Ida Frans

Belmont - Ida Frans of 28 Willets Ave passed away at home on June 9, 2009. She was born on August 1, 1940 in New York, New York. Ida has been a resident of Belmont since 1989 and loved music.

She is survived by her many caregivers and friends.

Friends are invited to call from 10 am to 11 am in the St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Belmont at which time a funeral service will take place. Rev. Lawrence Mothersell will preside and burial will take place in Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont.

Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Belmont.

Lena V. McGee

Wellsville - Lena V. McGee, 101, of 160 Seneca Street died peacefully on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 with her family at her side at the Highland Healthcare Center in Wellsville. She was born March 27, 1908 in Silver Creek, NY the daughter of Samuel and Julia (Stevens) Vara. On May 27, 1933 in Sheridan, NY she married Joseph E. McGee who predeceased her on June 26, 1960.

Lena was a buyer and sales associate for Ludemann’s Department Store in Silver Creek until her retirement in 1972. She then moved to Wellsville and was an active member of the Wellsville Senior Citizens, St. John’s Episcopal Church and St. Anne’s Guild.

She is survived by two daughters, Julia (Eugene) Mohart of Silver Creek and Arline “Penny” (Kenneth) Canfield of Wellsville, two sisters, Katherine Pizzolanti of Derby and Janet (Horace) Saletta of Fredonia, three grandchildren, Sheila (Rob) Steinorth of Hilton, Karen (David) Maskens of Fairport and David Paul Canfield of Buffalo, two great grandsons, Brandon (Christina) Steinorth and Jack Maskens, one great-great grandson, Noah and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her husband by three brothers, Joseph, Horace and Charles Vara.

Friends are invited to a graveside service on Saturday June 6, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Sheridan Cemetery, Center Road in Sheridan, NY with Rev. Gerald Cooper presiding. Edward John Peter Corcoran Jr.

Wellsville - Edward John Peter Corcoran Jr. of North Franklin Street passed away on Sunday May 31, 2009 at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 19, 1953 in Wellsville to Edward J. and Roberta Bartlett Corcoran. On August 28, 2004 in Belmont he married Kellee Osgood who survives.

Ed graduated from Wellsville High School and was a veteran of the US Navy serving on the USS Mississinewa. He enjoyed working with his hands and was a machinist for RMT in Wellsville for 10 years. Prior to RMT he had worked for the former Butler Larkin in Wellsville and also in construction. He was a long time member of the Coven Motorcycle Club and the NRA. He will be remembered as a loyal friend, an understanding father and a loving husband.

Surviving besides his wife; his mother Roberta Corcoran of Wellsville; a daughter Missy ”Lorie” (Andrew) Allbright of Warsaw; two grandchildren, Isis and Ashor; a brother, James Corcoran of Wellsville; two sisters, Roberta (Joe) Andrasic of Fredonia and Kathleen Corcoran of Everett, Washington; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father and a sister Teresa Corcoran.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday June 4 from 2-4 pm in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A funeral service with military honors will follow the calling hours at 4 pm in the funeral home with Deacon Frank Pasquale presiding. Memorials in Ed’s name may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Bertha Mae Brown

Wellsville - Bertha Mae Brown of the Bolivar Road passed away on Tuesday May 26, 2009 at the Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born on May 1, 1923 in Greenwood to Ariel and Bertha Edwards Doty. On December 6, 1941 she married Donald A. Brown who predeceased her on March 8, 2004.

Bertha Mae “Bud” and Don raised their children in Petrolia and then for a time lived in Glencoe Ontario Canada and then returned to the Wellsville Petrolia area in 1967. Bertha was a member of the Allentown United Methodist Church and was active at the Wellsville Senior Center. She loved to sing and would join in song whenever the occasion would arise. Bertha was always a farm girl at heart and her love of animals was always a part of her life. She loved to sew and bake. She will be fondly remembered for her chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and the candy she made and always brought to her grandchildren on visits.

Survivors include: a son Kenneth (Shirley) Brown of Victor; two daughters, Sherry Haggith of Glencoe Ontario Canada and JoAnn Brown of London Ontario Canada; eleven grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren; a brother Homer (Karol) Doty of Belmont and a sister Shirley Connioto of Wellsville as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Carol Francis and Herman Doty; three sisters, Ruth Deats, Lena Fuller and Leah Nesbit.

Friends are invited to call on Friday May 29 from 11 am to 1 pm in the J.W.Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville at which time a funeral service will take place. Pastor Dick Helms will preside and burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials in Bertha’s name may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Dolores G. Whitney

Belmont, NY - Dolores G. Whitney, 74, of 5692 Tuckers Corners Road passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2009 at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell with her family at her side. She was born May 16, 1935 in Hornell the daughter of Edward and Isabelle (Philips) Goth. On September 15, 1956 in Hornell she married Victor L. Whitney who survives.

Dolores was raised in Hornell, was a 1953 graduate of Hornell High School and a 1956 graduate of St. James Mercy Hospital; School of Nursing. She was formerly employed as a registered nurse at St. James Mercy Hospital and Leominster Hospital in Massachusetts. She was the head of maternity at Cuba Memorial Hospital, was a School nurse for Friendship Central School and was a nurse for the Allegany County Department of Social Services. She later taught nursing at BOCES in Belmont and retired in 1991. She spent her winters in Florida; where she taught computers and sewing in Avon Park. She loved her students and enjoyed sewing, quilting and her computer.

Surviving in addition to her husband is a son, Michael L. Whitney of Angelica, a brother, Michael (Maryanne) Goth of Silver Creek, a sister-in-law, Beverly Harding of Angelica, two brother-in-laws, Larry (Ruth) Whitney of Wellsville and Rick (Lois) Whitney of Bolivar a special friend, Roseanna Tait of Belmont, several nieces & nephews and her beloved dog Reese. She was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Thomas Harding and a sister-in-law, Janet L. Whitney.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. 17 Schuyler Street, in Belmont. On Wednesday (May 27th) at 11:00 am there will be a Eucheristic Service at Holy Family Church in Belmont with Deacon Frank Pasquale presiding. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont. Memorial suggestions include the Belmont Free Library or the American Cancer Society.

Dorothy B. Johnson

Wellsville - Dorothy B. Johnson of the Bolivar Road passed away on Friday May 15, 2009 in the Wellsville Manor Nursing Home. She was born at home in Plainfield, New Jersey on January 20, 1921 to Elmer and Beatrice Bodine Borman. On July 27, 1946 in Plainfield she married Sherwood Wesley Johnson who predeceased her on April 21, 1979.

Dorothy was a long time resident of the Plainfield New Jersey area that moved to Wellsville in 2006. She worked for Bell Telephone for many years and very proud that she worked there during WWII. Dorothy enjoyed reading, knitting, gardening and swimming at the New Jersey Shore. She was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Plainfield New Jersey.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mary [Robin] Rhodes of Wellsville; a son Wesley [Rosemary] Johnson of Crestview, FL.; five granddaughters; four great grandchildren and two nephews.

Dorothy was predeceased by a daughter Linda Smith and a sister Marian Anderson.

There will no services and her burial will take place in Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge, NJ. Any memorials in Dorothy’s name may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Carl W. Link

Wellsville, NY - Carl W. Link, 99, of 4381 Niles Hill Road died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 12, 2009. He was born on February 3, 1910 in the Town of Allen the son of Albert and Minnie (Miller) Link.

Carl was a former longtime resident of the Old State Road in Angelica. He was employed from 1933 to 1937 as a teamster, cultivating vegetable crops for the Central Islip State Hospital on Long Island. He then returned to the family farm in Angelica, and began his career as a dairy farmer, until his retirement in the mid 1990’s. He was a member of the Dairylea Cooperative and with his brothers produced maple syrup for many years. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Basswood Hill and was a faithful servant of his church and his Lord.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Helen Link of Wellsville and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Henry, Walter and Harold Link and four sisters, Henrietta Link, Amelia Vossler, Katherine Dornow and Anna Vossler.

Friends are invited to call on Saturday, (May 16, 2009) from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Basswood Hill Road (County Road 15) in the Town of Allen. The funeral will follow visitation at 12 noon in the church with Rev. Larry Hoyt presiding. Burial will follow in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery on Basswood Hill.
