Mabel M. Budinger

Belmont, NY - Mabel M. Budinger, 73, of 5739 Church Street passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness. She was born August 30, 1940 in Corning the daughter of Jesse and Idabelle (Sutton) Horton. On April 22, 1977 in Belmont she married Harold R. Budinger who predeceased her on January 24, 2003.

Mabel was raised in the Campbell area. She was the owner and operator of Mabel's Place in Belvidere and for many years she was the bookkeeper for Budinger Wrecking. She loved spending time with her grandchildren; antiquing and playing the lottery.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Stacy) Budinger of Portville and Richard Budinger of Hornell, five grandchildren, Sienna, Halle, Gavin, Kirsten and Brooke, seven stepchildren, Harold (Monica) Budinger of Angelica, Lillian Budinger, Allen Budinger and Donna Budinger all of Friendship, Larry Budinger of Arkansas, Timothy Budinger and Betty-Jean (Dan) Smith both of Tennessee, several step grandchildren and great grandchildren, four brothers, Lawrence, Elmer, Charles and Richard Horton, five sisters, Josephine Tyler, Vera Morisman, Sarah Manning, Shirley Hollister and Sharon Daley as well as several nieces & nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert Budinger, two stepsons, Gerald and Aaron Budinger, two daughters-in-law, Paula and Barb Budinger and four brothers, Jesse, Ernie, Robert and Tom Horton.

The family visitation will be on Friday, December 13, 2013 beginning at 6:00 pm and friends are invited to call on Friday from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., 17 Schuyler Street in Belmont. The service will follow at 8:00 pm in the funeral home with Rev. Merritt Burdick presiding. Beverly Lillian Grantier

Beverly Lillian Grantier of 2794 Hallsport Road Wellsville, NY passed away unexpectedly as a result of a motor vehicle accident on Sunday November 24, 2013 in Chambersburg, PA at the age of seventy seven. Beverly lived a full life with tremendous love for family, friends and community. She will be remembered as an incredibly altruistic person who had a positive influence on many lives.

Beverly was born on October 21, 1936 in Akron, Ohio to the late Irene Beardshaw Molner and George Molner. She resided near Mogador, Ohio for most of her childhood nurtured by her extended family. In 1954 Beverly graduated from Franklin Academy in Malone, NY.

In 1957 Beverly earned her degree in nursing from Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY allowing her to fulfill her lifelong commitment to helping others. While in Nursing School, she met her future husband, Gordon Grantier, through a classmate. The couple established their friendship, romance grew and on November 27, 1958, Beverly married Gordon at the Stannards Methodist Church. The couple established their home in Wellsville where they raised their three children; Denise, Garth and Scott.

During Beverly's nursing career, she worked for Jones Memorial Hospital in addition to many local physicians' offices and in industry until her eventual transition to school nursing which allowed her to serve youth and children who were always so dear to her heart. After retiring from her nursing career, Beverly continued her passion for helping others as she served for many different programs and organizations with her unique and genuine selflessness. Beverly was a hardworking and devoted member of the Wellsville and Stannards United Methodist Church where she served in many supportive capacities and presented sermons occasionally as a Lay Speaker.

Beverly served as the secretary for the Stannards Cemetery for over thirty years. Another program dear to her heart was her volunteer work for the Allegany County Office of the Aging. She was passionate in helping the senior citizens of her community.

Beverly enjoyed many special friendships and shared her joyfulness, humor, wisdom and love. She deeply cherished the strong bonds within a sisterhood of her "Tea Party Ladies" consisting of Diane Chandler, Linda Fanton, Christina Wightman, Mary Embser and the late Sandy Dillie.

Beverly is survived by her husband Gordon; daughter Denise (Mark) Wilmot of Horseheads, NY; two sons, Garth Grantier of Alfred, NY; and Scott (Erica) Grantier of Belmont, NY. Beverly was the proud, loving grandmother of Marie Sherwood, Naomi (Eric) Johnston, Vanessa Sherwood, Owen Sherwood, Payton Grantier, Derick Grantier and Elizabeth Grantier. Of all Beverly's achievements in her life, her family was her crowning achievement.

Beverly is also survived by her dear cousins Lynne Taylor of Richmond Heights, Ohio and Phillip (Nancy) McKenna of Palmetto, Florida.

A memorial service will be held in the Spring of 2014 in Wellsville, NY on a date to be announced by the family. Based on Beverly's dedication to helping our community's senior citizens and her dedication to the United Methodist Church, the family would respectfully request that donations in memoriam be given to the Allegany County Senior Foundation in care of Office For The Aging or the United Methodist Church of Wellsville.

E. Helen Link

Wellsville, NY - E. Helen Link, age 85, of the Meservey Hill Road passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at the Highland Park Health Care Center in Wellsville. She was born on April 1, 1928 in Wellsville to Walter C. and Ruth Breneke Hornburg. On February 3, 1951 in Wellsville she married Harold Link who predeceased her on December 6, 2002.

Helen graduated from Wellsville High School and worked for both the Woolworth and Grants Department stores in Wellsville. She later worked the farm with her husband and will be remembered for driving the team of horses during the hay season. She was a very determined and outgoing woman who enjoyed being outside and was devoted to her family. Helen was a devout Christian who would say a prayer anywhere and at any time. She was a life member of the Trinity Lutheran Church who taught Sunday school and had been a member of the couples club. Helen enjoyed birds and was a member of the Allegany County Bird Club as well as an active participant of the Wellsville Senior Center.

She is survived by a son Gary (Nancy) Link of Wellsville and a daughter Linda (Arnold) Hurd of Wellsville; 5 grandchildren, Jackie (Andre) Harris, Ann (Brad) Ball, Amy Hurd, Laura (Andy Hunt) Link and Brian Link; 5 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by a sister Doris Burton.

Friends are invited to call on Saturday from11 to 1 pm in the Trinity Lutheran Church with a funeral service to follow at 1 pm with Pastor Robert Morris presiding. Donald C. Hough

Angelica, NY - Donald C. Hough, 87, formerly of 24 Railroad Avenue passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville with his family at his side. He was born January 9 1926 in Belmont, NY the son of the late Harry Earl and Glada (Mayo) Hough. Don lived most of his life in Angelica where he attended local schools. In his early years he was employed on freighter ships which took him to the Far East, the Mediterranean, Europe and other destinations. He was later employed by New York State as a painter for over 28 years in Rochester and Orangeburg, NY. When he retired, Don was a caregiver to his loving Mother and was never far away if other family members needed a helping hand. He was a devoted son, loving brother and a special uncle.

Don moved to Manor Hills in Wellsville in 2008 where he enjoyed visiting with his friends and watching football and baseball. Don was an avid New York Yankees fan. He loved his independence and up until a few weeks ago, he took daily walks to Burger King for breakfast and to Short's for lunch where he enjoyed talking with the folks. On extra nice days, he would walk to the drug store and to K Mart. A daily visit with his sister Lois was always most important.

Donald was the Mayo and Hough family "historian". Details of loved ones, past and present, were only a thought away in his sharp mind. He never forgot a birthday and enjoyed sending greeting cards. A simple "Love Don" meant so much to those who received Don's cards. His kindness and family values will be missed by all. Don will be remembered by his warm smile, big heart and his love of animals. Don's favorite animal was "Midnight", a big Husky dog that he brought back from his days on board the ships.

Donald is survived and will be deeply missed by his younger sister, Lois Perkins of Wellsville. Don was the epitome of an older brother watching out for his younger sister. "Uncle Don" will be sadly missed by his nieces Cheryl Young and her husband Bob of Wellsville and Sandra Riccaldo of Weston, FL. who shared a special bond with Don and were a phone call away for support or help. He is also survived by nephews Craig and Michael Perkins and eighteen great nieces and nephews. The entire family feels blessed to have had Don in their lives for so long and will cherish the memories of years of love. He is predeceased in addition to his parents by two brothers, Clarence and Clyde Hough, a Sister Lillian Anges and Nephew, Darrell Perkins.

Don's wishes of no viewing or funeral services will be honored and family members ask that any donations in his memory be made to the Angelica Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, 1 Main Street, Angelica, NY 14709. Daniel P. English

Wellsville, NY - Mr. Daniel P. English, 76, passed away serenely this Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Mr. and Mrs. Vincent English welcomed son Daniel into the world on February 21, 1937 in Buffalo.

Daniel attended and graduated from Buffalo's Kensington High School in 1955. He then worked a series of area jobs and concurrently served in the U.S. Army Reserve, attaining the rank of specialist. A degree in business administration from Erie Community College soon followed. In 1966 Daniel married Carol Schrader and thereafter moved to Wellsville. In 1971 their son Richard was born, currently a resident of Charleston, S.C. David followed in 1974, and currently resides in Ithaca. In Wellsville Mr. English steadfastly worked for over three decades as a postal carrier. Accordingly, he swiftly grew to prefer the friendly nature of his adopted small town.

A former city boy, Daniel enjoyed a lifelong affinity for Wellsville's pastoral charm. He keenly favored the tranquility of a spring time creek-bed fossil hunt. Most of all, Daniel developed a lifelong passion and expertise in local Native American arrowheads and culture. To him, a farmer's freshly ploughed field was an undiscovered countryside museum. Daniel loved and relished reading history, coin collecting, travel [unforgivable puns!], his pets, friends and his family.

His wife Carol, sons Richard [Lisa] and David, and Sister Marion[Phil] Fiorentine, of St. James survive him.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, December 10, from 2 to 3 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wellsville. A service of remembrance and celebration will be held in the Church at 3 pm with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville. Memorials in Daniel's name may be given to the SPCA or Trinity Lutheran Church-Outreach.

Robert L. Berg

Charlottesville, VA - Robert L. Berg, 89, of 250 Pantops Mountain Road passed away peacefully on Friday, November 29, 2013 in his home with his family at his side. He was born February 29, 1924 in Bellevue, PA the son of the late George and Amy (Matson) Berg. On January 31, 1959 in Wellsville, NY he married Phyllis Elaine Reuning who predeceased him on August 2, 2004. They were married for 45 glorious years and each adored the other. 

Bob resided in Oak Park, Illinois from 1926 to 1942. He entered Northwestern University after high school, but soon after enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served from 1943 to 1945 as a navigator on a B-29 in the 3rd Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. He bravely flew 23 combat missions over Japan and was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He returned to finish his education at Northwestern from 1946 to 1948 and obtained a B. S. Degree in Chemical Engineering. He was employed by Esso, and subsequently Exxon, for 35 years and for 10 of those years he was posted overseas in Venezuela, Brazil, England, and Singapore. He began his career as a chemical engineer and advanced to being an international marketing executive.

Bob was a wonderful husband and father who deeply valued time spent with his family. He shared his passion for skiing, golf, sailing and long walks outdoors with his sons. He had an adventurous spirit which was fueled by all of his international experiences that he loved to share with all of those around him. As a Leap Year baby, he celebrated some remarkable birthdays, including festive celebrations for his 16th, 18th and 21st birthdays. In his later years, he was fond of remarking that he was doing remarkably well despite his advancing age, and that as long as he ate well, slept well and could take a long walk that he was well satisfied. His positive outlook will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by two sons and their wives, Dr. Carl L. Berg and Dr. Martha L. Barnett of Charlottesville, VA and John A. and Lisa W. Berg of New York City, five grandchildren, Emily, Alison, Alexandra, Michael and Andrew, one sister, Frances Berg of San Francisco, CA as well as several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Al Berg, whom he loved dearly. 

A private service is being planned for a later date. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville, NY. The family suggest memorial donations in lieu of flowers be made in his memory to Northwestern University or the Central and Western Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Donald R. Linza

Shongo, NY - Donald R. Linza, 91, of 469 Route 19 South passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at home with his family and loving wife of 66 years at his side. He was born July 19, 1922 in the Town of Amity the son of the late Max and Faith (Withey) Linza. On August 30, 1947 in Shongo he married Mary Kay Bastian who survives. 

Don was a graduate of Wellsville High School. He was a veteran of WW II serving with the    U. S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 in the European Theater of Operation. He was formerly employed at Hopkins Lumber in Wellsville; Chapman's Furniture in Genesee, PA and for many years was a self employed carpenter. He was a 50 year member of the former Shongo United Methodist Church. 

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, Don (Donita) Linza of Wellsville Stephen (Judy) Linza of Whitesville and Todd (Sharla) Linza of Enid, OK, one daughter, Vicki (Charles) White of Wellsville, six grandchildren, Michelle Denhoff, Richard (Stephanie) Linza, Mark (Janine) Linza, Cullen Linza, Evan Linza and Nicole White, seven great-grandchildren, one sister, Marjorie Layton of Moravia, five brothers, Max (Jerry) Jr. of Houston, TX, Roger (Helen) Linza of Belmont, Raymond (Barbara) Linza of Jamestown, Harley (Phyllis) Linza of Westfield, PA and Gary (Connie) Linza of Wellsville as well as several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Marilyn Ruth Linza, a grandson, Aaron J. White and three brothers, Merle, Ernest and Dale Linza.
