Martha “Marty” K. Tezak

Wellsville, NY - Martha “Marty” K. Tezak, 75, of 450 N. Main St, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on Thursday, 18 October 2018 at her home.  She was born in Baltimore, MD, on 11 August 1943 to Martha and James Leyko.  She is a graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame HS in 1961 and from Villa Julie Junior College in Baltimore in 1964.  She was employed by the Miles & Stockbridge law firm in Baltimore, MD, Chandler & Company investments in Beverly Hills, CA, and served as the Executive Secretary of the Constitution Island Assn at West Point. In addition to her years at Marine Midland Bank and USP&IRA (the military investment company (now known as First Command) in Highland Falls, NY she was Assistant Editor for the Association of Graduates’ (West Point) alumni magazine, Assembly.  She was secretary for the Mohawk Valley Business Women’s Network in Utica, NY.

Her main athletics were annual bowling leagues where her high game and series were 233 and 616, and golfing which included Pinehurst, Pebble Beach and St Andrews in Scotland as well as the annual Member-Guest Tournaments with her daughter Chris sponsored by the Ladies Golf Association of the Wellsville Country Club. She enjoyed skiing at Killington, Lake Placid, Copper Mountain and Breckenridge.  She was also an avid reader and social bridge player.

Marty was Publicity Chairperson for the Monday Club, a women’s interest group, and Treasurer for Hemlock Twig of Jones Memorial Hospital. She was a member of a quilting group affectionately known as the Old Crows, was involved with the Immaculate Conception Church Alter Guild and as the Social Chairperson for the Wellsville Country Club.  At West Point she was a member of the Officers’ Wives Club, worked the Blood Bank and received the Red Cross Volunteer Award.

She traveled all over the United States accompanying her husband to various educational conferences.

She created, owned and operated her own company, MLT Monogramming & Gifts at West Point, Utica and Wellsville NY.  That was her pride and joy for 28 years.  She is survived by her husband Ed, of 52 years, her daughter Christine (Chuck Quinley) and her son Scott (Anne). She was the devoted grandmother of Michael.

Visitation will take place at the J.W. Embser & Sons Funeral Home between 2 and 4 PM and 7 and 9 PM on Thursday, October 25, 2018.  Marty was a devout practicing catholic who took her religion seriously.  Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 AM Friday, October 26, 2018 in Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.

Donald W. Mong

Scio, NY - Donald W. Mong, 70, of 2754 County Road 9, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at home. He was born on June 9, 1948 in Wellsville the son of Jay D. and Mabel S. (Wheaton) Mong. On July 3, 1971 in Salamanca he married Judith Kielaszek who survives.

Don was a 1966 graduate of Wellsville High School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He began his career with Worthington Corporation in Wellsville, and for 38 years he was employed by Alstom Air Preheater Company in Wellsville, retiring in 2010. He was a former member of the Scio Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Ducks Unlimited, and Genesis Bible Church in Scio.   

Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Theron (Jennifer) Mong of Williamsville, a daughter, Adrianne (Jeff) Donaldson of Plano, TX, three grandchildren, Helena and Gavin Mong, and Savannah Donaldson, his mother, Mabel Mong of Wellsville, a brother, Robert (Nancy) Mong of Epping, NH, a sister, Brenda Szabo of Wellsville, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father.

Geraldine Betty Bogle

Wellsville, NY - Geraldine Betty Bogle, 84, of 3983 Fords Brook Road South Branch passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Jones Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born October 16, 1934 in the Town of Willing, the daughter of the late Rev. William A. and Rev. Ruth L. (Morland) Brownell. On March 17, 1963 in West Bingham, Pennsylvania she married Thomas C. Bogle Sr. who survives.

“Gerry” was raised on Fords Brook Road South Branch and attended Wellsville High School. She was employed by ACES at the Wellsville Campus of Alfred State College, and later at the Central Dinning Hall on the Alfred Campus. She retired in 1997. She was a devoted Christian, and a caring, and loving mother and wife. She formerly attended the Riverside Assemble of God, and the Wellsville Full Gospel Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband is a son, Gary (Mary) Dunham of Howard, a daughter, Roxanne Maxcy of Andover, three granddaughters, one grandson, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her parents by a son Thomas C. Bogle Jr. on April 23, 1998, two brothers, Robert and William Brownell, and one sister, Helen Green.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm at the Wellsville Full Gospel Church, 2221 Hanover Hill Road, Wellsville. The funeral will follow visitation at 2:00 pm in church with Pastor Jessie Tanner presiding. Burial will be in York Corners Cemetery. Howard E. Lamphier

Wellsville, NY - Howard E. Lamphier, 85, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018. He was born in Wellsville, the son of the late Elmer and Eva (Chandler) Lamphier.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Lamphier, a daughter, Marcia Lamphier (Marshall Hammond), a sister Freida Ballerstein, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a son, Gene Lamphier.

At Howard's request, a private celebration of his life is being planned for a later date. 

Marian E. (Brandes) Graves

Daytona Beach, Florida - Marian E. (Brandes) Graves, 90, passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at the Carlton Shores Nursing Home in Daytona Beach, Florida. 

She was born on March 11, 1928, the daughter of Melvin and Marie (Pohl) Brandes, who had resided on Beach Hill in the Town of Willing. On July 28, 1946 she married Richard Graves who predeceased her on July 1, 2018.

Marian was a 1946 graduate of Wellsville High School, and worked throughout her life, retiring at the age of 82.   

She is survived by a son, Ronald (Vicki) Graves of Oregon, and a daughter, Linda Graves of Florida, three grandchildren,Sarah Graves of Oregon, Alicia (Ben) Port of Oregon, and Dr. Jason (Anna) Graves of England, five great grandchildren, Shelby, Carter, and Olly Port of Oregon, and Zofia, and Justav Graves of England, four sisters, Marette Pace of California, Myrtle (Louie) Smith of Wellsville, Marcella Graves of Scio, and Margaret (Carl) Cross of Wellsville, one brother, Melvin (June) Brandes of Wellsville, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her husband of 71 years, by a son, Stephen, and an infant daughter, Susan.

Virginia Foster Bassett

Alfred, NY - Virginia Foster Bassett, 101, passed away peacefully at Jones Memorial Hospital on September 23, 2018 after a brief illness. 

Virginia resided at Manor Hills Assisted Living Facility in Wellsville, NY for the past three years. Previously, she made her home on West University Street in Alfred, NY for eighty-three years, having lived on both sides of the same street from her teenage years into her late nineties.  

Born on March 14, 1917 in Shongo, NY to Archie and Fannie Clark Foster, Virginia was one of eight children. On April 4, 1946, she married Leon Bassett who predeceased her in 1973. 

Virginia met her husband while working as a telephone operator in her early career. She was later employed by Alfred University College of Ceramics and by Olive Watson, founder of Honey Pot Candy in Alfred.  Virginia purchased the business and moved the operation to 41 West University Street in Alfred in 1977. She created hand-dipped confections with the aid of her sister, Francelia McGraw. Honey Pot Chocolates remains a thriving business under the direction of Connie McGraw, Virginia's niece. 

Virginia was very community minded and enjoyed fellowship at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Alfred. She was a loyal member of the Republican Party in Allegany County.  Both local and national causes benefited from Virginia's generous contributions of time and funds. Virginia was an avid reader, a fan of local history, and baked the only truly great molasses cookies that ever existed. 

Her parents, her siblings, William Foster, Dorotha Harris, Archie Edward Foster, Fannie McGill, Francelia McGraw, Loie Odell, Eugene Foster, their spouses, and a nephew, Dale Foster, all predeceased her. 

Virginia is survived by twelve nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and great-nephews and their offspring. Several cousins also survive. 

Strong-willed and incredibly resilient, Virginia will be missed for her generosity, sharp wit and endless resolve.  

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Seventh Day Baptist Church on Church St. in Alfred, NY.  Rev. Christian Mattison will officiate.  Burial will be in Alfred Rural Cemetery.

Raymond H. Wetherby

Belmont, NY - Raymond H. Wetherby, 88, of 6005 Feathers Creek Road passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Olean General Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on September 25, 1929 in Ischua, the son of Charles and Phoebe (Clayson) Wetherby. On November 8, 1985 in Frewsburg he married Delores G. Jordan who survives.

Raymond was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with U. S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He was employed by the former I.W. Miller & Son of Olean as a truck driver for 19 years, and more recently by Abbott Welding Supply Inc. as a driver and pumper; retiring on March 31, 1993. 

Surviving in addition to his wife Delores, are three sons, Dayrl “Buz” Wetherby of Hinsdale, Gary “Tim” Wetherby, and Randy Wetherby both of Ischua, three daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Wetherby of Ischua, Lisa K. Perry of Linestone, and Theresa R. Benjamin of Virginia, three step daughters, Virginia Cox of Little Genesee, Penny A. Shipman, and Cindy L. Jordan both of Belmont, three stepsons, Ricky D. Jordan, Gary L. Jordan, and Teddy E. Jordan all of Belmont, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, one sister, Geraldine Baham of Gainsville, FL, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Kendall N. Wetherby, two brothers, Kendall Wetherby, and Harold “Dean” Wetherby, and two sisters, Fannie Morgan, and Gwen Germain.
