Herbert W. “Herb” Howe III

Belfast, NY - Herbert W. “Herb” Howe III, age 43, passed away on Monday, June, 26, 2017, at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester as a result of injuries sustained in a logging accident. He was born in Buffalo to Herbert W. “Sonny” and Gladys Jean Young Howe II. On July 15, 2012 he married Tara Howard who survives him.

Herb was a long time resident of the Belfast Area who had worked for Union Drilling which was bought out by Side Winder Drilling. He had always loved logging and later started his own company called “Second Time Around Logging”. Herb was a hardworking man who loved to spend one on one time with the kids. He had a deep voice with a booming laugh and was often the life of the party. Herb will be remembered as a man who had deep love for his family and especially for his wife Tara.

Survivors include his wife Tara, his mother Jean Snyder (Howe) of Belfast; 3 stepsons, David (Nikkie) Green of Wellsville, Joshua Howard of Belfast, and Nathan Hunt of Belfast; 2 step daughters, Daphne Hunt of Wellsville, and Joslin Hunt of Belfast; 3 step grandchildren; David Jr., Jayden, and Ashlyn Green; 2 brothers, Lance (Valerie) Snyder of Lancaster, and David (Jaime) Snyder of Dade City, FL.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Pat (Connie Ann) Argentieri of Alden, and Diane Howe of Buffalo; his mother in law Glenna (Jack) Clark of Andover and their families; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Herb was predeceased by his father, Herbert and his sister, Rose Marie.

Friends are invited to call on Saturday, July 1, 2017 from 11 am to 2 pm at the Cross Town Alliance Church on Highland Avenue in Wellsville. The funeral service will take place following the calling hours at 2 pm in the church. Bertha B. Muench

Livonia, NY- Bertha B. Muench, a former resident of Scio, NY, passed away on June 24, 2017 at Conesus Lake Nursing Home.  She was born December 7, 1923, the daughter of the late John E. and Mildred I. (VanHorn) Buzzard, Sr.  In 1942, she married Ralph S. Muench, who predeceased her in 2002.

Bertha was born in Friendship, NY, where her father owned the Chevrolet dealership.  She had a keen mind and enjoyed reading, word challenges, and crossword puzzles.  She employed the dying art of letter writing and was known for her faithful remembrance of birthdays and special occasions. A person of varied talents, Bertha was seldom idle and regularly learned new skills, taking classes in quilting and even chair caning.  Bertha’s greatest joy came through her interactions with people.  She was a warm, social person whose capacity for love and friendship spanned both age and relation. Her smile was genuine and her arms were open. 

Bertha was a Nutrition Site Manager in Alfred, NY for many years with the Office for the Aging.  After raising her family of 8 children on Grand Island, NY, she retired to Scio, NY where she worked for the US Postal Service as a rural route deliverer.  She was a member of St. Joseph’s Altar & Rosary Society, the Schoolhouse Quilters guild, and the 20-20 Investment Group.  

She is survived by seven children, Albert H. (Linda) Muench of Friends Lake, NY; Mary T. “Tess” Hoyer of Belmont, NY; Frances A. Russell of Newton Falls, OH; Elizabeth M. Bill of Crystal Lake, IL; Dr. Jean Muench (Capt. Bruce Kinney) of Snellville, GA; Angela M. Dunham of Wellsville, NY; and Richard E. Muench (Susan) of Livonia, NY; a brother, Harry E. Buzzard of Rochester, NY; and three sisters, Viola B. Mix of Tallahassee, FL; Ruth E. Kensinger Jr. of Kissimmee, FL; and Mary Ann Fanton of Panama City, FL. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, Bertha was predeceased by her brother, John E. Buzzard Jr.; sister, Lois H. Stillman; son, Joseph E. Muench; and her granddaughter, Jenny Bill Mahaffey.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday, June 29th from 5-8 PM at the J. W. Pauline Goldsmith King

Allentown, NY - Pauline Goldsmith King, 84, of 1624 White Hill Road died on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Manor Hills in Wellsville. She was born on July 29, 1932 in Rushford, the daughter of Paul H. and Mary L. (Luckey) James. On August 22, 1951 she married Kenneth R. Goldsmith who predeceased her. On February 14, 1998 in Allentown she married Donald E. King who survives.

Pauline was raised on a dairy farm in Rushford and was a 1950 graduate of Rushford Central School. She attended Buffalo State College and graduated from LaSalle University in Chicago with a degree in Interior Design. She was an interior designer in New York and Pennsylvania for 30 years. She also was an instructor of Interior Design at Niagara University. 

She enjoyed music and played the trombone for her high School band, and in 1944 she joined the Rushford Concert Band. She was a charter member of the Rushford Historical Society and in 2006 she founded the “Band Room” at the Historical Society Building in Rushford. She toured for 13 years with the Bergholz Blasapelle for October Fest all over the United States, Canada and Europe.

Surviving in addition to her husband are five children, Ann Celeste (Dane) Ererton of Watkins Glen, Vance (Bonnie) Goldsmith of Homosassa, Florida, Beth Goldsmith of Allegany, Paul “Jamie” Goldsmith and Lance “Ric” Goldsmith both of Arcade, seven grandchildren, Simon, Amber, Terra, Sophia, Neil, Madison and Jillian, two step daughters, Mary Liz (Steve) Lewis of Andover and Anne Marie King of Allentown, a brother, David James of Cookeville, Tennessee, as well as one niece and one nephew.

Paul Michalegko

Eri, PA - Paul Michalegko, age 97, formerly of Genesee, PA, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at UPMC Hamot.   He was a resident of St. Mary’s at Asbury Ridge.  Paul was born November 16, 1919 in Betula/Keystone, McKean County, PA.  He was the third child of Demetrius and Anastasia (Holowczak) Michalegko. 

Paul graduated from Tionesta High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball.  Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940.  While stationed in Rhode Island, the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred.  After being transferred to the West Coast, he was deployed to the South Pacific where he served in World War II, and engaged in battles at Guadalcanal, Bougainville and New Caledonia.  He was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant.

Following his discharge, he relocated to Genesee, PA.  In 1948, he married his wife Barbara Costello of Wellsville, NY.  They were married for 58 years at the time of her passing on June 29, 2006.  Paul was retired from the Air Preheater/Combustion Engineering of Wellsville, NY.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Barbara, he is preceded  in death by brothers John, Peter and Charles, and two sisters Anna Cimpritz and Maria Michalegko. 

Paul is survived by seven children, Paula Michalegko (Charles Guagliardi), of Erie, Pamela, of Arlington, VA, Richard (Maria), of Lyndon Station, WI, David, Joseph (Cheryl), Susan (Bob Anderson), and Joan Todd (William), of Erie; eight grandchildren: Adam, Ian, Dino, Nicole, Timothy, Shannon, Kiaran and Alina; and nine great grandchildren: Julian, Vincent, Paulina, Alex, Mikayla, Keegan, Mira, Austin and Kiera. He is further survived by his brother Nicholas and his wife Judy of Safford, AZ. 

Paul was a life member of the Genesee Valley Rod and Gun Club as he enjoyed trout fishing. He was a member of the American Legion.  Paul was an active member of Sacred Heart Church for 65 years, where he served as an usher until the age of 94. 

The family would like to extend their deepest thanks and appreciation to the staff at St. Mary’s at Asbury Ridge, for their unfailing care and concern for Paul.  Special thanks to Kayla, who could always make him smile.

There will be no visitation per Paul’s request.   A funeral mass will be conducted at Sacred Heart Church, Genesee, PA on Saturday, June 24th at 10:00 a.m. followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Erie Home for Children and Adults, 226 E. 27th, Erie, PA 16504. Local arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville.

Gladys Marion Hornburg

Wellsville, NY - Gladys Marion Hornburg, 96, of 2938 Truax Road, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017 while visiting her son in Kentucky. She was born on March 25, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Lottie (Freeman) Flint. On April 9, 1940 in Wellsville she married Glenn E. Hornburg who predeceased her on November 8, 2011. 

Gladys moved from Scio to Wellsville in 1938 and graduated from Wellsville High School. She was first employed at Worthington Corporation in Wellsville from 1940 to 1951, J. J. Newberry’s from 1951 to 1954, and later for the Brown and Stout Insurance Agency from 1961, to her retirement in 1982. She was affiliated with the Brookside Wesleyan Church in Wellsville. 

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading, and loved (and was very good at) Rummikub and watching the Yankees. She was also very proud of the fact that after retirement, she and her husband worked together making wooden crafts in their shop.

She is survived by a son, Gary (Debbie) Hornburg of Ashland, KY, a daughter, Janice (George) Givens of Andover, three grandchildren, Maribeth (Shannon) Hausey, Ashland, KY, Dennis Givens and Christi Brewster both of Andover, three great grandchildren, Danielle Armfield, Michelle Schweigart and Marc Givens, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband by her step-mother, Gertrude Graham Flint, two sisters, Dorothea Griffiths, and Irene (Ken) Washburn and one brother, Charles W. Flint.

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm and on Thursday, June 22nd from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the J. W. Bernard E. “Bernie” Jackson

Wellsville, NY - Bernard E. “Bernie” Jackson, 81, of 323 E. Dyke Street, passed on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA with his family at his side. He was born July 21, 1935 in the Town of Willing, the son of the late Erwin and Bessie (Stickney) Jackson. On March 9, 1985 in Wellsville he married Sandra Carr who survives. 

Bernie was raised in the Town of Alma and was a 1954 graduate of Wellsville High School. He was formerly employed at Rochester Products, Dresser-Rand Corporation, Allegany Arc, Harris Supply Company and retired in 2005 from North Main Lumber in Wellsville. He loved riding motorcycles, country music shows, and stock car racing.

Surviving in addition to his wife Sandy, are five children, Hope Jackson of Olean, Judy Jackson of Allegany, Sheila Miller of Virginia, Doug Jackson of Whitesville, and Aaron Jackson of Wellsville, four step-children, Natalie (Brent) Nugent of Syracuse, Kirk Walker of Rochester, Chis (Tisha) Walker of Texas and Karen Walker of West Seneca, eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a grandson, Marine CPL Jason L. Dunham, and four brothers.

Mary G. “Mitzi” Stout

Wellsville, NY - Mary G. “Mitzi” Stout, 85, formerly of Pine Street, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2017 following a sudden illness. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Kathryn Gasdik. In 1951 she married Carlton Stout who predeceased her in 1966.

Mitzi was a 1950 graduate of Wellsville High School. She was formerly employed at Rite Aid and Woolworth’s in Wellsville and from 1975 to 2000 she was the Wellsville Town Clerk. She served as president of the Brooklyn School PTA, and was the registrar for the Girl Scouts. She was a member of the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Wellsville High School Alumni Association, a charter member of the Allegany County Young Republicans, and was an election inspector. She was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Church, where she taught religious education, was a member of the choir, and was active with the annual Fun Fair. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Gamma Phi chapter. Her awards include Award of Excellence from the Wellsville Town Board in 1999.

She is survived by three children, Louise (Rev. Lenny) Anderson of Vancouver, WA, Larry (Terry) Stout of North Tonawanda, and Laura (Jim) Cornell of Norman, OK, a granddaughter, Christine Stout, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband by two brothers, Edward Gasdik and Joseph (Cis) Gasdik, and two sisters, Irene (James) Wasson and Virginia (Edward) Keneske. Mitzi felt blessed to have so many close friends and neighbors in the Wellsville community

Betty L. Sheared

Wellsville, NY - Betty L. Sheared, 74 of 4192A Bolivar Road passed away on Thursday, June 08, 2017 at Jones Memorial Hospital following a long illness. She was born June 24, 1942 in Wellsville, the daughter of the later Fred and Dorothy (Granger) Curry. On September 4, 1966 in Wellsville she married Roy E. Sheared who predeceased her on March 27, 2005.

Betty was a 1960 graduate of Wellsville High School and was a long time resident of Rochester. She was formerly employed at Lakeshore Nursing Home and Via Health Home Care 2, both in the Rochester area. She has resided in Wellsville for the past 10 years.

She is survived by a step-daughter, Wanda Cooper and a step-son, Mark (Grace) Sheared both of Rochester, four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a sister, Marilyn Sworthout of Brooksville, Florida, a brother, Kenneth Curry of Wellsville, a sister-in-law, Lila Curry of Genesee, PA, and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her parents and husband by two brothers, Richard and Edward Curry and two sisters, Marjorie Mitchel and Joyce Darling.

Shirley Yvonne Haskins Foster

Whitesville, NY - Shirley Yvonne Haskins Foster of Whitesville, NY passed away at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY on June 3, 2017 after a brief illness.

Shirley was born on October 31, 1935 to Dorothy (Duell) and Norval L. Haskins Sr., in Coudersport, PA. On October 13, 1956 in Westfield, PA, she married Eugene Foster.

Shirley was a graduate of Cowanesque Valley High School in 1954.

Prior to her marriage, she worked at Lincoln Rochester Bank in Corning, NY. In 1995, Shirley retired from First Federal Savings and Loan in Wellsville, NY.
Shirley was a past president of the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce, served on the Board of Directors for Allegany Country Cooperative Extension Services, was a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and served as a member of the Shongo United Methodist Church in her earlier years.

Shirley was pre-deceased by her husband of 57 years and she passed away on what would have been his 85th birthday. Her parents and an infant daughter also pre-deceased her.

Surviving are her daughter Jane, of Shongo, her son, Doug, of Shongo, her grand-daughters, Tiffany (Eric) Miller of Andover, Liz Kellogg of Seattle, WA and Cait Kellogg of Washington, DC. Preston and Anderson Miller are her great-grandsons. Several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Virginia Bassett, also survive.

Sewing, cooking, gardening, and social media were her hobbies.

Shirley will be missed as the anchor of her family, a friend and confidant, and an outspoken advocate of her beliefs.

A celebration of her life will take place at the Millstone Farm on 4160 Back River Road in Scio, NY on Wednesday, June 7 at 1pm. Friends and family are invited to attend. Interment of her ashes will be at a private ceremony at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home.

Boyd D. Green Sr.



Wellsville, NY - Boyd D. Green Sr., age 87, of Wightman Road passed away on Thursday, June, 1 2017, at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born in Olean to George B. and Mary Green. On February 21, 1953 in Alma he married Shirley Mesler who survives.


Boyd was a long time resident of the Wellsville area who was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Korean Conflict. He drove a truck for most of his life starting out driving for Keystone and later bought his own truck for hire. From 1980 until 1987 Boyd worked for L.C. Whitford Company in Wellsville and then he began driving for Bakers of Jerico Hill from where he retired in 1991. In 1994 he came out of retirement to drive for his son and daughter in law at B. and R. Green Trucking Company until his second retirement in 2011. Boyd was a life member of the Frank B. Church VFW Post 2530 of Wellsville who enjoyed traveling in his motor home. He and Shirley drove out West, to Canada, to Alaska, and spent 16 winters in Florida. Boyd loved car races including watching his son “JR” race and NASCAR. Boyd will be remembered as a hardworking man who had a great sense of humor, loved his pets, and had a sweet tooth.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Shirley; a daughter Kimberly McDowell of Belmont; a son Boyd D. “JR” (Robin) Green Jr. of Wellsville; 2 granddaughters, Sherrie (Paul) Allen of Painted Post, and Kasey McDowell of Belmont; several nieces and nephews; his care givers Lena and Felicia; his beloved dog, Babe.

Boyd was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Green, 2 sisters, Naomi Baldwin, and Iola Dickerson; a brother, Donald Green.

Friends are invited to call on Monday, June 5, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 am in the funeral home with Reverend Bill Sylor followed by a burial with full military honors in Woodlawn Cemetery.
