Frank Earl Cady


FRANK CADY - LEGENDARY EDUCATOR, LEADER, COACH, AND LIFE-LONG MENTOR PASSES 


WELLSVILLE, NY – Frank Earl Cady, 82 of 93 Jefferson Street, passed away Monday morning (Feb13, 2017) at the Hart Comfort House in Wellsville.


He was born on April 30, 1934 in Wellsville the son of the late Earl Forest and Pearl (Babcock) Cady of Allentown.  On June 21, 1958 he married Joan Marie McGuirl at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Scio, NY.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his older sister, Sweetie Cady, in 1939. 
Frank was raised in Allentown, NY. He was a graduate of Allentown Union Free School and St. Bonaventure University, having earned both his Bachelor and Masters Degrees there. Following a two-year tour in the US Army, he began a nearly four-decade long career in education.  He was a History, Latin, and English teacher from 1957-1984, serving two years at Friendship Central School, three years at Scio Central School and the remaining years at Wellsville Central School. He then became assistant principal of Wellsville High School and principal in 1986, retiring in June 1991.

Frank was a life-long accomplished athlete and coach in multiple sports, having ultimately been inducted into both the Allegany County Athletic Association and Wellsville Sports Halls of Fame. 

His athletic accomplishments started in high school where he earned varsity letters in five sports and was high scorer on the undefeated Allentown “Whiz Kids” basketball team, scoring 48 points against then Roger Rigby’s Scio Tigers. He vigorously competed in baseball, softball, and tennis throughout his adult life capturing countless team and individual awards along the way including, but not limited to: a Fort Dix Tennis Doubles championship; a St. Bonaventure Tennis Doubles championship; a St. Bonaventure Alumni singles championship; a St. Bonaventure Mixed Doubles championship; a Times Herald Men’s 45 Singles championship; and, both the USTF’s Florida State “60-plus” and “70-plus” doubles championships from his winter home at The Landings in Fort Myers, Florida.

Frank’s most noteworthy coaching accomplishments while Coach of the WHS Girls’ Varsity Softball team included: seven Section V championships in nine years; a NYS record of 58 consecutive wins - including the 1994 Azalea Championship; and, 7 Expressway Conference titles – including a streak of 41 consecutive wins. Several of his lady Fast Pitch athletes went on to the collegiate level including: 5 at Division I; 2 at Division II; and, 3 who earned Collegiate All-American status. 

Frank inspired community enthusiasm for WHS sports while coaching tennis, basketball and softball at all levels throughout his career.  In addition, he became a famous radio personality, conducting weekly broadcasts of local games at various levels of competition. The capstone of his sports career came when the Big 30 “Coach of the Year Award” was permanently named after Coach Cady.

Frank Cady was one of Allegany County’s most legendary citizens having served so unselfishly throughout his life as a teacher, coach, administrator, mentor and devout loyal friend to students, peers, friends, and above all, family. He loved playing cards, traveling, holiday celebrations with family and his daily “coffee clutch” at Dunkin Donuts.

His loving family includes not only his wife Joan, of 58 years, but also three children, Michael Earl (Carol) Cady, grandson’s Luke and Eli; Sheila Anne (Anthony, Jr.) Delmonte, granddaughter Abbigail, and grandson Dominick; Julie Anne (Dr. Douglas) Cady-Reh, granddaughters Isabel and Laney, and grandson Sam; and 12 nephews and 11 nieces. He loved his family with a vigor unlike any other.

On Sunday, March 5, 2017 beginning at 1:00 pm friends and family are invited to gather at the Wellsville High School Auditorium. A "Celebration of Life Service" will begin at 2:15 pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, NY. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Belmont.

  1. As I entered high school, he was one of my first teachers. I wore this stupid Star Wars tee shirt (big at the time) and he complimented me on it. He was larger than life, funny, caring and a wonderful teacher. As part of an assignment, we had to do a video presentation. I portrayed Barry Lillis (a former Ch. 2 weather guy). I had a chalk board and props. He laughed so hard, he cryed. He gave me direction.
