Shongo, NY - Robert D. Hughes, 89, of 470 State Route 19 South passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bath following a long illness. He was born July 29, 1921 in Genesee, PA the son of the late Fred and Celia (Riley) Hughes.
He was a veteran of the U. S. Army during WWII in the European Theater of Operation. He served with Company "C" 318th Infantry 80th Division and participated in the Normandy Campaign. He was wounded in France and was awarded the Purple Heart in August of 1944. He was employed as an over the road truck driver from 1955 to 1960 and from 1961 to 1973 he owned and operated Hughes Septic Tank Service. He was a life member of the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW in Wellsville and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed photography, trading cars and trucks and helping people in his community with car repairs. Bob will be fondly remembered by his friends and family in the Shongo and Wellsville area.
He is survived by a son, David Hughes of Shongo, four grandchildren, Steven Hughes, Sonva Hughes Larsen and Amber Hughes all of Long Beach, CA, and James Hughes II of San Pedro, CA and one great-granddaughter, Stella Larsen of Long Beach, CA. He was predeceased by his former wife Helen Francis Hughes, and a son James Hughes I.
Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Wednesday from 11:00 to 1:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will follow visitation on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with Rev. Joseph Dougherty presiding. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Kinney, PA. Memorial donations are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans.
