Eugene Leo Johannes

Almond, NY - Eugene Leo Johannes, DVM, 80, of 7772 Bishopville Road passed away at home on Saturday, August 4, 2018. He was born on December 9, 1937 in Wellsville, the son of the late Leo and Doris (Robinson) Johannes. On May 19,1961 in Whitney Point he married Gail E. Jones who predeceased him on June 2, 2002, following a four year battle with cancer.

Dr. Johannes was raised in Belmont and was very active in the 4-H with Jersey cattle. He was a graduate and the valedictorian of his Belmont High School class. He enrolled into the in the Per-Veterinarian Program at the New York State Agricultural Collage at Cornell. He then was accepted in the New York State Veterinary College at Cornell, and graduated in 1961. He was selected for membership in Alpha Zeta, (an honorary agriculture fraternity) and Alpha Psi. (a veterinarian fraternity)

Upon graduation he spent one year in practice with Dr. Thorington, in Rushford. He entered the U.S. Army in August of 1962 for a two year tour, attaining the rank of Captain. In August of 1964 he came to Almond and opened a veterinarian practice; which he operated until May of 2008. In addition to his practice, Dr. Johannes owned and operated two dairy farms in the Almond area. The home farm had Jersey cattle, which were shown at the local, state and national levels. Over the years, over 30 “Excellent” cows were bred and developed. (the highest receiving a score of 94) At one time the herd had an average score of 87.5 points. (90 being excellent) He was a member of the AUMA, WNYMA, NYSUMS, AABA, and the AARP. Over the years he and Gail enjoyed traveling in their motor home.

He is survived by two sons, Mark Johannes of Almond, and Ralph (Sara) Johannes of Belmont, three grandsons, Tyler, Zach, and Warren Johannes, and one granddaughter, Rochelle Johannes

  1. My longtime Vet, friend, and neighbor. You Gene will be sadly missed by many. Gail and I always enjoyed our visits and banter. You've known our children from birth, and of course, saw to the well being of our 4 legged kids as well. So happy to have known you, equally sad to know your gone. Peace my longtime friend.
