Wellsville, NY - Shirley E. Ross of Center Drive passed away on Friday, February 4, 2011, at the Highland Health Care Center. She was born on July 20, 1920 in Elmira to Clarence and Lucy Hibbard Enos. On May 4, 1946 in Branchport she married William E. Ross who predeceased her on March 16, 1992.
Shirley graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1938 and from Elmira Business Institute in 1940. During World War II Shirley worked for the Civil Defense in Elmira and prior to moving to Wellsville in 1952 for RKB of Elmira. From 1966 until her retirement in 1986 she was a secretary for Ebenezer Oil Company of Wellsville. Shirley was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Wellsville for many years and had been a member of the Monday Club and the After Five Club. The family extends a special thank you to the Highland Health Care Center for their dedication and concern for Shirley.
Survivors include: a son, Robert (Vicky) Ross of Big Flats; 2 grandsons, William Ross of Columbus, OH., and Stephen Ross of Bagram AFB, Afghanistan; a sister, Margaret E. Pelton of Bridgeton, ME.
Shirley was predeceased by a daughter Janet Ross Tapogna on August 30, 2010.
Friends are invited to call on Monday, February 7, 2011, from 7-9 pm in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A private family service will be held on Tuesday with Rev. Cole Gruberth with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial wishes include the David A. Howe Library in Wellsville.
