William "Bill" Crandall Greene Jr.

Belmont, NY - William Crandall Greene Jr., 87, of 20 Willets Avenue passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018 at the Highland Park Healthcare Center in Wellsville, following a long illness. He was born June 14, 1931 in Wellsville, the son of the late William and Elizabeth (Shourds) Greene Sr. 

Bill graduated from Belmont High School in 1949, Alfred State College in 1955, and Geneseo State College 1972. He was employed at Letchworth State Park, and for 13 years was the Allegany County Historian. For 20 years he wrote a weekly article for the Wellsville Daily Reporter, called “Genesee Reflections.” He co-wrote the Letchworth State Park Guidebook with his brother-in-law, William Hood, and later worked for Green Thumb. He loved to camp, and enjoyed genealogy, astronomy, painting, and making pottery. He also enjoyed making models of houses, local buildings, and boats. He was a member of the former United Church of Belmont, the Grange, and the County Historians Association. He was a former member and scout leader with the Boys Scouts of America,  he drove for Allegany County Medical Transport for 10 years. For many years, he portrayed Hamilton Ward at the Allegany County Fair, and he was a Ham Radio Operator, with the call letters; WA2JHD

He is survived by a brother, Robert John (Elestia) Greene of Acworth, GA, many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and a Goddaughter, Betty McCarthy of Belmont. He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by a two sisters, Barbara (William) Hood, and Betty (Lloyd) Brown, and a niece, Sharon Pham.

Everett E. Rossman

Belmont, NY - Everett E. Rossman, 89, of 5000 State Route 19, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at home with his family at his side. He was born January 31, 1929 in Belmont, the son of the late Walter and Edith (Eymer) Rossman. On November 23, 1947 in Belmont he married Marian Brown who predeceased him on October 19, 2015. 

Everett was a lifelong resident of Belmont. He was first employed on local dairy farms, he delivered milk, and worked in advertising for local retail businesses. He later worked at Wheel Puller in Scio, the New York State Department of Conservation, and for 39 years he was a machinist at Worthington Corporation ~ Dresser-Rand in Wellsville.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and rebuilding Hit-and-miss engines. 

He is survived by two daughter, Debra (Tracy) Slaughter, and Dawn (Jeff) Stuck, both of Belmont, two grandchildren, Jeff (Crystal) Bogle and Brianne Bogle, three great-grandchildren, Kiri, Elijah, and Lillian Bogle, a brother, Lawrence Rossman of Bolivar, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a brother, Richard Rossman.

Jon C. Manning



Scio, NY - Jon C. Manning, age 77, of Charles Street passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 28, 1941 in Wellsville to Charles and Helen Steenworth Manning. On July 25, 1964 in Wellsville he married Mary Ellen Murray who survives.


Jon was a life long resident of the Scio- Belmont area who graduated from Belmont Central High School. He was a very good baseball pitcher who turned down a try out with the New York Yankees to serve his country. From 1959 until 1963 he served with the Seabees all through out the South Pacific and in Alaska. He was a machinist for Dresser Rand in Wellsville for 35 year retiring in 2003.For a time he and his wife owned and operated Manning's Grocery Store in Belmont. Jon was a member of the American Legion Post #808 of Belmont, a member of the National Rifle Association, and the American Trap Shooting Association. He was a dedicated trap shooter who shot in many local leagues with yearly trips to Elysburg, Pennsylvania, and several to the Ohio Grand. Jon was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed spending time with his dogs at his hunting cabin.

Surviving besides his wife of  54 years are 2 daughters, Julie (Tim)  Mitchell of Scio, and Barb (Don)  Dodge of Wellsville; 9 grandchildren, Caitlin Nolan, Connor Nolan, Justin Mitchell, Jessica Mitchell, Tawny Mitchell, Teal Davis, Kyle Guinnip, Ryan Dodge, and Adam Dodge; a great grandson, Joshua Dodge; a brother in law, Dave Mapes, 2 sisters in law Lynn Manning, and Sue( Ed)  Horn; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother Robert Manning, and a sister Penny Mapes.

Robert Guy Sands

Avoca, NY - Robert Guy Sands, age 76, of Pinecrest Home for Adults, in Avoca, NY passed away peacefully on 20 August, 2018.  "Bob", the son of Milton and Elizabeth (Cassidy) Sands was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 17, 1942.  His early years were spent in Philadelphia, PA, Spring Lake, MI, and Doylestown, PA.  

He was a 1963 graduate of Penn State University and the University of Detroit Law School in 1966.  He was employed as a public defender in the traffic court of  downtown Detroit, MI. and in February of 1967 entered the US Air Force Officer Training School, receiving a medical discharge later that year.  He was then employed by the Office of Economic Opportunity in Philadelphia, PA moving to Wellsville, NY and most recently the Pinecrest Home for Adults in Avoca, NY where he resided for the last 8 years.  

He is survived by a brother, Milton J. Sands Jr., MD  of Charleston, SC, 3 nephews and 1 niece.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on August 24, 2018 at 11AM at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, NY.  Internment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, in Wellsville.

Rudolph C. “Rudy” Briggs

Yorks Corners, NY - Rudolph C. “Rudy” Briggs, age 87, of the Stannards Road passed away on Monday August 20, 2018, at Buffalo General after a short illness. He was born on August 10, 1931 in Wellsville to George and Rotha Hazlett Briggs. On May 22, 1959 in Shongo he married Delores Hilligas who survives.

Rudy was a life long resident of this area who graduated from Wellsville Central High School. He served with U.S. Army from 1951 until 1954 earning the Korean Service Medal with 4 bronze stars. He had worked for Air Preheater and later became a dairy farmer. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the American Legion Post #702 in Wellsville.

Surviving besides his wife of 59 years are a son, Michael (Rebecca)  Briggs of Independence; a daughter, Julie (Brad)  Cunningham of Willing; 4 grandchildren, Shannon (Shane)  Dunbar, Ryott (Kait)  Briggs, Brittany (Captain Phillip)  Sutton, and 2nd Lieutenant Zackary (Mikela)  Cunningham; a great grandson, Sterling Briggs; a brother and sister in-law, Matt (Sandy)  Knehpler; 2 nieces, and a nephew.

Patty Lynn Cain

Belmont, NY - Patty Lynn Cain, 34, passed away on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, under the loving care of her grandma, and cousin, Darnise Cain. She was born on February 28, 1984 in Wellsville. She was a 2001 graduate of Tonawanda High School, and was formerly employed by Job Corps in Cassadaga, NY. She resided in Santa Cruz, California for 11 years, returning to the Wellsville area in May of this year.

She is survived by her parents, Joseph and Milissa (Cain) Carmona of Wellsville, her maternal grandmother, Patricia Dunning of Belmont, paternal grandmother, Linda Ramirez, and her husband, Jose Olmos-Hernandez of California, two sons, David Limage, and Hunter Carmona, three brothers, Lance (Lily) Malatka of California, David “Cru” Malatka of Wellsville, and Joseph Nolan Carmona of Wellsville, several aunts and uncles, including, Mary K. “Shu-Shu” (Steve) VanEtten, a niece, Arianna “Little Sissy” Malatka, a nephew, Lincoln Malatka, and several cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved maternal grandfather, David Frank Dunning.

Jody V. Glass

Wellsville, NY - Jody V. Glass, age 64, of South Main Street passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at his home. He was born on January 26, 1954 in Wellsville to Harold “Bud”and Shirley George Glass. On August 6, 1988 in Wellsville he married Bonnie Rouse who survives.

Jody grew up in Allentown where he attended school and graduated from Scio Central High School in 1971. He graduated from Genesee Community College in Batavia with a degree in Police Science, later from BOCES with an LPN degree, and finally from the Alfred State College School of Nursing as an RN. Jody held many jobs while in college to support himself and began his nursing career, as an RN, at the former St. Francis Hospital in Olean and later at Olean General Hospital. He moved to Paris, TN. where he worked for the Paris Health Care Center in the mental health unit. Several years ago he Bonnie returned to this area due to his ill health.

Surviving besides his wife are, a son Jody Glass of Florida; a daughter, Sara Sallazzo of Wellsville; 2 step daughters, Mary Ann Kemp of Wellsville, and Joan Kemp of Lexington, KY.; 3 grandchildren,including Derrick and Michael Sallazzo; 2 step grandchildren, Devan Kemp and Angel Prial; 3 sisters, Glenna (Jack)  Clark of Andover, Lou Anne Glass of Allentown, and Julie (Bob)  Wilkins of The Villages, FL.; 2 brothers, Terry (Vince)  Glass of Coloma, CA., and Randy (Debbie)  Glass of Whitesville; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Kenneth Glass in 1951.

Friends are invited to call at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville on Monday, August 13, 2018 from 11 am until 1 pm.
