Daniel P. Dolan

Wellsville, NY - Daniel P. Dolan, age 64, of East Fassett Street passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017, at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 10, 1953 in Wellsville to Robert and Madalene Merry Dolan.

Dan graduated from Scio Central High School, SUNY Geneseo with a B.S. in Biology, and from Paul Smith College with an A.A.S. in Forestry/ Surveying. He was a long time resident of the Wellsville /Scio Area who was a surveyor for Mark Wells Surveying in Hinsdale. Dan loved all aspects of the outdoors including hunting, fishing, and woodcarving. Dan was a Ham Radio Operator with a general license with a call sign of N2PDY. He was a member of the American Radio Relay League, St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Scio, and had attended the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.

Survivors include 2 brothers, Robert (Barbara) Dolan of Mt. Pleasant, PA., and John (Mary Beth Sootheran) Dolan of Wellsville; 2 sisters, Madalene Adele (Robert) Black of Wheatfield, and Mary (Gary) Dunham of Howard; 3 nieces and 2 nephews; several grand nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dan was predeceased by his parents, John and Madalene.

Shauna M. Brent

Belmont, NY - Shauna M. Brent, age 28, of County Route 48 passed away at home after a short illness. She was born on March 13, 1988 in Olean to Paul and Marjorie Schoonover Brent Sr.

Shauna graduated from Olean High School and had worked for PWI in Wellsville. She enjoyed spending time at the Highland Day Services and enjoyed animals especially her mother’s dogs. She will be remembered as a very social person who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her Father Paul of Smyrna, TN.; her mother Marjorie of Belmont; 3 brothers, Paul (Becca) Brent Jr. of Akron, Lewis (Tammy) Brent of Friendship, and John Outman of Friendship; a sister, Emma (Eric) McDowell of Wellsville; 3 nieces, 2 nephews; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Shauna was predeceased by a sister, DeeDee Brent; paternal grandparents, Henry and Emma Brent; maternal grandparents, Lewis and Doris Schoonover.

James Alfred Brush

Wellsville, NY - James Alfred Brush, 79, of 91 Jefferson Street, Wellsville NY passed away Sunday February 19 at Strong Memorial Hospital.  He was born January 1, 1938 in Hornell, New York, the son of H. Alfred and Catherine (Donovan) Brush. On June 9th, 1962 he married Julia Hart at Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, New York.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard, his brothers-in-law, Gerald and William Hart, sisters-in-law Jean Hart Hanks, Esther Hart Adams, and Mary Ellen Hart.  He is survived by his wife Julia, son Kevin (Amy) Brush, daughter Mary Elizabeth Brush, brother Thomas (Agnes) Brush, brother-in-law Clinton Adams, two grandchildren Matthew and Jeffrey Brush, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins and lifelong friends. 

Jim was raised in Canisteo, New York and moved to Scio, New York when he entered high school.  Jim participated in soccer, baseball, and basketball for Hall of Fame coach Roger Rigby before graduating in 1956. In 1960, he graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a degree in Business Administration, and forevermore bleeding brown and white.  He held season tickets to Bonaventure basketball for 50 years. After graduation, he briefly worked at Acme Electric before enlisting in the Army Reserves in 1960, reporting to Fort Dix and becoming active during that time.   He remained a member of the Army Reserve until 1966 as a member of the 98th Training Division. 

In 1963 his career moved in a new direction as he began work in the accounting department at Air Preheater in Wellsville, New York until his retirement in 2000, maintaining many lifelong friendships. 

Jim loved athletics.  He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Wellsville Country Club, serving as club president in 1982.  He served many years at WCC as Mens’ Golf Association treasurer. Upon stepping down from that post, he was honored with a bench dedicated to his service to the club.  He proudly claimed three holes-in-one to his credit.  

Many in Allegany County will remember Jim as a referee and was a member of IAABO Board 50 from 1963 to 2000.  He was the longtime secretary-treasurer and interpreter for the Board.  In 1981 he officiated in the New York State Basketball Finals. In 2009 he was elected to the Allegany County Sports Hall of Fame.  His coaching career began in 1963 when he was the volunteer basketball coach at Immaculate Conception School.  Additionally, he taught phys. ed. classes at ICS on his lunch hour.  This initial coaching tenure spanned 19 years.  When he stepped down from coaching the boys’ team, he coached the girls’ team for one year and then continued to help by officiating, scheduling, and assigning officials.  Then, after his retirement from Air Preheater he resumed coaching until 2012.  Though he retired from coaching, he was a visible presence at ICS running the clock, organizing fundraisers to sustain the program, and offering individual help to anyone who asked.  

Jim was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, where he served as an usher.  He was a former member of the Lions Club and an active member of Elks Lodge 1495, American Legion Post 702, a charter member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Wellsville and volunteered for many years with the local Special Olympics. Jim also enjoyed many good times with the ‘ABB Lunch Club’ and ‘Secret Club’. He enjoyed socializing and could be found most mornings at the Mini Mart drinking coffee, chatting and reviewing sports scores, with particular attention given to his beloved Buffalo Bills and Bonaventure Bonnies.

After his retirement, he and Judy found immense joy in providing care to his two beloved grandsons, taking them on ‘adventures’ to parks,  museums, historical sites, all the while teaching them family history along the way.  

On Friday February 24th at 2:30 pm the Rosary will be recited and visitation hours will follow at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville from 3pm to 7pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, NY on Saturday February 25th at 11:00 am, immediately followed by burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville, NY.  The family would like to invite Jim’s former basketball players to stand honor guard outside the church to welcome Jim home.

Barbara A. “Toots” “Babs” Shelley

Andover, NY - Barbara A. “Toots” “Babs” Shelley, age 76, of 511 Route 417 passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at home surrounded by her family. She was born on January 26, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA. She is survived by her husband of 17 years David Kemmer Sr.

Barbara was a former resident of Maryland who retired from Merry Maids in 2000 and moved to Andover in 2002. She had been a member of the VFW Post 2530 Woman’s Auxiliary, The America Legion Post 702 Auxiliary and  Woman of the Moose all of Wellsville. Barbara enjoyed time with her family, especially around a bon fire, and playing Criminal Case on her smart phone.

Survivors include 6 daughters, Debbie (John) Linkous, Lauranne (Stephen) Victor, Freda Cavallaro (Becky Spencer), Toni Vogel, Barbara Cavallaro, Kathleen (Rick (Whitesell; a son, Robert (Jennifer) Roach Jr.; step children, David (Debbie) Kemmer Jr., Pam (Mike) Jenkins, and Patty Kemmer; a daughter in law, Karen Roach; a brother, Chip (Sandy) Milner, a sister in-law, Jeanne Wolf Kemmer; a brother in-law Roy (Joanne) Kemmer; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, a great grandson;  several nieces and nephews.

Barbara was predeceased by 2 brother in-laws; 2 sister in-laws; a sister; 2 grandchildren.

Rose Marie Davis

Belmont, NY - Rose Marie Davis, age 61, of State Route 19 passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at home. She was born on February 15, 1956 in Wellsville to James and Alice Brewer Davis.

Rose graduated from Wellsville High School as a member the Class of 1974. She had been a long time Belmont resident who had been an EMT with the Amity Rescue Squad. In her mid-30’s Rose obtained her LPN license and had worked at Jones Memorial Hospital, Highland Park Rehabilitation Center, ARC on Dyke Street, and last she worked at Wellsville Manor Care Center. Rose was an artist who enjoyed all arts and crafts. She will be remembered for her painting including store fronts and especially lawn decorations. Rose enjoyed cooking especially for her family. She will be remembered to many as an unselfish woman that made sure others were taken care of.

Survivors include 3 sons, Jim (Amanda) Baker, Phillip (Chrissy) Baker, and Leland Baker; 3 daughters, Christina (Chad) Allen, Stephanie (Alyn) MacDonell, and Alisha (William) La Forge; a proud grandmother to 19, Jimmy, Trevor, Raymond, Julie, Destiny, Dalton, Breanna, Stephanie, Austin, Jonathan, Makala, Kira, Kaleigh, Aidan, Alex, Phil, Jordan, Merriam, and Stanley; a great grandson and two more great grandchildren on the way; a brother, Charles (Sandy) Davis; 4 sisters, Lucy (Dick) Pierce, Doris (Steve) Meitzler, Sara Moran, and Edith Coyne; her faithful and constant companion, Little Lady.

Rose was predeceased by her parents and her infant brother, James.

Sandra Lee Reynolds

Wellsville, NY - Sandra Lee Reynolds, age 72, of 340 South Main Street passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born in Buffalo on July 3, 1944 to Lester and Hazel Hibbard Reynolds.

Sandy graduated from Kenmore West High School in 1963. She was a care giver for her parents and in 2007 she moved to Wellsville to live in the Burns Family Care Home. Sandy was a private woman who enjoyed writing and a quiet life. She attended the Knights Creek Evangelical Church in Scio and had many friends at the Highland Day Care Service in Wellsville.

Sandy is survived by a brother, Harry (Carol) Reynolds of Wayland and her care givers, Joyce and Steve Burns.

Sandy was predeceased by her parents, her brother Richard and her sister Betty Sanford.

There will be no prior visitation and friends are invited to a memorial service to be held at the Duke Hose Company on Stevens Street on Saturday February 25, 2017 at 1 pm. Frank Earl Cady


FRANK CADY - LEGENDARY EDUCATOR, LEADER, COACH, AND LIFE-LONG MENTOR PASSES 


WELLSVILLE, NY – Frank Earl Cady, 82 of 93 Jefferson Street, passed away Monday morning (Feb13, 2017) at the Hart Comfort House in Wellsville.


He was born on April 30, 1934 in Wellsville the son of the late Earl Forest and Pearl (Babcock) Cady of Allentown.  On June 21, 1958 he married Joan Marie McGuirl at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Scio, NY.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his older sister, Sweetie Cady, in 1939. 
Frank was raised in Allentown, NY. He was a graduate of Allentown Union Free School and St. Bonaventure University, having earned both his Bachelor and Masters Degrees there. Following a two-year tour in the US Army, he began a nearly four-decade long career in education.  He was a History, Latin, and English teacher from 1957-1984, serving two years at Friendship Central School, three years at Scio Central School and the remaining years at Wellsville Central School. He then became assistant principal of Wellsville High School and principal in 1986, retiring in June 1991.

Frank was a life-long accomplished athlete and coach in multiple sports, having ultimately been inducted into both the Allegany County Athletic Association and Wellsville Sports Halls of Fame. 

His athletic accomplishments started in high school where he earned varsity letters in five sports and was high scorer on the undefeated Allentown “Whiz Kids” basketball team, scoring 48 points against then Roger Rigby’s Scio Tigers. He vigorously competed in baseball, softball, and tennis throughout his adult life capturing countless team and individual awards along the way including, but not limited to: a Fort Dix Tennis Doubles championship; a St. Bonaventure Tennis Doubles championship; a St. Bonaventure Alumni singles championship; a St. Bonaventure Mixed Doubles championship; a Times Herald Men’s 45 Singles championship; and, both the USTF’s Florida State “60-plus” and “70-plus” doubles championships from his winter home at The Landings in Fort Myers, Florida.

Frank’s most noteworthy coaching accomplishments while Coach of the WHS Girls’ Varsity Softball team included: seven Section V championships in nine years; a NYS record of 58 consecutive wins - including the 1994 Azalea Championship; and, 7 Expressway Conference titles – including a streak of 41 consecutive wins. Several of his lady Fast Pitch athletes went on to the collegiate level including: 5 at Division I; 2 at Division II; and, 3 who earned Collegiate All-American status. 

Frank inspired community enthusiasm for WHS sports while coaching tennis, basketball and softball at all levels throughout his career.  In addition, he became a famous radio personality, conducting weekly broadcasts of local games at various levels of competition. The capstone of his sports career came when the Big 30 “Coach of the Year Award” was permanently named after Coach Cady.

Frank Cady was one of Allegany County’s most legendary citizens having served so unselfishly throughout his life as a teacher, coach, administrator, mentor and devout loyal friend to students, peers, friends, and above all, family. He loved playing cards, traveling, holiday celebrations with family and his daily “coffee clutch” at Dunkin Donuts.

His loving family includes not only his wife Joan, of 58 years, but also three children, Michael Earl (Carol) Cady, grandson’s Luke and Eli; Sheila Anne (Anthony, Jr.) Delmonte, granddaughter Abbigail, and grandson Dominick; Julie Anne (Dr. Douglas) Cady-Reh, granddaughters Isabel and Laney, and grandson Sam; and 12 nephews and 11 nieces. He loved his family with a vigor unlike any other.

On Sunday, March 5, 2017 beginning at 1:00 pm friends and family are invited to gather at the Wellsville High School Auditorium. A "Celebration of Life Service" will begin at 2:15 pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, NY. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Belmont.

Nellie Ann Hebert

Franklinville, NY - Nellie Ann Hebert, age 75, of 8703 Route 16 passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Olean General Hospital. She was born on November 15, 1941 in Olean to Raymond and Lanora Fanton Geer. Nellie Ann married Douglas Meeboer Sr. who predeceased her and later she married Russell Hebert who also predeceased her.

Nellie Ann was a long time resident of Franklinville who at one time was an EMT in Flint, Michigan. She enjoyed crafts and loved animals.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ellen Porter of Tampa, Florida; a son, Douglas Meeboer Jr. of Franklinville; a granddaughter, Ashley Porter of Tampa, Florida; 3 brothers, Elwin (Elsie) Geer of Rexville, Ronald (Billie Jo) Geer of Sumterville, Florida, and Carl Geer of Sumterville, Florida; several nieces and nephews.

Nellie Ann was predeceased by her two husbands.

George J. McNulty Jr,



Wellsville, NY - George J. McNulty Jr, 83, of 3276 First Street died on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Hart Comfort House surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 28, 1933 in Chicago, IL the son of the late George and Helen (Dennis) McNulty Sr. On July 27, 1957 in Wellsville he married Judith Kohsiek who survives.


George’s family moved to Wellsville when he was five. He attended the Immaculate Conception School, Wellsville High School and received an associate degree from Alfred State College. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He was employed at Worthington/Turbodine/Dresser-Rand for 46 years, retiring in 1998. He was a life member and Past Commander of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion, Past County Commander of the American Legion and was a member of the 40 & 8. He was a coach for the Wellsville Little League, the Legion Junior Baseball League and enjoyed playing golf,

He is survived in addition to his wife of 60 years, by two sons, Robert and his wife Robin and Michael and his wife Pamela, two daughters, Theresa and Christine, three grandsons, Michael, Kenneth and Shawn, and his wife Katrina, two granddaughter, Ashley and her husband Knox, and Kendre, and four great grandchildren.

Doris C. Mallory

Wellsville, NY - Doris C. Mallory, age 92, of Florida Avenue passed away on Monday, February 13, 2107, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born on April 3, 1924 in Allentown to Lloyd and Margaret Link Swarthout. On November 3rd, 1946 in the First Trinity Lutheran Church she married Floyd Mallory who predeceased her on June 22, 2016.

Doris was the Valedictorian of Allentown High School class of 1941. She had been employed as a draftsman at Air Preheater and later earned her LPN and worked at Jones Memorial Hospital. Doris enjoyed bowling, cooking, walking, as well as crafts that include sewing, and knitting. She was a member of TOPS and the Trinity Lutheran Church where she enjoyed Bible Breakfast, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Ladies Aid Society.

Survivors include 2 sons, Glenn (Debra) Mallory of Grand Junction, CO. and Roger (Patricia George) Mallory of Wellsville; 2 daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Stallworth of Mumford and Mary Alice (Kelly) Monroe of Wellsville; 4 grandchildren, Joshua Stallworth, Terrence Monroe, Matthew Monroe, and Christine (John) Ressler. A brother, James Swarthout of Old Orchard, Maine. Doris was predeceased by her parents, her husband and her sister, June Gensamer.

Barbara J. Rushmore

Wellsville, NY - Barbara J. Rushmore, age 77, of East Hanover Street passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born on May 12, 1939 in Vestal to Ernest and Alfaretta Ellis Brooker. Barbara was married to Clifford G. Carl and in 1989 she married Wallace Rushmore who predeceased her in 2005.

Barbara worked for the Vulcan Corporation making shoes in Johnson City. She then moved to Wellsville and was a cook in many area restaurants including the Wagon Wheel, Johnny’s Diner, and the Brass Balloon. Barbara was a life member of the VFW Post 2530 Women’s Auxiliary of Wellsville. She served as Post 2530 Women’s Auxiliary President, District President and New York State President. Barbara enjoyed cooking, bowling, bingo and she loved animals.

She is survived by her children, Judy (Dave) Mitchell of Shinglehouse, PA., Caryn (Brad) Shaver of Sandusky, OH., Douglas (Theresa) Carl of Wellsville, Brian (Della) Carl of Wellsville, Donald Carl of Wellsville, Jeff (Nicol) Carl of Wellsville; her step children, Gregory Rushmore of Colorado and Sherry Clark of Wellsville; 19 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; a brother, Ernest (Carol) Brooker of Endicott.

She was predeceased by her two husbands, a great grandson, Dylon Mitchell, and a great granddaughter, Erin Lorshbough. She was also predeceased by her brothr Bob Brooker.

Richard Jack Sekoll

Wellsville, NY - Richard Jack Sekoll, age 79, of 1768 Stannards Road passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Highland Park Health Care Center. He was born on September 15, 1937 in Willing to John H. and Frances E. Sekoll. On July 24, 1982 in the Whitesville Methodist Church he married Jessie Rose Maidment Edwards who survives.

Dick graduated from Wellsville High School in 1957 where he was active in the FFA. He was a lifelong farmer on his family’s homestead and was a member of the Grange. Dick enjoyed trips to Newfoundland with Jessie where the loved to fish and hunt moose.

Survivors include his wife Jessie, a stepson, Mike Edwards of Whitesville; a step daughter, Tracie Edwards of Bolivar; grandchildren, Jeremy Hunt of Austin, TX., Seth Edwards of Rexville, Magin Edwards of Wellsville, Emily Edwards of Wellsville, Dylon Edwards of Whitesville, Jessica Edwards of Shinglehouse, PA., and Christopher Strope of Wellsville; many great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ferd Sekoll and Carl Sekoll both of Greenwood and a sister, Ada Cavagna of Shongo; several nieces and nephews. Also surviving was a special lady, his God Daughter, Theresa (Doug) Carl.

Dick was predeceased by his parents, a brother, John Sekoll; a sister, Marguerite Maxwell; a stepson, Charlie Edwards.

Charles E. Booth

Wellsville, NY - Charles E. Booth, age 77, of Howard Street passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2017, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born on August 19, 1939 in New Kensington, Pennsylvania to Jess and Mabel Grabigel Booth.

Chuck was a machinist while serving in the U. S. Navy. He settled in California and worked as a machinist for Richard Maddock who he followed to Wellsville. Chuck eventually became the owner of the shop and worked for himself on the Hawks Road. He was a caring and loving gentleman who cared deeply for his family and friends. Chuck enjoyed bowling, fishing and golfing at Serenity Hills Golf Course in Friendship.

Chuck is survived by a son, Charles Booth Jr. of Springhill, FL.; a brother, Robert Booth of Shelocta, PA.; 2 sisters, Val Jean Koskie of Monroe and JoAnne Shuster of Tucson, AZ.; several nieces and nephews.

Chuck was predeceased by his wife Sandra, his parents, and a brother Richard Colin.

Shawntelle Marie Santas

Wellsville, NY - Our community is full of broken hearts as we say goodbye to an incredible woman who played a supportive role in the lives of so many. Shawntelle Marie Santas, 48, of Wellsville, passed away February 5th after a strong battle with uterine sarcoma. She went peacefully, surrounded by dozens of her family and friends. Shawn was born to Leonard Kalkbrenner and the late Janet Kalkbrenner. In addition to her father, she is survived by her stepmother Lynda; her three younger siblings: Sheila, Sherry, and Lenny; her loving husband, J. Andrew; her four adoring children: Jared, Jaguar, Justin, and Sheyenne; and her two charming grandbabies. 

Shawn spent her time helping others both in her professional life at Trapping Brook House, and in her personal life. Born to be a mother, she became one for more than just her four, taking in others as her own and giving them a loving second family to rely on. In much of her spare time, she wrote beautifully sarcastic pieces about her family and her journey. In lieu of flowers and cards, the family requests that donations be made in her name to one of her favorite places, the David A. Howe Public Library. 

For any wishing to celebrate her life, there will be a gathering at the Wellsville Creative Arts Center on Friday, February 10th from 6-8 PM. Food and refreshments will be available as well as a stage to share our most valued memories and extend support to one another. Shawn will live on in all of those she has touched throughout her life.

Eileen Ardell “Pat” Palmatier

Wellsville, NY - Eileen Ardell “Pat” Palmatier, 98, of 4192B Bolivar Road died on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. She was born January 25, 1919 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Levi B. and Susan Emily (Cunningham) Ellis. On September 5, 1943 in Louisiana she married Donald Palmatier who predeceased her on June 23, 2003.

Pat was a 1937 graduate of Wellsville High School, where she played basketball and softball. She was a long time resident of Field Street in Wellsville prior to moving to Manor Hills.
She was first employed at Reuning Bakery in Wellsville and during WW II she worked at Bell Aircraft in Buffalo. She also worked at the Airport Holiday Inn in Buffalo and later she retired from the housekeeping department of Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville after 16 years.

She was a member of the Ladies Home Bureau and the VFW Auxiliary. She was an avid bowler, seamstress and Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed playing cards. She loved sports, puzzles, games and playing by the rules, at least when people were paying attention. Whenever the mood hit, she enjoyed singing, dancing and whistling. She had a legendary whistle that could be heard throughout the neighborhood; which meant, “Get home”! Through life’s up and downs, she always kept up her courage and has been an inspiration to all. 

She is survived by one daughter, Susan (Dale) Zanders of Wellsville, seven grandchildren, Debbie Wright, Steve Burrell, Mike Burrell, Wayne Palmatier, David Palmatier, Marty Reese and Jessica Moerler, 15 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, a son-in-law, Gerald Reese, several nieces and nephews and she will be missed by her many special friends at Manor Hills. She was predeceased by two children, Dana Palmatier and Jo Ann Palmatier, one granddaughter, Dawn Farrell, two brothers, Richard Ellis and George “Ed” Ellis, two sisters, Nellie “Leonette” Gorton and Emily “Deorwyn” Forgarty and a sister-in-law, Louise O’Connor. 

A memorial service is being planned for March and the date and time will announced. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Please consider memorial donation to the Hart Comfort House

Beverly J. Dixon

Wellsville, NY - Beverly J. Dixon, 72, of 3456 Baldwin Road died on Friday February 3, 2017 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born July 23, 1944 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Donald and Arletta (Hall) Dixon.

Beverly was a 1963 graduate of the Wellsville High School. She began her career at Super Duper and later at Loblaws until it closed. She then worked for her mother and great aunt at Sarge’s Sub Shop on South Main Street in Wellsville. Beverly, her mother, and sister then started Dixon’s Sub Shop in Olean, which later moved to West Fassett Street in Wellsville until it closed in 1979. She then started a 20 year career at Jones Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1999. During those years she also cleaned the offices of Doctor Sale and Doctor Graham in Wellsville and Doctor Coch and Doctor Ogden in Andover. In 1999 she started Dixon’s Sub Shop on the Bolivar Road in Wellsville, until it closed in 2005. She then was employed Save-A-Lot and the Wellsville Elementary School as a lunch monitor, where she enjoyed the children very much.

Beverly enjoyed baking hundreds of dozens of cookies, wedding cakes and all sorts of goodies over the years. She also enjoyed spending time with her family both in Wellsville and Clearfield, PA.

She is survived by a brother, David (Peggy) Dixon of Wellsville, a nephew, Joshua Dixon, a niece, Jasmine Dixon, a great niece, Aleeya Billings, several aunts, uncles, cousins and her beloved Boston Terrier, Jo-Jo. She was predeceased in addition to her parents by a sister, Colleen D. Dixon on June 1, 2014.

A private service is being planned for a later date. Burial will be with her parents and sister in Woodlawn Cemetery. Lillian M. Simons

Allentown, NY - Lillian M. Simons, 94, of 1931 Sheffield Street, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Highland Park Healthcare Center in Wellsville. She was born November 27, 1922 in the Town of Scio, the daughter of Benjamin and Stella (Sortore) Simons.

Lillian was a 1940 graduate of Allentown Union High School and a 1943 graduate of the Two Year Bible School in Houghton. She was employed as the secretary at the Allentown Union High School for 14 years, she was the elementary secretary in Allentown for 21 years and at Scio Central School for five years, before retiring in 1985. She had served both school districts as a census enumerator. She was a committee member of the Allentown Alumni Association. For many years she was the chairman of the Door-to-Door Campaigns for the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society for the Allentown Area and later for the Town of Alma. She was a member of the Brookside Wesleyan Church where she was active with the children, youth and adult ministries. She volunteered at area nursing homes, including, Mary’s Nursing Home, Early Street Adult Care and for many years at the Highland Healthcare Center. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Allegany County Saturday Night Youth Rallies, which later became the present Southern Tier Youth for Christ.

She is survived by two nephews, James (Kay) Simons of Mason, MI and Daniel (Sandi) Simons of Evergreen, CO, four nieces, Judith (Neal) Frey of Longview, TX, Sharon (Brian) Stewart Albion, NY, Faith (Lee) Stewart of Cuba, NY, Ellyn (Paul) Sanna of Vestal, NY, as well as several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Raymond and Eleanor Simons and Rev. Eldyn and Elizabeth Simons, and one nephew, Philip Eldyn Simons. 

Friends are invited to call on Monday (February 6, 2017) from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville and on Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Brookside Wesleyan Church, Route 417 East in Wellsville. The funeral will follow visitation at 11:00 am Tuesday in church with Rev. Robin George presiding. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont.
