Margaret K. Mersereau

Wellsville, NY - Margaret K. Mersereau, 98, formerly of 4604 Bolivar Road, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born February 20, 1911 in LaGrange, IL, the daughter of George E. and Louise (Colelman) Knowles. On April 10, 1946 in LaGrange, IL she married John R. Mersereau who predeceased her in August 1983.

Margaret was a resident of Wellsville since 1968 and previously resided on Long Island. She was employed as a legal secretary in Washington DC during WWII and later with the B. Altman & Company Department Store in Manhasset. She was a member of the Wellsville Business and Professional Club and was instrumental in organizing the Jones Memorial Hospital Meals on Wheels program. Margaret was a member of the Jones Memorial Hospital Olive and Mulberry Twigs. She was elected three times as president of JMH Auxiliary and served as chairman of the JMH Country Fair numerous times. She was past president of the Allegany County Garden Club. Margaret was a member of the Alfred Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

She is survived by three stepsons, Mark J. Mersereau of Springfield, MA, Basil N. (Debra) Mersereau of Wellsville, Jonathan H. (Lois) Mersereau of Joliet, IL, four grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Also loving friends, Barb and Bill Gordon, Marge and Larry Vossler of Wellsville and lifelong friend Virginia Wilder and Goddaughter Ginny Leigh Wilder of Atlanta, GA. Margaret had many friends from the Unitarian Fellowship. She was predeceased by her son William R. Mersereau, three brothers and one sister.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 15, 2010, at 2:00 pm at the J. W. Embser & Son Funeral Home, Wellsville with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Refreshments will be provided at 3:00 pm by the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in the Walchli Room.

Memorial suggestions include the JMH Auxiliary Memorial Fund, 191 North Main Street, Wellsville or the Wellsville Business & Profession Women's Club Scholarship Fund, c/o Barb Gordon, 73 Hills Street, Wellsville.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the J. W. Embser Funeral Home, Wellsville.
