Robert C. Sweet


Wellsville, NY - Robert C. Sweet, 91, of 4329 Bolivar road passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center with his family at his side. He was born May 31, 1919 in Wellsville the son of the late Milford C. and Lydia (Fleischman) Sweet. On November 10, 1942 in Fayetteville, NC he married Gladys Dickinson who survives.

Bob was attended Wellsville Central School and continued his education with the Veterans Administration school after returning from WWII. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and served with the 101st Airborne. He was part of the invasion force at Normandy and served in Europe where he was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts. He also received the French Jubilee of Liberty Metal and had just received the French Legion of Honor Metal. He was part of the liberating force in Holland and made many friends while there; he returned to Holland twice since the war to visit those friends.

Bob was the co-owner, operator and president of Rockwell Brother's Department Store in Downtown Wellsville for many years and retired in 1990. He was a longtime active member of the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce, the Wellsville Lions Club and was a life member of the Wellsville Rod & Gun Club. He was a 74 year member of the McEwen Hose Company # 4 in Wellsville and was named the Allegany County Fireman of the Year in 2008. He was also a member of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion, the Frank B. Church Post # 2530 VFW, the Brookland Club in Pennsylvania, the Custom Express Car Club and the First Trinity Lutheran Church. He was an avid coin collector, had wintered in Florida for many years and loved spending time with grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 68 years; are two children, David (Jackie) Sweet and Kathryn (Roger) Moyer both of Wellsville, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a sister, Lois (Ed) Flurschutz of Wellsville, a sister-in-law, Marcella Sweet of Wellsville, several nieces & nephews and two special and devoted family friends, Jim & Rae Franklin of Wellsville. He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Sweet in 1999.

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the First Trinity Lutheran Church, 470 N. Main Street in Wellsville. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm in church with Rev. Robert Morris presiding. Burial with military honors will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.     We are saddened to learn of Grampa Sweet's passing. It has been our privilege to have had him in our lives, along with Grama Sweet and the entire Sweet/Moyer family!

    Our deepest sympathy to each and every one of you!

    We are unable to attend the service tomorrow and deeply regret that, but our promise to you is that we will be coming to Wellsville soon.
