John Paul Coleman Sr.

Belmont, NY – John Paul Coleman Sr., 76 Paul Coleman Sr., 76, of NY-19S, passed away unexpected on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at his home. He was born in Bloomsburg, PA on May 9, 1946 the son of the late Paul Larue and Lillian Emma (Evans) Coleman. On June 2, 2001 in Scio, he married his loving wife Patricia Peterson, who survives. 

John was raised in Bloomsburg and attended Center School. Throughout his life he lived in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, and New York. He farmed Christmas Trees, but his career was in Garbage Collection, where he was also self-employed, working in both Allegany County and Bloomsburg. Outside of his employment, he enjoyed raising fancy pigeons. 

In addition to his wife, Patti, he is survived by: 12 children, John P. (Joan) Coleman Jr., Brenda Moore, Janet (Kerry) Klemick, James (Valerie) Coleman, Doreen Halczak, Charles (Amy) Coleman, Rebecca Coleman, Pearl (Brian Vandenbosch) Dowell, Penny (Brett) Norris, Paul (Katie) Dowell Jr., Phillip (Tara) Dowell, and Patrick (Jenny) Dowell; many grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Kelly Wade Monroe, 62

Wellsville, NY – Kelly Wade Monroe, 62, of Maple Avenue, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born in Wellsville on November 29, 1960 the son of the late John “Skip” and Sandra (Graves) Monroe. On July 30, 1988 in Trinity Lutheran church he married Mary Mallory, who survives. 

Kelly was raised in Wellsville, and was a 1979 graduate of Wellsville High School. He enlisted with the United States Air Force and served from 1980 – 1982. Upon his honorable discharge he worked as a carpenter in Virginia, and then a CNA in Jamestown for Lutheran Social Services. Later, he was employed as a Limousine Driver. After a stint in maintenance at Friendship Diary, he continued his professional driving by acquiring his CDL and driving for ACES and later Resource Transportation in Towanda, PA. Outside of his employment, he enjoyed having a good time with his friends, wood working (especially bird feeders and benches), often selling or giving away what he would make, like Adirondack Chairs. He spent much of his time in his shop, either working on wood or his cars; he liked fast cars, including his Porsche. He also enjoyed cooking, particularly Prime Rib around Christmas time. He had a soft spot for animals, and was especially close to Scooter. 

In addition to his wife of 34 years, Mary, he is survived by: two sons, Terrence (Stacy) Monroe of Andover, and Matthew (Jamie) Monroe of Wellsville; three grandchildren, Aubree, Makaila, and Ryan Monroe; two sisters, Cheryl (Roger) Carlin of Tennessee, and Mindy (Dan) Peters of Wellsville; siblings-in-law, Glenn and Roger Mallory, and Peggy Stallworth; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Norma E. Dennis, 85

Wellsville, NY – Norma E. Dennis, 85, of Gardner Heights, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at Highland Park Care Center in Wellsville. She was born in Wellsville on October 24, 1937, the daughter of the late Harold and Rose (Brownell) Hunt. On March 17th, 1953 she married Robert E. Morse Sr., with whom she had her seven children. 

She was an avid bingo player, enjoyed playing cards, going to casinos, watching the Buffalo Bills play, and spending time with family and friends. She was a life member of the VFW Post 2530 Auxiliary, and member of the Morrison Hayes American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 702.

She is survived by: her children, Robert E. (Gloria Dash) Morse Jr. of Wellsville, Brenda (Dave) Hogan of Wellsville, Yvonne (Mike) Meyers of Scio, Connie (Jim) Stebbins of Wellsville, Diane Schwager of Wellsville, Sue (Dan) Perry of Scio, and David (Denice) Morse of Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly Clark of Andover, and Sandra E. Jackson of Wellsville; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, and husband, she was predeceased by: an infant brother, Harold Hunt Jr.; brother, Lester Hunt; and sister, Linda Hunt. 

The family would like to thank Highland Park for her care and her friends at Gardner Heights.

Gary Joseph Weinreber, 71

Wellsville, NY – Gary Joseph Weinreber, 71, of Lee Place passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at the Bath VA Care Center. He was born in Buffalo, NY on May 14, 1951 the son of the late Carl James and Mary Elizabeth (Armstrong) Weinreber. On March 12, 1988 in MargeAckerman’s home in Wellsville, he married his loving wife of 34 years, Sandra Lee Baldwin, who survives. 

Gary was born and raised in the Buffalo area and attended West Seneca West High School. Upon his 18th birthday, he was drafted by the US Army and proudly served with the 101stAirborne division in Vietnam. After his honorable discharge, he worked for W.W. Sheet Metal & Construction with his brother Mark. Gary found his career with the Railroad, employed by Morrison-Knudsen Corporation starting in 1991, and lived all across the United States during his employment – especially in San Francisco. He retired in 2001. Beyond his career, he loved fishing, boating, camping, and the great outdoors in general. He was a very private and quiet man, but was a very loving, caring, and devoted husband, Sandra’s best friend ever. His favorite saying to his “Buddy” was “Side by each together through thick and thin”. 

In addition to his wife, Sandra, he is survived by: siblings, Gail (Tom) Reese, Nancy (Tom) Haentges, Kim (Jamie) Weinreber-Johnson, Sue (John) Mitrision, and Craig (Debbie) Weinreber; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by: a brother, Mark Weinreber; and nephew, Shane Weinreber. 

At this time, services are being planned for late Spring/early Summer of this year. A committal with full military honors will take place at that time. William Lawrence Hoyer Sr., 77

Wellsville, NY – William Lawrence Hoyer Sr., 77, of 3684 County Road 28 passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at the home of his son in Friendship following a brief illness. He was born November 19, 1945 in Wellsville, the son of the late Walter and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Hurley) Hoyer. 

Bill was a graduate of Wellsville High School, and was a veteran of the U. S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was formerly employed at Friendship Dairies, Wise Snack Foods, and Schliegel Corporation. He was a member of the Friendship American Legion Post 1168, and the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW in Wellsville. 

He is survived by a son, William L. (Heather) Hoyer Jr. of Friendship, a step-granddaughter, Kira Farnum, and her fiance`Josh Sparks of Rochester, a grandson, Cohl Hoyer of Friendship, agreat granddaughter, McKenna Baker of Friendship, two brothers, Richard (Marlene) Hoyer, of Syracuse, and Kurt (Mary Ann) Hoyer of Oneonta, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by a daughter, Maggie May Hoyer, and a brother, John Hoyer.

Christopher M. Morrison, 53

Virginia Beach, VA – Christopher M. Morrison, 53, died on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Virginia Beach. He was born May 4, 1969 in Waverly, NY. He was raised in Wellsville and Virginia Beach, VA. He owned and operated “Rupture Streetwear” and enjoyed music, drag racing, and working on cars.

He is survived by his mother and step father, Joan and Vyle Bundy of Andover, a son, Brandon Morrison of Virginia Beach, two sisters, Cynthia Morrison of Wellsville & Susan (Patrick) DiBartolomeo of Fort Myers’s, FL, a brother, Joseph (Margo) Savage-Morrison of Virginia Beach, VA,  three nephews, Stone Skeeter, Mario DiBartolomeo, and Hudson Savage-Morrison, two nieces,  Kaley (Patrick) Hutchinson & Felicity Morrison, as well as several cousins. He was predeceased by his father, James Morrison, his paternal grandparents, Henry and Daphne Morrison, his maternal grandparents, Arthur and Anna Hoehne, a brother, Scott Bundy, as well as several aunts and uncles.

Harold Thomas Hoffman, 82

Wellsville, NY – Harold Thomas Hoffman, 82, of 103 Early Street passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023 at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was born January 11, 1941 in Hornell, the son of the late Harold G. and Mary Elizabeth (Swackhamer) Hoffman. On January 23, 1965 in Hornell he married Mary Ann Buono who survives.

Tom was raised in Hornell, and was a 1960 graduate of Hornell High School. He served with the U. S. Army Military Police in Germany from 1961 to 1964, and attended Officers Training School. He was first employed by the Erie Railroad in Hornell, working in the Ice House. He later joined the Hornell Police Department, and the New York State Police before beginning his career with the Wellsville Police Department in 1967, and retired with the rank of sergeant in 1996. He was a life member of the Emerald Hook & Ladder Company #3 and the Morrison Hayes Post 702, American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, and was an avid gardener.

Surviving in addition to his wife Mary Ann, are two daughters, Bridget (Kevin) Lafler of Middlesex, and Lisa (Chris) McNinch of Rushville, a special niece, Rita (Gary) George of West Almond, four grandchildren, Cody (Anna) Lafler, Patrick (Katie) Lafler, Justin McNinch, and Katie (Corey) Ledgerwood, four great grandchildren, Lainey, Bennett, Jack, and Tristan, a sister, Mary Ann Sullivan of Michigan, two brothers, Stephen (Joanne) Hoffman of Florida, and William Hoffman of Hornell, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by three sisters, Margaret Thurston, Carol Thompson, and JoAnn Hoffman, and a brother John Hoffman.

Frank M. Blue, 84

Wellsville, NY – Frank M. Blue, 84, of 90 Howard Street, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at home, with his family by his side. He was born April 29, 1938 in Wellsville the son of the late William Sr. and Nora (DeLong) Blue. On March 17, 2003 in their home in Friendship, he married his wife Mildred “Millie” Speta, who survives.

Frank attended the Allentown Union School, and was a 1957 honorary graduate. He earned his GED in June of 1986. He was employed by Jay Lumber Company, a division of Yansick Lumber Company, for 17 years before he transferred to the Slawson Lumber Company, for whom he worked for 9 years before retiring in 2000. Outside of work he enjoyed horse pulls, going to fairs, traveling with his wife, “clowning around”, going to yard sales, flea markets, and dabbled in drawing, painting, and wood working. Most of all he loved spending as much time as possible with his family, especially his grandchildren. 

In addition to his wife, Millie, he is survived by: two sons, Mike (Michelle) Blue, and Blair Blue, a daughter, Chris (Joe) Meyers, a stepson, Peter (Wendi) Kish, six grandchildren, Nick, Megan, Kylee, Devin, Brittney, and Amber; two brothers, Dutch Blue, and Richard Blue, a sister, Bernice Blue, as well as several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews,  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by: a son, Frankie Blue Jr.; two brothers, Cecil John Blue, and William Blue; and four sisters, Lula Clark, Hazel Lewis, Alta Dean, and Elizabeth Laici.

Timothy M. “Turtle” Quaintance, age 70

Scio, NY – Timothy M. “Turtle” Quaintance, age 70 of Scio sadly left us on January 7, 2023 at his home following an illness. He was born in Buffalo to the late Ivan and Ruth Gleason Quaintance.

Tim was a lifelong resident of Allegany County who had graduated from Belmont Central High School in 1970 and was a lifelong union mason and oil producer. He Joined the Coven Motorcycle Club in the early 1970’s and remained a beloved member of the Coven/ Rare Breed Motorcycle Clubs through the remainder of his life. Riding and supporting the club was Tim’s life and what he enjoyed doing the most. He served the Club as an officer and His preferred mode of transportation was a Harley Davidson.

Survivors include: A son Shawn Quaintance; 3 sisters, Donna [Dave]Briggs, Ruth Collmer and Diane Harms; a brother, Ivan A. Quaintance; 2 grandchildren, Braydan and Jordyn; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Ivan and Ruth, a brother in law, Jim Collmer and a sister in law Diane Quaintance.

In honor of Tim’s wishes visitation will be held on Wednesday January 11, 2023 from 4 until 8 pm at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, 34 West state Street Wellsville, New York. Shawn Michael Chase, 43

Bolivar, NY – Shawn Michael Chase, 43, previously of Belmont, died at home unexpectedly of a heart attack due to complications of diabetes on Monday, January 2, 2023. He was born in Cuba on June 7, 1979 the son of David L. and Diana M. (Kazanjian) Chase. 

Shawn attended Genesee Valley School and the Belmont BOCES. He worked for his mother’s Daycare services in Belmont, and loved being around the children. He was a volunteer firefighter until his health wouldn’t allow him to continue. Most of all, his passion was music, if he had to be indoors he needed it to be focused on music (or fighting with the cats). He worked as a DJ, was a member of several bands including Those Guys, Overgrown, and Erudition. He owned and operated his own recording studio helping several other local musicians record and produce their music. With Those Guys he toured across the United States, playing in several music festivals. He started with the local Pork Stock Festivals, and his love grew from there. When he didn’t have to be inside, he only ever wanted to be outdoors (where he preferred to be), he loved camping (having camped across the country), hunting, fishing, and was a generally well rounded outdoorsman. 

He is survived by: two daughters, Dahlia and Nikki Chase; his parents, Diana (Donald) Watkins, and David (Chris) Chase; siblings, Gage Watkins, Aaron (Laurie) Watkins, Vanessa (Noah) Thompson, David Chase Jr., Matt Chase, and Catrina Maynard; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and great nephews.

Robert James Howe, 69

Wellsville, NY – Robert James Howe, 69,  a former resident of 70 Johnson Street passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital following a long illness. He was born April 17, 1953 in Wellsville, the son of the late Robert L. and June (Crisjohn) Howe.

Bob was a 1971 graduate of Wellsville High School, and a 1975 graduate of Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. He was formerly employed in the oil production business in New York and Oklahoma, and the construction industry, while living in Connecticut. He was currently residing at Cobb’s Hill Manor in Rochester, and will be missed by many friends in many places. He was a member of the Allentown United Methodist Church, and was a volunteer for several nonprofit organizations in the Wellsville area.

He is survived by three daughters, Sarah (Stefan) Porco of Fairfield, CT, Lydia (Walter) Westhelle of Trumbull, CT, and formerlyEmily (Ryan) Dickison of Jacksonville, FL, two sisters, Susan (Robert) Stern of Wellsville, and Marsha (David) Lineman of Painted Post, seven grandchildren, a nephew, Ben (Erin) Lineman and a niece, Becky (Alex) Banks. He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by uncles and aunts, Warren and Dorothy Crisjohn, and Jean and Ken Olskey, and a cousin, Linda Freitas.
