Jacqueline A. Merrick, 73

Belmont, NY – Jacqueline A. Merrick, 73, of Farr Road, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Strong Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. She was born September 11, 1951, in Warsaw, the daughter of Vinton and Jean (Yavicoli) Nourse. On August 26, 1972, in Arcade, she married Cyril “Skip” Merrick, who survives.

Jackie was a long-time resident of Belmont. She graduated from Arcade Central School. Shefound her career with Allegany County, starting in the County Clerk’s office in 1992. In 2003she became Assistant Director of the Veterans Services Agency, where she was passionate about helping Veterans and their families. She retired in 2015. In retirement she continued her community involvement as a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Genesee Valley Chorus, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 702, and supported Skip’s involvement with the Patriot Guard Riders. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends and was an avid Yankees and Buffalo Bills Fan (watching the Bills win over the Chiefs this past Sunday with her family). She had a deep love for animals, especially the numerous cats and dogs she loved over the years and took joy in watching and feeding the birds in her backyard. She led an active lifestyle, participating in aerobics and multiple 5Ks in retirement, but most of all she cherished her daily walks, often around Amity Lake with her dear friends. Above all she will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother.

In addition to her husband of 52 years, Skip, she is survived by: her mother, Jean Nourse of St. Paul, MN; children, David (Rosanna) Merrick of Cape Coral, Fl and Julie (Adam) Frolish of Warren, NJ; a grandson, Dominick Merrick of Cape Coral, FL; four brothers, Gregory (Marcie) Nourse, Gary (Angela) Nourse, Dennis (Micki) Nourse, and Mark (Nicky) Nourse; as well as several nieces and nephews and close friends. She was predeceased by her father, Vinton Nourse.

Wellsville, NY – Garrett W. Scott, 76, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center, Wellsville, NY.  Garrett was born May 24, 1948, in Olean, the son of the late Garrett Paul and Virginia (Vossler) Scott.

Daniel Hart, 46

Wellsville, NY – Daniel Hart, 46, of Hanover Hill Road, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Strong Memorial Hospital with family by his side. He was born September 12, 1978, in Wellsville, the son of Francis David and Lucille (Smith) Hart. 

Dan was raised in Wellsville and was a 1996 graduate of Wellsville High School. He continued his education at Alfred State College, earning his associates degree. He was formerly employed by Harts Meat Market, Dresser Rand as a machinist, and the in the Maintenance Department for Allegany County. 

He is survived by: his mother, Lucille; siblings, Eileen (Tim) Shea, Patrick (Julie) Hart, Kathryn (Patrick) Dempsey, John (Virginia) Hart, Sarah Swisher, and Josephine Hart and her husband Brent Bailey, all of Wellsville; brother-in-law, Craig (Nora) Burdick of Wellsville; life-long friend Eddie Gee of Wellsville; beloved dogs Doc and Tuco; as well as several niecesnephews, and cousins. Constance J. Mills, 86

Wellsville, NY – Constance J. Mills86, passed away on Sunday, November 17,2024, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center following a lingering illness. She was born May 5, 1938, in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Alfred G. and Zennia (Griswold) Allen. On Christmas Eve in 1955she married her husband of sixty-five yearsDavid “Red” Mills, who predeceased her August 2, 2021.

Connie was a stay-at-home mom, until she began her career with Peterson’s Drug Store, which eventually transitioned to Walgreens, from where she retired in 2005. She loved working in her flower garden, knitting, and reading Romance andMystery novels.

She is survived by a daughter, Debora M. (James) Richardson of Wellsville; a son, Dale C. (Kathy) Mills of Fort Edward; six grandchildren; four great-grandsons;one sister Ann Gee; two sisters-in-law, Dona Mills and Maureen Strauss; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Dennis A. Mills; two sistersErma Allen and Audrey (Elwood) Miller; and three brothers-in-law, Robert Gee, Robert Mills, and Douglas Strauss

Bruce C. Caldwell, 87

Belmont, NY – Bruce C. Caldwell, 87, of Maple Street, passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at St. James Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. He was born April 4, 1937, in Kane, PA, the son of the late Robert and Grace (Olinger) Caldwell. 

Bruce was raised in Belmont, graduating from Belmont Central School in 1955. He entered the workforce and was employed by Borden’s in Belmont, and Belmont BOCES, before finding his career at Worthington/Dresser-Rand Corporation, retiring in 2000. Together with his father, Robert Caldwell, Bruce owned and operated a TV sales and service business in Belmont and owned and operated two motion picture theaters, one in Belmont and one in Cuba NY.

Outside of his employment, he was a member of the Village Board for several years, was a volunteer firefighter – working his way to Fire Police, was an avid Buffalo Bills fan, and frequent supporter of high school sports (volunteering as score keeper for BCS basketball and umpire for BCS baseball). Additionally, he was a member of the American Legion Post 808 and a former member of the Belmont Presbyterian Church. 

He is survived by three siblings, Sarah Catherine (Phillip) Wesche and Bryan Marshall (Barbara) Caldwell, both of Belmont, and Darrell John (Mary) Caldwellof Russell, KY, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three siblings and their spouses, Robert C. (Marian) Caldwell Jr., Barbara Ann (Russell) Tompkins, and David William Caldwell.

Roy E. Costley, 67

Mills, PA – Roy E. Costley, 67, formerly of Marsh Creek Road, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, November 8, 2024, at UPMC Cole Hospital in Coudersport. He was born January 3, 1957, in Wellsville, the son of the late Howard and Hilda (Halsey) Costley. 

Roy was raised in Wellsville and was a 1976 graduate of Belmont High School. He continued his education at SUNY Corning, where he pursued his funeral directing license. Once licensed, he worked for some time in Corning at a Mortician, until he returned to Wellsville to focus on his health. Outside of his career, he liked to hunt, attended every church’s Chinese auction, loved his guitars, music, and movies. 

He is survived by: siblings, Howard (Bev) Costley of Connecticut and Clarence (Darla Sherwood) Miles of Wellsville; sister-in-law, Kay Costley of Florida; step-siblings; a special great-nephew, Denton Sherwood; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and stepfatherHilda and Jesse Reese, father, Howard Costley, and brother Roger Costley.

Lorena A. Condon, 95

Nashville, TN – Lorena A. Condon, 95, formerly of Wellsville, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at Trevecca Rehabilitation and Healingwith her family by her side. She was born June 22, 1929, in Alma, the daughter of the late Fred and Elvina (Chandler) Studer. On February 21, 1948, in Portville, she married Thomas Condon, who predeceased her April 24, 2002. 

Lorena was a life-long resident of the Willing area. She was a Wellsville High School graduate, and at the age of 40, she graduated from Nursing School in Hornell in 1970. After 24 years of nursing, she retired from Jones Memorial Hospital. Outside of her career, she was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Genesee and was active in their St. Agnes Guild. 

She is survived by: three sons, John (Linda Rucker) Condon of Nashville TN, Michael T. Condon of High View, WV, and Thomas (Elza) Condon Jr. of Brookfield, CT; grandchildren, Jen Fogg of Mt. Dora, FL, Jeff Condon of Des Moines, IA, Nicole Condon and Matt Condon both of Woodbridge, VA, and Christian Condon and Jessica Condon both of Brookfield, CT; six great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, and husband of 54 years, she was predeceased by: a grandson, Mike Condon; twosisters, Luella Amidon and Lauretta Birmingham; and three brothers, Leon Studer, Hubert Studer, and Paul Studer.

Anthony M. Grisewood, 59

Belmont, NY – Anthony M. Grisewood, 59, of Maple Street, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, in his home. He was born October 9, 1965, in Wellsville, the son of the late Mortimer A. “Mort” Jr. and Margaret “Jo” (Hosley) Grisewood

Tony was raised in Belmont and was a 1983 graduate of Belmont High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted with the United States Army and served from 1983 to 1985. He attended Alfred State College’s Wellsville Campus. He found his career at Dresser-Rand Corporation as an electrician, where he was well liked by his fellow employees, retiring when the Wellsville plant closed. Outside of his employment, he was a member of the Belmont American Legion Herbert DeLong Post 808, was a charter member of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 808 and was a former member of the Wellsville Moose Lodge 601. He loved to fish, bowl, play golf, garden, and adored his dogs. During his illness, Tony was lovingly cared for by his brothers, sisters, and life-long best friends Alan and Sherri Presutti. 

He is survived by two sons, a grandson, Mortimer A. Grisewood III; three sisters, Mary Janet (David) Robbins of Katy, TX, Frances Young of Belmont, and Kathleen Grisewood of Belmont; two brothers, John (Rebecca) Grisewood of Olean and Daniel Grisewood of Olean; and several beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Kevin Young.

Wellsville, NY – Betty Lou Carolyn Prince, 79, of 80 Johnson Street, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2024, with her family at her side. She was born January 11, 1945, in Wellsville, the daughter of John and Margaret (Hillegas) Prince Sr.

Betty was raised in Wellsville, and was a 1964, graduate of St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo. While at St. Mary’s she worked in the kitchen. She was formerly employed as a sewing machine operator for Champion Products in Perry, NY, and later for Sylvania in Galeton, PAOver the years she taught Sign Language for Allegany-Steuben Arc. She enjoyed making craftsjigsaw puzzles, and Bingo

She is survived by three sisters, Connie (Terry) Briggs of Wellsville, Charlotte Roberts of Batavia, and Jennie (Richard) Matteson of Clover, SC, as well as several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her parents by three brothers, Dale, Kevin and John Prince Jr., a sister, Darlene Mills, and two nephews.

V. Lucille Dickerson, 91

Wellsville, NY – V. Lucille Dickerson, 91, formerly of Belmont, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2024, peacefully at home, surrounded by her family. She was born September 25, 1933, in Alma, the daughter of the late George and Flossie (Terrette) Quick. On April 11, 1953, in Alma, she married Carl R. Dickerson, who predeceased her on March 1, 2014. 

Lucille and Carl owned and operated The Dickerson Rest Home, in Belmont, for 28 years. Additionally, she was a member, and former Sunday School Teacher, at the First Baptist Church of Belmont. 

She is survived by: a son, Warren (Kim) Dickerson of Toccoa, GA; two daughters, Ann (Alan) Cotèand Anita Johnson, both of Wellsville; 6 grandchildren15Great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, JoAnn Quick; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, and husband of 60 years, she was predeceased by: a granddaughter, Melissa Lynne Johnson; five sisters; a brother; and two sons-in-law, Steven Brown and Marc Johnson.

Philip Smith, 93

Wellsville, NY – Philip Smith, 93, of Howard Street, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Wellsville ManorHe was born on June 6, 1931, in Rochester, the son of the late Ruth Smith. On December 15, 1953, in Wellsville, he married the love of his life, Julia A. Nesbitt, who predeceased him on December 24, 2021. 

Phil was a life-long “Go getter” and managed through all the hardships life threw his way. He was raised in Corning, living with his grandparents. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. From 1948 – 1952. He served on the U.S.S. Salem for a year, until he was deployed to Korea and fought courageously during the Korean WarAfter his honorable discharge he was employed by Corning Glass before finding his career with the New York State Troopers, he was stationed in Syracuse, Franklinville, and Wellsville. He climbed the ranks to BCI Investigator, retiring in 1968. He was a life-long member of the NYS Troopers Association, serving as both secretary and president. Outside of his employment he was a member and organist for the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Having the gift of gab, he was able to start a conversation with anyone, he enjoyed attending the NYSTA dinners to catch up with old friends, playing piano for nursing homes, baking his famous chocolate chip cookies, making homemade pizza and lasagna, and sharing many stories with his kids, grandkids, and great grandkidsHe was a member of the Wellsville American Legion Post 702. 

He is survived by: five children, William (Joan) Smith of Hollywood, FL, Carol Behr of Wellsville, Michael (Marcy) Smith of Wellsville, Laura (Richard) Daniels of Wellsville, and Grace Smith of Wellsville; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildrenIn addition to his mother, and wife of 68 years, he was predeceased by an infant son, Daniel Eugene Smith and son-in-law, Gerald Behr.

Rhonda J. Congdon, 75

Wellsville, NY – Rhonda J. Congdon, 75, of North Franklin Street, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Maple City Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Hornell. She was born September 30, 1949, in Wellsboro, PA, the daughter of the late Elwin and Rosemarie (Knowlton) Kendrick. On June 12, 1971, in Elmira, NY, she married J. Michael Congdon, who predeceased her on January 29, 2010. 

Rhonda was raised in Elmira Heights and graduated from Edison High School. She earned her associate’s degree at Corning Community College. In 1981, she and Michael moved their family to Wellsville. She was active in the community as the Activities Director for Highland Park, additionally, she taught religious education at Immaculate Conception Church. She loved to play the piano, and she and Mike enjoyed camping at Kinzua. 

She is survived by: a daughter, Christine (Todd) Jeffers of Genesee, PA; a son, Timothy (Samantha) Congdon of Allegany; three grandchildren, Trevor (Jessica) Jeffers, Christopher Jeffers, and Michael Congdonthree great-grandchildren, Ava Jeffers, Mason Jeffers, and Michael Congdon Jr.; three sisters, Sharon Brill, LaVonne (Kim) Gilbert, and Vicki (Joe) Hudson; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann (George) Novotny; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, and husband of 38 years, she was predeceased by: a granddaughter, Cassandra Congdon.

Arthur W. Lovel, 95

Wellsville, NY – Arthur W. Lovel, 95, of Rauber Street, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at St. James Hospital in Hornell. He was born July 20, 1929, in Sabinsville, PA, the son of the late John Edwin Sr. and Viola Etta (Thompson) Lovell. On February 14, 1953, in Harrison Valley, PA, he married Loretta Mae Stone, who predeceased him on May 4, 2018. 

Art was raised in Harrison Valley and was a Harrison Valley High School graduate. From 1951 to 1953 he honorably served with the United States Army, during the Korean War. After his service, he continued his education at St. Bonaventure University, earning his bachelor’s degree in business. He found his career at Air Preheater for 32 years, retiring in 1986. Outside of his employment, he was a previous 50-year member of the Christian Temple, attended the United Methodist Church, and was a recent convert of Catholicism; he was also a member of the Wellsville Lions Club and VFW. With Loretta, he was an avid member of the Family Campers and RVers Organizations, including P.A.L.s, 39ers, and Top the Hill Chapters. He was a life-long history buff and would read any-and-everything to do with War History. 

He is survived by: three children, Connie M. Ramsey of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Curtis Arthur (Mary Lou) Lovel of Sebastian, FL, and Camille Lynne (Todd) Kenny of Fredericksburg, VA; six grandchildren, Christopher Ramsey, Kimberly (Nat) Wilson, Brian (Miranda) Ramsey, Derek (Stephanie) Lovel, Jordan (Brock) Eveland, Dustin (Emily) Kenny; eight great-grandchildren; cousins, Linda & Nyhl Austin of Wellsville; sister-in-law, Geraldine Wood nee Stone of Kossuth; companion Geraldine Bassney, and her family, of Tioga, PA; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, and wife of 65 years, he was predeceased by: his four siblings, Hazel Witaker, Almyra Lovel, John Lovel Jr., and Mary Barr.
