Dawn Michelle Hall-Layman

Wellsville, NY - Dawn Michelle Hall-Layman, 48, of 3784 Weinhauer Hill Road died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at home. She was born April 9, 1964 in Toms River, NJ the daughter of Howard and Martha (Jackson) Hall. On July 13, 2002 in Wellsville she married Robert Layman who survives.

She was formerly employed at the Modern Diner and was currently employed as a cook and waitress at Castaways. She was an avid singer and enjoyed "Open Mic Night" at the VFW. She also enjoyed canning, cooking and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving in addition to her husband is her mother, Martha Hall of Loris, SC, one son, John Johnson of Wellsville, three daughters, Amelia (Jason) Workman of Andover, Crystal Johnson of Andover and Renee Layman of Wellsville, five grandchildren, Destiny, Naudia, Zander, Mylah and Aliza, one brother, Christopher Hall of Wellsville, four sisters, Sasha Montbelle of Andover, Yvonne (Dave) Volkmar of Arcadia, FL, Cathy (Jim) Royer of Loris, SC and Julie (Bryan) Holtz of North Dakota, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Howard Hall.

Farr L. Mehle

Wellsville, NY - Farr L. Mehle, 75, of 2805 Lindy Lane died Friday, (October 26, 2012) at Jones Memorial Hospital follow a brief illness. She was born February 25, 1937 in Drexel Hill, PA the daughter of the late Edger and Arline (Mc Ilnay) Lindenmuth. 

Farr was raised in Drexel Hill and moved to Arizona in 1968; where she was employed as the Director of Nursing at the Kivel Nursing Home in Phoenix. She moved to Wellsville in 2005 to be near her son. She was a wonderful cook and a gifted artist. She loved art, home design, interior decorating, Native American Culture, reading and visiting with the artists at the Wellsville Creative Art Center.  

She is survived by one son Linden "Neel" (Sara) Geshwind of Wellsville, five grandchildren, Brannen, Murphy, Sara, Nathan and Aretha, two great grandchildren, Cloey and Caleb.

Alpheus R. Streeter

Wellsville, NY - Alpheus R. Streeter, 88, of 46 Wheeler Place died Saturday, (October 27, 2012) at home. He was born June 2, 1924, at his family's home in Wilmington, VT the son of Earl G. and Mary A. (Sheenan) Streeter. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1942 and in 1943; he graduated from St. Joseph's business College in Bennington, VT. In 1953, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in business education from the University of Vermont in Burlington. From 1953 to 1954, he did extensive study at SUNY Plattsburgh. After summer school at Siena College in Loudonville, and Russell Sage in Albany in 1956, he received his education master's degree in secondary school administration in 1959 from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. He was a member of Lambda Iota Fraternity and its board of governors from 1953 -1964. He also was a member of Kappa Phi Kappa, an honorary education society.

Al served in the United States Army from 1943-1946 with the Office of the Surgeon General in the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany. He also served from 1950-1951 with the Army's Office of Inspector General at Camp Edwards, Mass., during the Korean War.

On October 13, 1962, at St. Patrick's Church in Port Henry, he married Senta M. Dombrowsky who survives. He was employed as a teacher and assistant principal at Crown Point Central School in Essex County from 1954 to 1963. He was an assistant professor at Jamestown Community College from 1963-1965. In 1965, he moved to Wellsville and from then until his retirement in 1990, he was an associate professor in the math department at Alfred State College.

Al was involved in many professional, religious and civic organizations, including the Association of University Professors, AARP and St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was a member of the Olean Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, a Eucharistic minister and board of education member for the Immaculate Conception Church and School. He was a charter member, secretary and president of the Kiwanis Club in Wellsville and served two terms as lieutenant governor for the Kiwanis Southwestern Division of New York State. He was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts and enjoyed skiing, traveling, water and oil painting and was a talented calligrapher. His family was paramount in his life, along with his church and religion.

Surviving in addition to his wife are six sons, John Streeter of Hornell; Todd (Georgia) Streeter of Spencerport; twin sons Darryle (Maria) Streeter of Batavia and Douglas (Theresa) Streeter of Rochester; Patrick Streeter of Evansville, Ind.; and Kyle (Melanie) Streeter of Wellsville; 2 sisters in law, Eleanor Streeter of Randolph, VT., and Priscilla Streeter of Sandwich, Mass.; a brother in law, Donald [Lila] Dombrowsky of St. Augustine, FL.; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret and four brothers, George, Richard, Frederick and Edward Streeter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 12:30 pm in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville with Rev. Sean DiMaria as Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Addie G. Peterson

Wellsville, NY - Addie G. Peterson, 92 years old and a 90 year resident of Wellsville died Ocotber 25, 2012 after more than a four year battle with heart failure and other health problems. She was born in Andover and moved to Wellsville when she was 2 years old. She graduated from Wellsville High School in 1938, where she was Valedictorian of her class.

Her four year health battle took her to 7 different hospitals from Houston to Rochester and included more than 50 emergency calls for EMS and more than 50 hospital stays. Even during this difficult battle she kept her positive outlook and many times stated: "I've had a good life". She made the most of her life including to the end. She enjoyed her family and family vacations, her many pets over the years, cooking, country music (she saw about 100 singers in concert), flowers, travel ing and her 45 year career at National Fuel Gas which included its predecessors Bradley Oil, Empire Gas Iroquois Gas.

She traveled extensively to about 31 States, cruised to the Caribbean and visited her son, when he lived in Paris, and took a family driving tour of France, Belgium Holland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden which was the original home of her mother's and father's families. Except for the past 2 years, when her health prevented travel, she spent more than 20 winters in Texas with her family. She greatly enjoyed her second home on Keuka lake as well as annual family vacations in the Finger Lakes and Round Lake in Canada before the Keuka Lake home was purchased in 1967.

She shared with her husband, Chet, the life and family raising philosophy that: "Along the Way One Should Take Time to Smell Flowers".

She was the daughter of Mary Johnson Gustafson and Oscar Gustafson of Wellsville. She is survived by her son Bob Peterson, and daughter, Marcia Peterson of Houston and Wellsville respectively. She is preceded by husband, Chet Peterson and son, Larry Peterson as well as her sister Lois Gustafson and bothers Carl Gustafson and Donnie Gustafson. She is also survived by sister-in-Iaws Janice Gustafson of Wellsville and Dolly Peterson of Buffalo as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was a Cub Scout den mother and a member of many organizations including the Red Hat Ladies. She was the secretary of Bradley Oil's Boandga Club in Scio. She was life long member of the Christian Temple.

She did have a good life and did take time along the way to smell the flowers.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 pm Sunday at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville and the funeral will be at the Christian Temple Church Monday at II am. Rev. Ralph Eastlack will preside the service with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials in her name can be made to the SPCA. She loved all animals dearly. Lyle A. Eymer

Wellsville, NY - Lyle A. Eymer, age 83, of Whitney place passed away on Tuesday, October 23, at  Highland Park. He was born on March 6, 1929 in Belmont to Lewis and Maggie Rossman Eymer. On March 6, 1952 in Wellsville he married Doris Rahr who predeceased him on February 22, 1982.

Lyle was a wonderful husband, father, friend and fiancé. He loved to travel the United States in his motor home and in later years going to Sampson State Park on Seneca Lake, where he had been stationed upon his return from Korea. Lyle had a large group of devoted camping friends and enjoyed watching war movies and cowboy movies. He served his country in both the Air Force and the Merchant Marines. Lyle was employed by Air Preheater in Wellsville from where he retired in 1992 after 35 years of service.

Survivors include: His fiancé, Marlene Rose of Wellsville; 2 daughters, Cynthia (Bill) Engelder of Allegany and Lonnie (Mark) Van Tyne of Canton, OH.; 4 grandchildren, Valarie Engelder Vought, Erin Eymer Engelder, Lauren Elizabeth Van Tyne and Bradley S. Van Tyne; a great granddaughter, Olivia Katherine Vought; brothers and sisters in law; several nieces and nephews; Marlene's daughters, Janet (Bill Sweet) Kemp and Jeanine Weinhauer; special friend, Kirby Cline and his beloved cat Lucy.

Lyle was predeceased by: his wife Doris; 3 brothers, Lewis Eymer Jr., Gilbert Eymer and David Eymer; 2 sisters, Judy Knopp and Mary Rahr.

Miriam Moss Keeling Naftal

Austin, TX - Miriam Moss Keeling Naftal, 97, currently of Austin, TX passed away on October 11, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emanuel B. Naftal; her parents, Pastor Emeritus of the First Methodist Church of Wellsville, Rev. George Keeling and Charlotte Moss Keeling; sister, Verna Kelly; and three brothers-in-laws. Left to celebrate her life are 2 sisters, Grace Thonet of Austin, TX and Charlotte Owen of Laguna Hills, CA; 4 nieces, 2 nephews, 6 great nieces and their families. Paulena McDowell Piper

Wellsville, NY - Paulena McDowell Piper, 88, of 3441 Moonlight Drive passed away Tuesday, (October 23, 2012 at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born February 14, 1924 in Tioga, PA the daughter of the late Zora and Helen (Torrence) LaPolt. On January 18, 1944 in Wellsville married Gerald L. McDowell who predeceased her on October 1, 1996. On August 20, 2001 she married Edward W. Piper who predeceased her on March 28, 2011. 

Paulena was very active in the United Methodist Church of Wellsville and in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Burton Chapter #129 of the Eastern Star; honorary member of the Olean Order of the Amaranth; Past Matron of the Burton Chapter #129 O.E.S; Past District Deputy Grand Matron, Allegany District O.E.S; Past Royal Matron of Friendship Court #59 Order of Amaranth; Past District Deputy Grand Royal Matron, Order of Amaranth; Past Grand Musician, Order of Amaranth and Organist for Burton Chapter, Friendship Court and Emmanus Shrine. Paulena worked in many fields including owning and operating Jeri's Beauty Shop, working for Wellsville Burial Case, dental assistant of Dr. Harvey Spencer, bookkeeper and secretary for Scoville Brown, legal secretary for Ellis J. Hopkins and later for J. Donald Hauselt. Paulena wrote many presentations for various Masonic orders over the years, taught Sunday School and directed the children's choir for many years at the United Methodist Church, did handiwork as a hobby, presenting many handmade items to her friends and performed vocal selections with her sister, Louise, at many Masonic functions. 

Survivors include: a son, Jerry L. McDowell of Rochester; a grandson, Richard J. McDowell of Rochester; a granddaughter, Emma McDowell of Rochester; a sister, Louise E. Brown of Wellsville; a nephew, Todd F. [Marylise] of Virginia Beach, VA. ; a great nephew, William F. Brown of Virginia Beach, VA.
