Scott E. Horn


Alexandria, Virginia - Scott E. Horn, 44, of 5375 Duke Street passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 22, 2014 at home. He was born June 16, 1970 in Wellsville the son of Edward D. and Charlotte (Clark) Horn.


Scott was a 1989 graduate of Wellsville High School. He joined the  U. S. Air Force in1990 and served all over the world. He achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant and was discharged in 2010. He was formerly employed as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Government Department of Homeland Security. He was a member of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion in Wellsville.

He is survived by his father,  Edward D.(Susan) Horn of Belmont, two sisters, Sherry (Donald) Horan and Tracy (Bradley) White, both of Wellsville, four nieces, Brittney and Brianna Horan and “Lexi” and Jada White, one step brother, Thomas (Jessica) Dayton of Jamestown as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and many long time friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Charlotte “Penny” Horn in 1996.

Friends are invited to a graveside service with military honors, on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 11:00 am in Woodlawn Cemetery, 276 S. Main Street in Wellsville. John L. Baldwin


 Richburg, NY - John L. Baldwin, 68, of 109 Ackerman Street passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Buffalo Veterans Hospital with his loved ones at his side. He was born January 25, 1946 in Bradford, PA the son of the late Archie and Ethel (Walters) Baldwin. On June 2, 2001 in Wellsville he married Nancy Baumgarten who survives.

 
John was raised in the Cuba area and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968 and served in Vietnam with CoE 2nd Battalion 1st Marine Division. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and two Purple Hearts. He was a life member and Past Commander of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion, he was the first Vietnam veteran to serve as Commander of the Allegany County American Legion, he was a life member of the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW, a member of the Amvets Post #1in Cuba and was a member of the 40 and 8.
 
He was first employed at Acme Electric in Cuba and was a dairy farmer. He then began his career with Dresser-Rand Corporation, first in Olean and for 27 years in Wellsville; retiring in 2005. He was a 35 year member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local Lodge 1580. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing golf and spending time with his family and friends.
 
Surviving in addition to his wife are six children, Mindy (Eric) Hooper of Farmersville, Amanda (George) Wagner of Tonawanda, Nick (Danielle) Baldwin of Little Genesee, Lee (Kevin) Green and Heidi (Lee) Sadler both of Friendship and Jody Baldwin of Denver, CO, 13 grandchildren, six great Grandchildren, a brother, Don Baldwin of Cuba, a sister, Margie Cadle of Rushford as well as several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a sister, Shirley Baldwin.

Margaret Rose “Maggie” McNinch

Belmont, NY - Margaret Rose “Maggie” McNinch, 76, of 21 Trianna Street passed away on Monday, August 25, 2014 at home with her family at her side. She was born May 23, 1938 in Sebring, Florida the daughter of the late Ernest R. and Rose (Lynn) Wilson. On April 19, 1957 she married Joseph Mead Sr. On January 29, 1977 she married Harry T. McNinch Jr. who predeceased her on January 20, 1995.

Maggie was raised in Orlando, Florida and was a graduate of Edgewater High School. She was the owner and operator of the Angle Inn RV Park in Hobe Sound, Florida. She was an active member of the Belmont United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for high school students, a youth group leader and was a member of the Board of Trustees. She was the secretary for the Belmont Betterment Association, a founding member and EMT of the Amity Rescue Squad, a member of the Camelot Coraliers, a former den mother, a matron for the Allegany County Jail and a day care provider.

She is survived by two sons, Dwayne “Pete” Mead of Belmont and Michael (Gaye Lea) Mead of Apopka, FL, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, four stepsons, Eugene (Karen) McNinch, Richard (Barbara) McNinch, John McNinch and Harry (Debra) McNinch, one stepdaughter, Laura McNinch, 16 step grandchildren and13 step great grandchildren and a very special friend, Ellen McNinch.She was predeceased in addition to parents and husband by a son, Joseph Mead Jr.

Friends are invited to call on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Belmont United Methodist Church on Park Circle. Eleanor W. Dates

Wellsville, NY - Eleanor W. Dates, age 91, formerly of O'Connor Street passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014, at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. She was born on February 7, 1923 in Salamanca to Howard" Hop" and Florence Holbrook Whitmore. On May 17, 1943 in Little Valley she married William L. Dates who predeceased her on March 29, 1982.

Eleanor had worked for Cattaraugus Cutlery, Southern Tier Abstract in Little Valley and during World War II she worked for Curtis Wright in Buffalo. She was a Cub Scout Leader, a Brownie Leader and had worked at the Girl Scout Day Camp during the summer. Eleanor's memberships include the Wellsville Fireman's Auxiliary and the Ever Green Twig where she volunteered at Jones Memorial Hospital for many years. She attended the Christian Temple Church in Wellsville and enjoyed traveling on many cruises and senior citizen trips.

Eleanor is survived by her son Ronald [Penelope] Dates of Memphis, NY.; a son in law Ronald [Mel] Meyer of Scio; 4 grandchildren Kimberly [Charles] Lynch of Garner, NC., Karen [Brad] Rich of Raleigh, NC., Amy Jo [Kevin] Unger of Leesport, PA. and Darren Meyer of Rochester; 2 step grandchildren Steven [ShuJin] Rankin of Brooklyn and Karen Rankin of Fountain, CO.; 10 great grandchildren.

Eleanor was predeceased by a daughter Constance Ray Meyer.

Eva M. "Peg" Howard

Wellsville, NY - Eva M. "Peg" Howard, age 62, of 152 Pine Street passed away at home on Thursday, August 14 2014, after a lengthy illness. She was born on June 10, 1952 in Cuba and was the daughter of the late Lloyd E. and Eva I. Morton Howard.

Peg had attended Scio Central School. She then worked for the Giant Food Mart as a meat cutter for over 30 years and was a part time bartender for P Js Pub both of Wellsville. Peg had been a member of the Lutheran Church, the VFW, the Moose and the American Legion all of Wellsville. She enjoyed cross word puzzles, circle a word and collecting frogs.

Surviving Peg are a brother Everett E. (Clara) Howard of Scio; 3 sisters Cheryl A. Fleming of Olean, Sonya K. Morris of Scio and Connie M. Howells of Friendship; an aunt Ruth Hurd of Richburg; several nieces and nephews; her family and friends, her dear friends at Gardner Heights and her special friend Elizabeth.

She was predeceased by 2 brothers Richard A. and Roy W. Howard.

Louis E. Hurd


Belmont, NY- Louis E. Hurd, 66, of 25 Willard Street passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at home surrounded by his family, following a brief illness. He was born July 22, 1948 in Wellsville the son of the late Albert D. and Nina (Goodwell) Hurd. On August 13, 2011 in Belmont he married Jane Scott who survives.


Lou was a 1966 graduate of Scio High School. He was veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Viet Nam from 1968 to 1969, with C Battery-6th-Battalion-33rd Artillery and achieved the rank of Specialist 5th Class. He was formerly employed at Dresser-Rand in Wellsville from 1969 to 1971, Air Preheater Company in Wellsville from 1971 to 1982 and General Manufacturing in Franklin Park, IL from 1983 to 1999; he retired in 2005.

He was a 13 year member of the Herbert Delong Post 808 American Legion in Belmont; and served as Commander from 2010 to the time of his death. He was elected 2nd Vice Commander of the Allegany County American Legion in 2012, 1st Vice Commander in 2013 and was serving as Commander at the time of this death. He was also a member of the 40 & 8. He was a loving husband, dad and grandfather, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and bowling.

Surviving in addition to his wife are seven children, Jerome (Andrea) Hurd of Painesville, Ohio, Tammy (Robert) Schret of Dillonsville, FL, Terrina “Terri” (Richard) Santiago of Aurora, IL, Gary Brownell Jr. of Pennsylvania, Brent (Michele) Platt Jr. of Belmont, Alisha (Tony) Sands of Belmont, and Tracy (Jeremy) Ledis of Boston, MA, 18 grandchildren, three sisters, Lois Stephens of Alma, Linda Klemm of Patterson, CA and Loni (Norman) Gauthier of Grand Junction, MI, one brother (like no other) Gary (Cheryl) Meger of Lombard, IL as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Judy (Kiefer) Hurd on October 12, 2009 and two daughters, Sonya Hurd in 2011 and Monique Brownell in 2013.

Msg. Duane “Dish” Cornish



Wellsville, NY - Msg. Duane “Dish” Cornish US Army Ret., 86, of 33 Cameron Street passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2014 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born April 28, 1928 in Harrison Valley, PA the son of the late Lewis G. and Caroline E. (Nye) Cornish. On July 12, 1958 in Wellsville he married Dorothy Brown who survives.


Dish was a veteran of the US Army from 1946 to 1952 and served in Korea from 1950 to 1951. He also served in the US Army Reserves from 1972 to 1988. He was a 30 year employee of Air Preheater Company. After retirement he worked for Perlator, Southern Tier Limousine Service and was a Fire Code Inspector for BOCES.  He was 40 year member of the Duke Hose Company # 1, where he had served as Captain, President, Treasurer and Trustee. He was Chief of the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department from 1981 to 1983. He was a life member of the Morrison Hayes American Legion Post 702 and the 17th Infantry Regiment Association. He was also a member of the Korean War Veterans Association and the Trinity Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed the Scio Seniors Sunshine Club, Top to the Hill Camp Club, Pals Camping, Wellsville Grand Squares, Penny Promenaders, and Coffee with the boys at the fire hall.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Donita (Don) Linza of Wellsville and Kelly (Don) Clemons of Andover, four grandchildren, Michelle Denhoff, Donnie (Stephanie) Clemons, Jeremy (Amber) Clemons and Amy (James Burgess) Clemons, 11 great grandchildren, one sister, Lorraine (Jim) Spowart of Howe, TX as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by his brother, Franklin Cornish.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, (August 12, 2014) from 10:00 am to 12 noon and from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church 470 N. Main Street in Wellsville. Louis A. Sentner Jr.

Wellsville, NY - Louis A. Sentner Jr., 82, 4192A Bolivar Road passed away on Wednesday, August 06, 2014 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born August 11, 1931 in Wellsville the son of the late Louis A. and Mildred (Blanchard) Sentner Sr. On June 15, 1957 in Wellsville he married Allyne Reynolds who predeceased him on August 3, 2005.

Louie attended school in Wellsville and was employed in the maintenance department of Jones Memorial Hospital for 42 years; retiring on August 12, 1993. He joined the Emerald Hook & Ladder Company # 3 on July 18, 1956 and served as president in 1963 and 1964. He was an active member of the Fire Police, the Allegany County Volunteer Fireman’s Association, the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Fireman and the Immaculate Conception Church. He was awarded the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Fireman, Fireman of the Year/Runner Up on August 5, 2005.

He is survived by a son, Dennis C. Sentner of Grand Canyon, AZ, a sister, Thresa Fortner of Chambersburg, PA, and a nephew, Brian Fortner. He was predeceased in addition to his wife by a daughter-in-law, Judy Sentner and a nephew, Mark Fortner.

Katherine Ann “Kat” Dickerson

Ooltewah, Tennessee - Katherine Ann “Kat” Dickerson, 71, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at her home in Ooltewah from congestive heart failure. She was born on June 17, 1943 the daughter of Maurice and Sara (Cleveland) Stephens. She was raised in Allentown, attended Allentown Union School and was a 1960 graduate of Bolivar High School. 

She is survived by her husband David Dickerson formerly of Alma, three sons, Michael (Sue) Dickerson of Southaven, MS, Barry (Vicki) Dickerson of West Henrietta, David Maurice Dickerson of Macon, MO, and a daughter Lynne (Calvin) Pollock of Ooltewah, TN, three sisters, Mary Ehrman of Batavia, Nancy (Jim) Jarmuz of Wellsville and Susan (Art) Reinking of York, SC, 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren as well as several nieces & nephews. 

A memorial service is being planned and will be announced at a later date. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society

Louise M. O'Conner

Wellsville, NY - Louise M. O'Connor ,age 91, of the Bolivar Road passed away on Friday August 1, 2014 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born on October 14, 1922 in Colesburg, Pennsylvania to Frank and Phoebe Dwight Palmatier. On August 2, 1941 in Wellsville she married William F. O'Connor Jr. who predeceased her on October 19, 1989.

Louise, known to her family as Weezie, had worked for the former Keyser Glove Factory in Wellsville later for the Marion-Rhor Company in Hornell. She was a long time member of the Immaculate Conception Church who enjoyed reading and jigsaw puzzles. Later in her life she had the opportunity to spend more time with her family and became close friends wither sister in law Eileen Palmatier. Weezie lived a full life and will be remembered for being cheerful, having a quick wit, easy going, a sense of humor and whose company everyone enjoyed.

Survivors include 3 grandchildren, William, Michael and Theresa; 4 great grandchildren; a sister in law Eileen Palmatier; several nieces and nephews.

Louise was predeceased by a son William F. O'Connor III; a sister, Virginia Washburn; 5 brothers, Caleb, Noel, Gilbert, Donald and Frank Palmatier

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, August 6, from 9 am to 10:30 am at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A prayer service will be held at 10:30 am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 am in the Immaculate Conception Church of Wellsville.
