Lawrence "Larry" Hannigan


Wellsville, NY - Lawrence "Larry" Hannigan, age 87, of 26 Fassett Lane passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013,at the Comfort House of Allegany County. He was born on May 10, 1925in Wellsville and was the only child of Ida E. Hannigan. On December 15, 1951 in Belmont he married Mildred R. Bartlett who survives.

Larry graduated from Wellsville High School in 1943 and soon joined the US Army. He served with the 70th Tank Battalion 4th Infantry landing in Normandy during the D Day landings and was decorated with a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. On June 3, 2000 he received the Jubilee of Liberty Medal from the Governor of Normandy and on April 26, 2011 he was appointed as Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the President of the French Republic. Larry had worked for the former Scoville Brown Store and the former Wellsville Burial Case. He later went to work for CE Air Preheater and retired from there in 1982 after 32 years of service. In his retirement Larry worked for a time at the ARC in Alfred and later for Darryl Ordway maintaining the grounds at Air Preheater in Wellsville. Larry was an avid hunter and trout fisherman who knew where every black berry patch was in Allegany County. He was a 29 year member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church of Wellsville as well as member American Legion Post 702 of Wellsville.

Surviving besides his wife: 3 daughters, Cindy Hannigan of Wellsville, Sheri Hannigan of Wellsville and Kim Hannigan and son in law Richard Lilley of Swiftwater, PA.; 2 grandsons, Duncan and Conor Lilley; several cousins and numerous brothers and sisters in law.

Friends are invited to call on Saturday, February 2, 2013, from 3 to 4 pm at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. Larry's funeral service will be held at 4 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Eastlack presiding with in Bath National Cemetery. Memorials in Larry's name may be made to, Mercy Flight or The Allegany County Comfort House or to your local volunteer ambulance corps.   1. My sympathy to all the family on your loss. I have wonderful memories of "Mr. Hannigan" from all the times I was at your house growing up. I remember his smile most of all and all his jokes.
