Wellsville, NY - Norman J. Olmstead left the loving care of his family in the Porter Hospital, Middlebury, Vermont on Monday, March 26, 2012. He was born on March 2, 1916 in Wellsville, Allegany County, New York to Raymond E. Olmstead and Lena Belle Adams Olmstead. He married Edith M. Francisco in Belmont, New York on April 10, 1942.
He is a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1942-46.
He owned and operated funeral homes in Belmont and Mexico, New York, retiring in 1981. He and his wife, Edith, have resided in Middlebury since 1981.
They have been members of the Congregational Church, Middlebury; he served as Master of Belmont Lodge #474, Free and Accepted Masons, Belmont; member of the Mexico Chapter #136, Royal Arch Masons, Mexico; past President of Onondaga-Oswego Funeral Directors Association of New York; past Commander of Stone-Davis, American Legion Post #384.
He is survived by his wife of almost seventy years, Edith; his daughter Amy Jo Emerson and her husband John D. Emerson of Middlebury, Vermont; his son Neil R. Olmstead and his wife Debra Barnickol Olmstead of Nevada City, California; four grandchildren: Jay and Pete Emerson and Dan and Laura Olmstead; three great-grandchildren: Lena Fay, Laura Rae, and Bella Jo Emerson.
