the late James and Vivian S. (Clayson) Frisk. On December 31, 1977 in Caneadea he married Ethel V. Cassady who survives.
Gary was a 1962 graduate of Hammondsport High School. He was first employed by the Taylor Wine Company in Hammondsport in the 1960’s. In October of 1971 he began his 35 year career with the Belmont Police Department as a part-time police officer, and retired as Chief of Police in May of 2006. He served on the Belmont Village Board, he was an avid golfer, and enjoyed watching the New York Yankees, and the Buffalo Bills. He loved family events, cooking, grilling, and his beloved canine companion, “Roscoe”
Surviving in addition to his wife Ethel, are two daughters, Brenda (Kurt) Schmidt of Hammondsport, and Kathleen (Dan) Moran of Nunda, six grandchildren, Amanda Jadwin, Christopher Schmidt, Jessica (Brandon) Schmidt-Monin, Matthew (Miranda) Moran, Kevin (Faith) Moran, and Megan (Tyler) Colegrove as well as  eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by an infant daughter, Deborah.

Mary C. Scheeder, 95

Scio, NY - Mary C. Scheeder, 95, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at Highland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wellsville. She was born June 22, 1927 in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Ernst W. and Charlotte (Dunnigan) Scheeder.

When Mary was a senior at East High School in Buffalo, she and other classmates were recruited to be fingerprint classifiers for the FBI in Washington, DC; because of the draft during WW II, there was a manpower shortage and the Bureau recruited young women replacements who did not require extensive character background investigations.

Mary began her three-year employment with FBI two weeks after her high school graduation in 1945. While in DC she earned a BS in Education from the former Wilson Teachers College and an MA in Education from American University. Following a year of teaching at Washington’s McFarland Junior High School. Mary returned to the Buffalo area, and taught at the Hamburg Junior High School, and later at Andover Central School. She then earned a master’s degree in Library Science from SUNY Geneseo and served as elementary school librarian at the Orchard Park School System for seven years, followed by ten years as the Allegany County BOCES librarian in Belmont. During her time with BOCES, she earned certification as a school administrator, with course work at Syracuse University and St. Bonaventure University.

Mary was later employed as a foster care case worker for the Allegany County Department of Social Services for two years. She retired to her mother’s homestead in Scio in 1967. She was a member and trustee of Holy Family Catholic Church in Belmont and a sacristan for St. Joseph’s Oratory in Scio. Mary received an award from Holy Family Parish for her many years of dedicated service to both parishes.

She is survived by a nephew, E. Clark Scheeder and his wife Stacey of Sherrills Ford, NC, two nieces, Elizabeth Golze of The Woodlands, TX, and Jennifer Hendricks of Pembroke Pines, FL, a great niece, Carlyn Scheeder, and a great nephew, Maxton Scheeder, and a sister-in-law, Mary H. Scheeder of Williamsville. She was predeceased in addition to her parents by a brother, Ernst W. Scheeder Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 17, 2023, at 12 Noon at St. Joseph’s Oratory in Scio. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Richard J. Rahr, 88

Scio, NY – Richard J. Rahr, 88, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at the Highland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wellsville. He was born August 29, 1934 in Wellsville the son of the late Henry and Carmel (Smith) Rahr. On July 24, 1965 in Wellsville he married Donna Magee who predeceased him on January 17, 2009.

Dick graduated from Wellsville High School. After graduation he joined the U. S. Coast Guard and served as an Aviation  Ordnance 3. He later graduated from Alfred State College, and was employed at Worthington/Dresser Rand Corporation for 33 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda (Rick Moses) Baker of  Addison, a son John (Melanie) Rahr of Horseheads, four grandchildren, Mary “Maggie” (Shawn Peterson) Stevens, Teague (Ashley Tostanoski) Baker, Meredith (Stephanie Stewart) Rahr and Thomas Rahr, five great-grandchildren, Damian, Chevy, Zzyzx, Ivar, and  Odin, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Rahr of Wellsville, special friends, Roy and Rosemary Cole of Scio, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Earl, Marion “Gus” Moir, and Rita Childs and a brother, Carl Rahr. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Immaculate Conception Church, 36 Maple Avenue in Wellsville. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Clark W. Perry Jr., 71

Allentown, NY – Clark W. Perry Jr., 71, of State Route 417, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023 in his home. He was born on April 19, 1951 in Wellsville the son of the late Clark Sr. and Phyllis F. (Hollister) Perry. On August 18, 1973 in Ellicottville, he married Deborah J. Block, who survives. 

Clark attended Allentown Union School, and was a 1969 graduate of Scio Central School. He then attended Jamestown Business College, graduating in 1972. He was drafted into the United States Army and served 1972 – 1974, serving during the Vietnam era at Fort Polk, Louisiana. After his honorable discharge he was employed by Carpet Town as an appliance repairman. In 1984 he was the owner and operator of Perry Appliance Repair, retiring in 2016. Outside his employment, he coached several local youth sports, including the Allentown Little League, and the Allentown Yellow Jacket T-ball and softball teams. As a basketball coach for Scio he was awarded the Paul Vienna Section V Coach of the Year Award, when the Girls Varsity Team won the 1993 Section V Championship. He was also a former member of the Allentown Volunteer Fire Department, the Wellsville Fast Pitch League, the Scio Board of Education, and member and past president of the IIABO (Basketball Official Association)

In addition to his wife of 49 years, Deborah, he is survived by: daughter, Donna Cicirello of Scio; son, Rod (Stephanie) Perry of Wellsville; three beloved grandchildren, Lauren Cicirello, Jack Cicirello, and Kennedy Perry; four siblings, Roger (Pam) Perry of Scio, Sheila Decker of Wellsville, Christine (Mike) Ward of Andover, and Charlie (Cheryl) Perry of Bolivar; brother-in-law, Leonard Hodge of Friendship; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Dale Hodge.

Karen L. Kane, 61

Wellsville, NY – Karen L. Kane, 61, formerly of Cummings Place, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023 in her home in Hornell. She was born in North Tonawanda on July 31, 1961, the daughter of George H. and Marilyn (Butzbach) Bryan.

Karen was a 1978 graduate of Andover High School. She attended Alfred State College where she earned her Associates Degree in Nursing. She was employed by St. James Hospital Mercy in Hornell. Outside of work, she loved singing and spending time with her grandchildren. 

She is survived by: seven children, Tara Price of Hornell, William (Rachel) Price of Andover, Kerry (Daniel) Bassage of Hornell, Donny (Brook) Kane of Wellsville, Kelly (Tyler) Brion of Athens, PA, Kacey Kane of Orchard Park, and Daniel Kane of Wellsville; five grandchildren, Molly Billings, Carsyn Kane, Carmyn Kane, Finnigan Brion, and Penny Bassage; her mother, Marilyn Bryan of Andover; three siblings, Kevin Bryan of Andover, William (Darla) Bryan of North Tonawanda, and Patrick (Lisa) Bryan of Hornell. She was predeceased by her father, and a sister, Barbara Day.

Charles George Wilson, 85

Wellsville, NY – Charles George Wilson, 85, of Riverside Drive, passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born in Buffalo, NY on May 7, 1937 the son of the late Frank D. and Ruth M. (Fox) Wilson. 

Chuck was raised in West Seneca and attended West Seneca High School. He enlisted with the United States Navy and actively served from 1956 – 1959. After his honorable discharge he was employed but the Erie County Parks and Recreation Department as a maintenance worker for Chestnut Ridge Park. While working for the park he was able to embrace his love for the snow and toboggan often with friends and siblings. He is survived by six children, several grandchildren, a brother, and two sisters. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother.
