Deborah J. "Debbie" Howitt Ellis


Olean, NY - Deborah J. "Debbie" Howitt Ellis, 58, of 219 South Union Street died on Friday, February 26, 2010 at Olean General Hospital with her family at her side. She was born November 26, 1951 in Meadville, PA the daughter of Arthur P. and Ruth (Johnston) DeMotte. She was raised in Meadville, graduated from North Alleghany High School in 1969 and had attended Westminster College.

Debbie was a former resident of Wellsville and Salamanca before moving to Olean in 2004. She was formerly employed as a Tourism Specialist for Allegany County; as a writer for W.L.S.V Radio in Wellsville and was a representative for the Hanley Insurance Company in Wellsville. She was a former member of the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Hemlock Twig and the Wellsville Lions Football Boosters. She had volunteered for the Randy Kuhl campaign and was a member of the Women's Republican Club.

She is survived by two sons, Seth (Lynda) Howitt of Williamson and Nathan Howitt of Myrtle Beach, SC, four grandchildren, Kaylee and Abigail Howitt and Sarah and Allison Decker, her mother, Ruth DeMotte of Uniontown, PA, a brother, Paul (Pati) DeMotte Jr. of Del Rio, TX, three sisters, Beverly (Dwayne) Santella and Karen (Ira) Chrise both of Uniontown, PA and Linda (Tom) Pichard of Seattle, WA, as well as several aunts & uncles and nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her father in 2002.

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, March 3rd from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 8:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., 34 W. State Street in Wellsville, NY. A memorial service will follow visitation at 8:00 pm Wednesday in the funeral home with her brother, Rev. Paul DeMotte Jr. presiding. Memorial donations are suggested to National Lung Association.

Shirley A. Veley

Wellsville, NY - Shirley A. Veley, 78, of 160 Seneca Street died on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Wellsville Highland Healthcare Center. She was born August 14, 1931 in the Town of Howard, the daughter of Harold C. and Edith M. (Blakeslee) Gardner. On December 24, 1947 she married Leland J. "Pete" Veley who predeceased her in 1998.

Shirley and Pete operated the family farm in Belmont for many years. They were also former members of the Grange.

She is survived by seven children, Jane (Ralph) Speta of Cuba, Robert (Sharon) Veley of St. Mary's, PA, Gary I. Veley of Cuba, J. "Eddie" (Sandra) Veley of Belmont, Richard "Rick" (Betty) Veley of Zephyrhills, FL, Cheryl (Jerry) Weicht of Inverness, FL and Debbie (Paul) Zipeto of Spencerport and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Leland J. Veley Jr. in 2007 and a sister, Gloria Green.

Friends are invited to a memorial service on Friday, February 26, 2010 at 10:00 am in the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., 17 Schuyler Street in Belmont with Pastor Dick Helms presiding. There will be no prior visitation. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont. Vicki Lynn Hollister

West Clarksville, NY - Vicki Lynn Hollister, 51, of 2633 Higby Road died unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Olean General Hospital. She was born February 9, 1959 in Wellsville the daughter of the late David and Josephine (Pettinato) Hollister. She was a 1977 graduate of Belmont High School, had attended Alfred State College and was currently enrolled at Southern University of Georgia. She was a jack of all trades, most recently, a candle maker at Northern Lights Candles in Wellsville. She also had been employed as a home health aide, waitress and florist.

Vicki was a member of the Wellsville Full Gospel Church, the Herbert Delong American Legion Post 808 Auxiliary and the Western New York Emmaus Community. She was an avid bowler and was a former pitcher for the Wellsville Women's Softball League. She enjoyed hiking, camping, fishing, swimming and cake decorating. On several occasions, she donated to Locks of Love to help children in need and was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by four children, Christal Lynn Parks, Bridget Jo Burdick and Jeffrey Dane Hollister all of Cuba and Michelle Lee Cain of West Clarksville, six grandchildren, Caleb Anthony Logue, Tyson Christopher Logue, Danny Warren Logue, Aliyah Genevieve Logue, Savion Dane Schaffer and Lanson Arlo Skinner, five sisters, Margie (John) Dunford of Belmont, Donna Hollister of Costa Mesa, CA, Nancy Ruhl of Wellsville, Judy (Raymond) Hoberg of Belmont and Kathy (Daniel) Allen of West Clarksville, her former husband and close friend, Dean Robert Perry of Wellsville as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased a brother, David Hollister Jr. and a sister, Deborah Lee Hollister.

Richard R. "Dick" Buck

Wellsville, NY - Richard R. "Dick" Buck of East Dyke Street passed away on Sunday February 21, 2010 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born on November 10, 1936 in Buffalo to Robert W. and Rita L.(Cusson) Buck. On October 24, 1959 at St. Bibianna's Catholic Church in Galton, PA he married Carmela G. Pagano.

Dick and Carmela moved to California in 1959 where he started his career as a printer. Dick became well known in Wellsville as printer for the Wellsville Daily Reporter and as owner of R. Buck Printing, he later retired from the Hornell Evening Tribune. Dick enjoyed traveling and bowling and in his younger years enjoyed an active social life. His memberships include the Immaculate Conception Church, the Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge all of Wellsville.

Dick leaves behind six children; Gina N. Smith, Nicki L. (Charles) Booker, Camilla (Todd) Merrick, Jay R. (Lisa) Buck, Frank R. Buck and Guy J.(Theresa) Buck; six grandchildren, Cori, Colten, Levi, Jade, Brandon and Kevin; several nieces and nephews as well as many friends here and in Heaven.

Dick has gone to Heaven to join his wife Carmella, his parents Robert and Rita, his step father Ralph Keeney, his brother Robert Buck and his sister Jackie Fryling.

Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass to be celebrated on Friday, February 27, at11 am in the Immaculate Conception Church with Monsignor Vincent Becker presiding. Memorials in Dick's name may be made to either the Jones Memorial Hospital or to the Immaculate Conception Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Regina Elizabeth Simms

Wellsville, NY - Regina Elizabeth Simms of Fulmer Valley Road passed away on Thursday February 18, 2010 at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born on October 6, 1932 in Wellsville to Harley and Dora (Travis) Baldwin. Regina married Leland "Pete" Simms who predeceased her on April 1, 2004.

Regina graduated from Wellsville High School and worked in many local businesses. They included the Kaiser Glove Factory, Newberry's, Super Duper and she retired from Current Controls. Regina liked to read, crochet and enjoyed horses. She lived for her children and grandchildren and was a friend to all.

Survivors include: a daughter, Linda (Eric) Stark of Wellsville; a son William (Elaine) Simms of Wellsville; 3 grandsons Ryan Stark of Rochester, Talon Stark of Wellsville and Peter Simms of Wellsville; 2 sisters, Lois Lorshbaugh of Wellsville and Donna (Jim) Mulholland of Wellsville; several nieces and nephews

Besides her parents and her husband Regina was predeceased by a son, Gene L. Simms; 2 sisters, Reba Hurd and Anna Baldwin; 2 brothers, Robert Baldwin and Lewis Baldwin.

Kenneth J. Bernard

Olean, NY - Kenneth J. Bernard of Billington Avenue passed away at Olean General Hospital on Friday February 19, 2010. He was born on October 22, 1919 in Belfast to John C. and Ruth I. (McCarty) Bernard. On October 18, 1941 in Cuba he married Helen A. Cummins who predeceased him on February 14, 2007.

Ken graduated from Belfast Central School and was a former resident of Belfast, Zephyrhills, Florida and Wellsville. Ken was a farmer and a carpenter that later was The Highway Superintendent for the Town of Belfast and retired from the Allegany County Highway Department in road sign maintenance. He had been a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Belmont.

Survivors include: two sons, Ronald J. Bernard of Olean and Loren D. (Sue) Bernard of Ceres; 4 grandchildren, Mark (Kate) Bernard, Brian Bernard, Troy (Johanna) Bernard and Kimberly Bernard Sutton; 2 step grandchildren, Eric and Josh Hurd and 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call on Sunday February 21 from 5 to 7pm in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Belmont and on Monday from 11 am to 1pm. His funeral service will be held in the funeral home following calling hours at 1 pm with Deacon Frank Pasquale presiding. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery. Paula K. (Eck) Willis

Wellsville, NY - Paula K. (Eck) Willis of Howard Street passed away on Wednesday February 17 at Jones Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on June 26, 1946 in Bradford, PA. to Truman S. and Helen (Jones) Eck. On December 28, 1974 she married Donald M. Willis who predeceased her on June 4, 2002.

Paula graduated from Bradford Area High School. She was a school bus driver for Scio Central School and for over 20 years worked at Wellsville Central School as a monitor and retired as the mail clerk.

Survivors include: two daughters, Dawn (Austin Hunt) Willis of Wellsville and Pamela (Eric) Willis-Austin of Columbus, OH.; two sisters, Carla Weaver of Bradford and Joyce (Jack) Lucco of Limestone; a number of extended family, including step children and their families, nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends.

Paula was predeceased by her husband Donald and two brothers Gerald and Minor Eck.

Friends are invited to call on Saturday February 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A funeral service will take place on Sunday at 3 pm in the Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Gorham of the CMA Church. Sonya Ann Van Curen

Wellsville, NY - Sonya Ann Van Curen, 30, of 2088 County Road 18 died on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at Rochester General Hospital following a long battle with a heart and lung condition. She was born on December 19, 1979 in Wellsville the daughter of Raymond and Concetta (Del Vechio) Van Curen.

Sonya was raised in Wellsville and attended Wellsville High School. She had an outgoing spirit and courageous determination; as she would often care for her twin sister and mother while suffering from own serious illness.

She is survived by her mother, Concetta "Tina" Van Curen of Wellsville, her twin sister, Tonya Ann Van Curen and her fiancé Stanley Hunt of Wellsville, five brothers, Robert Van Curen of Wellsville, Steven Van Curen of Oklahoma, Lance Garfield of Winston-Salem, NC, Bruce (Danyelle) Garfield of Belmont, John (Tracy) Garfield of Lewisville, NC, her long time companion, Chris Eldridge of Wellsville, an aunt, Cathy (Don) Adams of Cuba, and several other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Donalda D. "Donnie" Ketchner

Scio, NY - Donalda D. “Donnie” Ketchner, 66, of 4422 River Street died on Friday, February 12, 2010 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. She was born December 14, 1943 in Olean the daughter of Lee and Geneva (Moore) Jordan. She was first married to Gordon Black who predeceased her in 1977. On June 24, 1989 in Scio she married William R. Ketchner who survives.

Donalda was raised in Bolivar, was a graduate of Bolivar High School, and was a former member of the Bolivar Fire Department, the Bolivar Fire Department Auxiliary and the Bolivar First United Methodist Church. She was formerly employed at the Castle Inn in Olean and the Wellsville Manor Care Center.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Sue (Walt) Brown of Mooresville, NC and Merri (Tracy) Griffiths of Wellsville, a stepson, Timothy (Kim) Ketchner of Sebring, FL, eight grandchildren, Molly Brown and fiancé, Ken Sullivan, Greg Brown, Clarissa Young, Kyle Young, Nathan Griffiths, Garrett Griffiths, Jennifer (Mark) Meinke and Ryan (Tana) Ketchner, three great grandchildren, Tyler, Madison and Beu, and a brother, Michael Jordan of Pennsylvania.

Frances L. Spinelli

Wellsville, NY - Frances L. Spinelli, 94, formerly of 247 N. Main Street died on Monday, February 8, 2010 at the Highland Healthcare Center in Wellsville. She was born April 17, 1915 in Forest City, PA the daughter of Gerold and Frances (Krancz) Laurich.

Fran is survived by two sons, Joseph (Lois) Spinelli of Wellsville and Dr. Charles (Sue) Spinelli of Manhattan, MT, four grandchildren, Michael (Lisa) Spinelli of St. Maries, ID, James (Melissa) Spinelli of Wellsville, Theresa (Richard) Vaughn of Lewistown, MT and Maria Spinelli of Singapore, as well as four great grandchildren, Justin and Jessica Spinelli of Wellsville and Megan and Jenna Vaughn of Lewistown, MT and one brother, Joseph Laurich of Avon Park, FL. Fran was an avid golfer at both the Wellsville Country Club and River Greens Golf Course in Avon Park, FL.

Burial arrangements are under the care of the Stephenson-Nelson-Smith Funeral Home in Avon Park. Interment will be in Bougainvillea Cemetery in Avon Park at the convenience of the family, where she will be placed to rest beside her husband, Charles, who predeceased her in 2000. Carolyn Murray Feldbauer

Belmont, NY - Carolyn Murray Feldbauer, of Belmont, died on February 8, 2010. She was born Carolyn Mae Murray on March 27, 1939 to James D. Murray and Rhea E. Hilligas Murray. She grew up in Friendship and graduated high school in 1957. Carolyn earned her BA in Music Education at SUNY Fredonia, graduating in 1961. Her Graduate Studies took place at Ithaca College and Alfred University. "Miss Murray," as she is remembered by many of her former students, taught music in Arcade, Pittsford and Angelica before retiring, at which point, she gave private piano lessons for many years, She married James F. Feldbauer on July 25, 1970.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 39 years, James, her mother, Rhea of Belmont, her children, Kathryn "Kate" Handy of Ithaca, James (Nikki) of Jefferson, Michael of Belmont, Mark (Lorie) of Lancaster, Martin "Tiger" of Belmont and Mary Jo McNinch (James Jr.) of Belmont. She is survived, as well, by her grandchildren, Brandon, Casey, Kimberly, Loran, Matthew, Olivia and Grace and one great grandchild, Kache; sister in law, Frances Hurd of Pleasanton, TX, brother in law and sister in law, Bob and Doris Feldbauer of Angelica and Harry "Skip" Feldbauer of Belfast and several nieces and nephews.

We, who loved Carolyn and miss her already, take comfort in the happy life she lived and the peaceful, loving way god took her home. "To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under Heaven." [Ecclesiastes 3:1]. It is, now, our time to mourn but also to rejoice in the life of a woman, well lived and well loved.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday February 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Belmont. A Prayer Service will be offered at 10:30 am in the Funeral Home on Friday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 am in the Holy Family Catholic Church on Milton Street in Belmont. Robert Arthur Lehman


Wellsville, NY - Robert Arthur Lehman, a resident of Wellsville Manor for the last several years, went to be with his Savior, Sunday February 7th, 2010 following a protracted illness. Mr. Lehman was born January 3rd, 1919 in Wellsville, New York to William Lehman and Hazel Halstead Lehman. At an early age, following the oil boom, he and his family moved West, to Maricopa, California where he lived until settling in Whittier, California in the early 1930s. Robert was a graduate of Whittier High School class of 1936. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger (CV-4) as a boatswains mate and felt honored as being the ship's sharpshooter. He cruised the Pacific to Hawaii and South America, sailed thru the Panama Canal and was involved in pre-war maneuvers in the Caribbean and Atlantic. The Ranger docked in Brooklyn, NY where Bob was chosen to be part of the Naval Honor Guard accompanying President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the opening ceremonies of the 1939 World's Fair. Mr. Lehman was among the sailors standing on the platform, behind the President of what was the first commercial television broadcast. Robert took part in shipping loads of "lend lease" fighter aircraft to England prior to the outbreak of World War II. He was honorably discharged March, 1940.

In 1940 Mr. Lehman returned to Wellsville where he resided until the time of his death. Bob was a machinist and turbine assembler at the Worthington Corporation (Dresser Rand) until his retirement in 1981 with over 40 years of service. He was a member of The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union for 65 years and served faithfully as treasurer of Local 1580 for several years.

On May 18, 1946, Mr. Lehman and Miss Doris M. Nydegger were joined in holy matrimony by Pastor Elmer W. Krentz at The First Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wellsville, NY. After many happy years, Doris died January 14, 1979. Mr. Lehman subsequently remarried. He wedded Ruth Reitz (nee Fleischmann) at Trinity Lutheran June 24th, 1981.

Mr. Lehman was an avid bowler, fisherman and gardener. He particularly enjoyed auto trips. The only state he didn't visit in his lifetime was Alaska. Bob and his first wife Doris, traveled a good deal of the United States taking automobile vacations. Bob and Ruth went on a pilgrimage to the mid-east in the 1980s where he got to ride a camel and see the Great Pyramids. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren Betsy and Zach participate in youth soccer and Little League baseball as well as being a loyal NY Yankees fan. He was an usher, member of the Board of Elders at First Trinity as well as being in the Men's Fellowship and Couples Club there. Bob along with both wives was active in card clubs and had many friends.

Mr. Lehman was predeceased by Doris, Ruth, a brother Julius, a sister Edith Brossia, both of California and his grandson Zachary T. Allen. He is survived by a devoted daughter, Kay (Thomas) Allen, his loving granddaughter Elizabeth (Jermaine) Allen-Matthew of Alaska. In addition he is survived by a brother, Albert (Dottie) Lehman of Texas, two sisters, Hazel (Larry) Shesgreen and Wilma (James) Coleman both of California, stepchildren Donna (Bruce) DeForest of Delaware, Karl (Sherry) Reitz of New Hampshire and Norman (Julie) Reitz of Rochester. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.W. Embser Sons. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 10, from one until two PM at First Trinitry Ev. Lutheran Church, 470 North Main Street, Wellsville. A memorial service will follow at 2PM. The family invites everyone to stay for light refreshments. Burial will follow in Woodlawn with Military Honors. Memorials may be made in Mr. Lehman's memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

Ella C. Pierce

Belmont, NY - Ella C. Pierce of Nobel Street passed away on Wednesday February 3, 2010 at the home of her daughter in Orlando, Florida. She was born on November 5, 1916 in Belmont to Frederick and Nora Cole Canfield. On October 31, 1936 in Angelica she married Lyle C. Pierce who predeceased her on August 5, 2006.

Ella graduated from Belmont Central High School. Along with her husband Lyle they owned and operated a Packard Dealership in both Belmont and Wellsville. Ella maintained her long time home on Nobel Street and was a life long member of the First Baptist Church in Belmont.

Ella is survived by: a son Karl F. Pierce to of Hornell; two daughters, Jeanne (Tage) Nielsen of Spencerport and Linda (Ronald) Bigelow of Orlando, FL.; A granddaughter, Dianne Mead; 4 grandsons, Richard Pierce, Kirk (Kathleen) Nielsen, Karl (Stephanie) Nielsen and Steven Bigelow; 6 great grandchildren, Alexander and Erik Nielsen, Katherine and David Nielsen, Jessica and Shane Mead.

She was predeceased by 5 brothers, Wallace, Willis, Westly, Walter and Wilton Canfield.

Rose M. Wood

Wellsville, NY - Rose M. Wood, 96, of 2836 Lindy Lane passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born Rose Marie Shall at home in Oswayo, PA on June 26, 1913. She was the daughter of Ralph and Congetta (Brenell) Shall, Italian immigrants from Naples, Italy. She was raised in the Oswayo and Shinglehouse area and graduated from Shinglehouse High School in 1932. She then attended West Brook Business Academy in Olean and graduated from there in 1933.

On June 18, 1938 she married Eugene U. Wood in Wellsburg, West Virginia. They moved to Bolivar in 1941 where they raised their family. During that time she was employed with Hall's Department Store, Elsie Bartlett Insurance Company and the First Trust Bank, retiring from there in 1973. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Bolivar and a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.

Rose is survived by two daughters, Concetta (Richard) Burrous of Sun City Center, FL and Nancy Quackenbush of Wellsville, her grandchildren, James Burrous of Ocean Springs, MS, Thomas Burrous of Haverhill, MA, Trina Papa of Boston, MA, Karen (Joseph) Cronin of Fairport, Joni (Jason) Neus of Geneseo, Jeni (Bryan) Barnes of Scottsville, her great grandchildren, Sarah Burrous, Alexandra Burrous, Nicolas Burrous, Katherine Cronin, Nicole Cronin, Alyssa Neus and Matthew Neus. She is also survived by a sister, Helen N. Shall of Cousderport, PA, a sister-in-law, Phyllis Shall of Oswayo, PA and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1987, her son-in-law, Terry Quackenbush in 1988 and her grand daughter-in-law, Rhonda Burrous in 2007.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., 34 W. State Street in Wellsville where the Rosary will be recited Thursday at 3:45 pm. Prayers will be offered on Friday, February 5th at 10:00 am in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 am in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville with Rev. Sean DiMaria as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bolivar. Memorials can be made to St. Mary's Church in Bolivar, the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville or the Bolivar Ambulance Squad.
