Gary L. Ells

Wellsville, NY - Gary L. Ells, age 67, passed away on Tuesday December 24, 2019 at the Wellsville Manor. He was born on April 27, 1952 in Hornell to  Lewis and Luella Sisson Ells.

Gary attended Alfred Almond Central School and lived the majority of his years in the Almond area. He had a brief career at Conrail as well as several area farms. He developed a great love for cars- he always enjoyed paging through the latest “motor-head” magazines, memorizing facts about all cars and collecting model cars. Regardless of the weather, Gary would not miss his morning coffee at his favorite local stops. Reluctantly he spent his last months at the Wellsville Manor Nursing Care facility, where he grew to enjoy bantering with the staff and residents.

Gary was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his siblings Ramona Carbone (Timothy Kalkhof), Brian Ells (Patricia) and Tina Napolitan (Richard).  He is also survived by his Aunt Glennis Ells Ricketts, cousins Carol Schelin (Robert), Leslie Heffernan (Clark) along with several other relatives of his parents.

Robert J. Madden

Wellsville, NY - Robert J. Madden, 86, a former resident of 144 Trapping Brook Road passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at Manor Hills. He was born June 28, 1933 at Tullar Maternity Hospital in Wellsville,  the son of the late Theodore and Catherine (Brennan) Madden. On September 23, 1961 at St. Joseph's Church in Scio he married Catherine J. Baker who predeceased him on April 6, 1992.

Bob was a 1949 graduate of the Immaculate Conception School, and Wellsville High School in 1951. He was employed at Worthington Corporation for 43 years, retiring as a pattern maker in 1994. He was an active member of the Dyke Street Engine Company Company No. 2, where he served as secretary for 58 years. He was a life member of the Volunteer Fireman's Association of Allegany County and the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Fireman, a member of the the Fireman's Association of New York State, a member past president of the Scio Senior Sunshine Club, and a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, where he served as an usher for many years.  Bob enjoyed living at Manor Hills were he resided since June of 2015. He also enjoyed woodworking, and collecting model firetrucks.  

He is survived by his daughter Janet E. (Lori Niemi) Madden of Plymouth MA, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents and wife by a brother Edward Madden, and a sister, Marlene McDowell.

Patricia Ann Ross (Seaver) (Pratt) Baker

Wellsville, NY - Patricia Ann Ross (Seaver) (Pratt) Baker passed away Monday, December 23, with family at her side following a long battle with cancer.  Pat was born on February 14, 1942 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Clair and Pearl (Robbins) Ross.

She attended Wellsville High School. In March 1960 she married John H. Seaver and moved with him to Colorado before he was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas. In the mid-60s she was married to Keith R. Pratt in Fort Worth. She returned home to Wellsville with her five children in 1970.

Over the years Pat worked a variety of jobs including woodworking, dispatching and taxi driving and at Neu Tech Document Retrieval, all while raising her five children, as a single parent. In the early 80s she co-owned and operated, with her mother, the Lone Star Café in Wellsville and in her later years she was co-founder and bookkeeper for RJB Trucking.

In her 30s and 40s Pat coached girls’ softball. She also enjoyed bowling and helped her team win many local and state tournaments. 

Civic minded, in the mid-90s she joined the Great Wellsville Hot Air Balloon Rally Committee and worked in the Rally store eventually running it. She also designed and decorated the committee’s floats for the annual Rally parade for many years.

She co-founded Music on the Lawn in 1997 and for 17 summers she worked each week providing and selling refreshments and helped organize fund raisers on its behalf during the rest of the year.

Pat worked tirelessly on her 50th Class Reunion celebration for the Class of 1960. She volunteered and helped organize the Wellsville Bi-Centennial celebration in 2007. She was happy to play Mrs. Santa Claus in the village’s first modern day Christmas Parade. She also delivered Meals on Wheels to area residents.

On October. 30, 2003 she married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Baker who predeceased her in December 2016.

In her later years, Gramma Pat enjoyed and proudly attended her great grandson Ty’s baseball games and tournaments and her great-granddaughter Raegan’s softball games. 

Pat is survived by four children, her daughter Michele of Wellsville; sons, John (Suzanne) Seaver of Covelo, Calif., Ross (Deborah Ramsey) Seaver of Wellsville and Greg Pratt of Wellsville; 11 grandchildren, Christopher Seaver, Heather Vogel, Jes Seaver, April House, Bobbi Wilber and Jake Seaver, Skylar and Chandler Pratt, Douglas Cook, Cody and Samantha (Hanbach) Pratt;  15 great-grandchildren; a sister,  Kathryn Ross and several cousins and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, a son, Keith R. Pratt and her husband Ron.

Pat will be remembered as a cheerful person, who was always ready to lend a helping hand and who never turned anyone away from her door or hesitated to speak her mind. 

A service in memory of her life will be held at the convenience of the family at a date and time to be announced.

Alan M. Matteson

 Wellsville, NY - Alan M. Matteson,  age 61, of the Palmer Road, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, December 22, 2019. Alan was born in Kane, PA on July 17, 1958, the son of Marion and Mary (Greene) Matteson.

Alan was a lifelong resident of this area who graduated from the Wellsville High School. He worked at the Air Preheater Co. and Friendship Dairy and retired from the Dresser-Rand Corp in Wellsville.  He loved the out of doors especially hunting and fishing. Alan enjoyed go cart racing, NASCAR and tinkering.

Alan was a Life Member and Past Assistant Chief of the Willing Fire Department who lived for his grandchildren and spending time with them.  He was also a member of the International Association of Machinist, Local No. 1580 in Wellsville.

Alan is survived by his parents, Marion and Mary; 4 daughters: Beth (Michael) Hall of Red Lion, PA; Jennifer (Gregory) Hall of North East, PA; Heather (Michael) Button of Whitesville; and Aimee (Timothy) Pincoski of Allegany; a son Cody [Casey Reed] Matteson of Wellsville; 12 grand children, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Cadence, Caleb, Brooke, Mandy, Karrie, Justin, Kaylee, Jordyn, Tyler and Deven; a great granddaughter, Ezra; a brother, Brian [Tammy] Matteson of Wellsville; a sister, Karen Weinhauer of Wellsville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alan was predeceased by a bother Scott, a bother in law Stanley Weinhauer and a grand daughter, Taylor.

Russell D. Knowles

Wellsville, NY - Russell D. Knowles, 79, of 4192 Bolivar Road passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Jones Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born January 17, 1940 in Wellsville, the son of the late Alfred R. and Alice M. (Edwards) Knowles Sr.

Russ was 1958 graduate of Wellsville High School. He was formerly employed by the Scoville Brown Company and later by Dresser-Rand Corporation, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #919, the Olean Assembly Forth Degree Knights of Columbus, the Mercy Associates, and a founding member and President of the Father Brown Mission Club for many years.

He is survived by two sisters, Helen Hubbard of Oklahoma City, OK; and Noreen (Robert) Williams of Copperas Cove, TX; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Knowles of Wellsville, several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend and caregiver, Maureen Cooper of Wellsville.

He was predeceased  addition to his parents by two brothers, Alfred Knowles Jr. and Richard Knowles, three sisters and brothers-in-law, Beverly and Richard Abbott, Shirley and Wilbur Geer and Edith and Frank Morgan, and a brother-in-law, Frank Hubbard.

Joan C. “Pidge” Daily

Wellsville, NY - Joan C. “Pidge” Daily, 92, of 3140 Riverside drive passed away at home on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 following a long illness. She was born January 24, 1927 in Wellsville the daughter of the late Clarence and Alice (Gardner) Christman. On November 7, 1953 in Wellsville she married William Burton Daily who survives.

“Pidge” was raised in Wellsville and was a 1945 graduate of Wellsville High School. She later graduated from Cazenovia College and Alfred University. She was formerly employed at C. E. Air Preheater Company. She was a member of Beta Sigma Pi, and Grace United Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Lynn Brunette of West Suffield, CT, and Beverly “Chris” (Jason) McChesney of Morgantown, WV, five grandchildren, Paul, Peter, Catherine, Ben, and Sarah, several nieces and nephews, and her beloved caregivers, Tina Shafer, Cynthia Norman, Crystal Hogan, Lori Bowker, Lynnie Bartoo, and Suky Faulkner. She was predeceased in addition to her parents, by two sisters, Beverly Bradley, and Nancy Cotton.

Robert E. Johnson Sr.

Wellsville, NY - Robert E. Johnson Sr., 86, of 3249 Wightman Road passed away on Monday, December 16, 2019 at Jones Memorial Hospital with family at his side. He was born March 31, 1933 in Charlottesville, VA, the son of the late Joseph Thomas and Martha E. (Powell) Johnson. On April 18, 1953 in Charlottesville he married Ann “Irene” Hurlburt who survives.

“Bob” was raised in  Charlottesville, and moved to Wellsville in 1965. He was employed by Alfred Atlas for 25 years, retiring in 1998. He was a life member of the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW in Wellsville. He raced stock cars at Drum Raceway and Woodhull Raceway. He enjoyed NASCAR and was an avid Buffalo Bills Fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Robert E. Johnson Jr. and Ronald O'Neil (Laurie) Johnson both of Wellsville, two daughters, Rebecca (Kevin) Greek of Clymer, PA, and Rosa M. Norman of Wellsville, 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, a sister, Thelma (Robert) Dunvivan of Lemon Spring, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a infant son, Eugene Allen Johnson, three brothers, and three sisters.

Laurie A. Cornelius

Wellsville, NY - Laurie A. Cornelius, 50, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at Rochester General Hospital following a lingering illness. She was born May 29, 1969 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Gerald C. and Judy A. (Lewis) Cornelius. 

Laurie was raised in Wellsville, she was a 1987 graduate of Wellsville High School and attended Olean Business Institute. She was formerly employed as a receptionist at Jones Memorial Hospital. She has resided in Texas, Salamanca, and most recently in Rochester. She enjoyed making crafts, reading and watching TV.

She is survived by a son Brady, a brother, Bradley (Samantha) Cornelius of Wellsville, a nephew, Zachary Cornelius, two nieces, Danielle and Anna Cornelius, four aunts, and several cousins. She was predeceased in addition to her parents by a brother, Michael E. Cornelius on May 31, 1988, and a niece, Chelsea Cornelius.

Richard M. “Dick” Burrous

Sun City, Florida - Richard M. “Dick” Burrous, 84, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the Brandon Health and Rehab Center. He was born April 24, 1935 in Wellsville, NY the son of the late C. Mat and Beryl (Lowe) Burrous. 

Dick was raised in Genesee, PA and was a 1953 graduate Wellsville High School. He attended Penn State University before transferring to Alfred University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After college, he enlisted in the U. S. Army where he spent 3 ½ years stationed at Fort Dix, Korea, Turkey and Germany. He was one of a select few to attend the inaugural flight of Pan Am 707 from Frankfurt to Istanbul. He spent the last year and a half of his military service stationed in Kassel, Germany during the building of the Berlin Wall and was honorably discharged in 1961.

Dick returned home to Genesee, PA to join his father in the family business, Chapman-Burrous Incorporated. On April 27, 1963 he married Connie (Wood) and settled in Wellsville. In 1964 Chapman-Burrous was dissolved and Burrous Furniture Incorporated was established in Wellsville. He owned and operated Burrous Furniture for 36 years, after which he closed the business and retired to Florida in 1999. He was an active participant and member of Immaculate Conception Church, in Wellsville and a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Sun City Center FL.

Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Connie, of Sun City Center, FL; one son Thomas Paul (Trina) Burrous and a daughter Karen Jill (Joseph) Cronin; five grandchildren, Sarah Emilie Burrous, Alexandra Lynn Burrous, Nicolas Mathew Burrous, Katherine Rose Cronin, Nicole Concetta Cronin; and one great grandson, Carter Allan Pearson; five nieces, Shaun (Smith) Hov, Lise’ (Trumbull) Brown, Susan (Trumbull) Biehl, Joni Neus, and Jeni Barnes one nephew, Kevin Smith, a sister-in-law, Nancy Quackenbush and several cousins. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a son, James Mathew Burrous, a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Burrous, two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Wanda and David Trumbull, Barbara and Frank Smith and Terry Quackenbush.

Virginia F. Petrie

Wellsville, NY - Virginia F. Petrie, age 89, of Riverside Drive passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born on August 7, 1930 in Roulette, PA to Carroll and Emma Zizka Fessenden. In 1948 she married Philip Petrie who predeceased her on October 26, 1989.

Virginia was a longtime resident of the Scio/ Wellsville Area and graduated from Roulette High School in 1948. On August 7, 1948 she married her high school sweetheart and later became a stay at home mom. Her second career began at Halls Drug Store and she retired from Peterson's Drug Store. In her retirement she enjoyed a quiet life.

Survivors include a son, Brian (Dawn)  Petrie of Mount Pleasant, NC; a daughter, Michele (Patrick)  Barry of Wellsville; 5 grandchildren, Hope (Marcus)  King of Harrisburg, NC, Jill (Mike)  Dube of Concord, NC, Marc (Frances)  Petrie of Clifton Park; Shannon (Ryan)  Alban of Bel Air, MD, and Christopher (Christie)  Barry of Baldwin, MD; 9 great grandchildren Addison, Chelsea, Zachary, Alexander, Connor, Julie, Elsie, Bryson, and Victoria; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, 3 brothers, Robert, Russell and Richard Fessenden, and a sister, Valera Weimer.

Leona S. Scott,

Belmont, NY - Leona S. Scott, age 91, formerly of State Route 19 South passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Jones Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 1, 1928 in West Union to  Walter E. Kelly and Susan Jane Cornell. On May 28, 1955 In Belvidere she married George E. Scott who predeceased her on August 14, 1988.

Leona was raised in Whitesville and spent most of her life in the Belmont Area.  She had worked for the Belvidere Restaurant, Weinhauer's Restaurant in Scio and last she worked for the Belmont Hotel as a waitress, a cook and a bartender. She was long time member of the Herbert DeLong American Legion Post #808 Auxiliary of Belmont. Leona was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family.

Leona is survived by her two daughters, Georgia Watson and Jane Hurd both of Belmont; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Leslie, Brent, Tracy, Alisha, Richard and Rhonda; several great grand children and great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Leona was also predeceased by her parents, a daughter Janet L. Whitney, two grandchildren Amanda and Brian, three sisters and five brothers.

Lola J. Cline

Wellsville, NY - Lola J. Cline, 85, of 1974 Hallsport Road, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2019 at the Hart Comfort House, she was born July 14, 1934 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Harry S. and Florence (Baker) Allen. On August 2, 1952 in Wellsville, she married Lester V. Cline, who survives.

In addition to being a homemaker, Lola was a Restorative Aide at the Highland Park  Healthcare Center in Wellsville, and was the Office Manager at Cline Retreading Company in Wellsville. She enjoyed reading, making afghans, bowling and watching television.

Surviving in addition to her husband, are two sons Thomas (Patricia) Cline and Kenneth (Teresa) Cline, a daughter Debra (Guy) Jackson, all of Wellsville, a brother, Richard Allen,  a  half-brother, Lelon (Shirley) Allen, 11 grandchildren, Tabitha (Mark) Jachlewski, Rachel (John) Wells, Nathanael (Erinnae) Cline, Deborah Cline, Timothy (Amy) Cline, Jason Cline, Megan (Michael) Fanelli, Jerad Cline, Andrew (Ashleigh) Cline, Carissa Jackson, and Jennifer (Justin) Henry; 10 great-grandchildren Atley, Elizabeth, Isabelle, Brenda, Luca, Wrigley, Ripken, Logan, Braedyn, and Colin, several nieces and nephews, and two special sisters in-law, Ruth Carney and Eleanor Harrison. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her step-mother, Eva Allen, her sister Bonnie (Allen) Wheeler, step brother, Robert Eck, sister-in-law, Marcella Allen, special brother-in-law, Harry Carney, and a great grandson, Salvatore Fanelli.

William B. Carlin

Wellsville, NY - William B. Carlin, 77, of 2231 Stannards Road passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, surrounded by his family at the Bath VA Medical Center following a long battle with cancer. He was born on February 18, 1942 in Wellsville the son of the late Bernard James and Mabel (Sortore) Carlin.

Bill was a 1961 graduate of Wellsville High School. He is a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1961 to 1966. During his enlistment he was stationed in Norfolk, VA. and Holy Lock, Scotland. Once discharged, Bill went to work at Worthington Corporation in Wellsville in April of 1966 and retired in 2002 from Dresser-Rand Corporation after 40 years of service. 

He was a member, Past Captain, and Past President of the McEwen Hose Company No. 4.  He was a member of the Allegany County Association of Volunteer Firemen, Southwestern Association of Volunteer Fireman. He was also a Life Member, and  Past Commander, serving 3 terms, of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion in Wellsville.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Chuck) Duesler of Little Genesee, two sons, Mark (Becky) Carlin of Palmerton, PA, and Kevin (Christa) Carlin of Richmond, KY, six grandchildren, Heather Jordan, Aric Jordan,  Krista Carlin,  Liam Carlin, Ira Carlin, and Noah Carlin, a brother, Thomas Paul Carlin of Scio and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by his brother, and sister-in-law, James F. and Carole Carlin.

Joan E. Watson

Belmont, NY - Joan E. Watson, 88, went to be with the Lord, at the home of her son, Dean on December 4, 2019, of congestive heart failure.  She was born September 8, 1931 in Erie, PA the daughter of the late Richard J. and Marian A. (Knipper) Heuer She was raised in Wellsville and was a 1948 graduate from Wellsville High School.  On February 24, 1951 in Belmont she  married Raymond K. Watson who predeceased her on June 7, 2003. Joan worked at many businesses, including Gunlocke Upholstery in Almond and retired from the Allegany County Office for the Aging.

Joan attended the Belmont First Baptist Church, and she loved music and dancing. She was a member of Sunshine Club in Scio, and the Belmont Growing Stronger.  She enjoyed sewing, making crafts, and baking. She was a feisty and beautiful women with a sweet disposition, and was kind to everyone she met. 

She is survived by four daughters, Laura (Spencer) Conklin of Bath, Kathy (Russ VanNostrand) Hooker of Arkport, Sharon (Martin) Woodard of Canisteo, Diane Burdick of Hornell, two sons, Dean (Carrie) Watson of  Belmont, and Dale (Tiersa) Watson of Wellsville, a brother, Russell Heuer of Haslet, Texas, 24 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to parents and husband by a son, Donald, a sister Marian Hankins; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a special friend, Max Knapp.

Cynthia Ann Robbins

Belmont, NY - Cynthia Ann Robbins, 63, formerly of Odessa, NY. passed away at her home with her husband by her side in Belmont on November 30, 2019. She was the daughter of Freeman and Eunice [Hodge] Cooper, born on April 16, 1956. Cindy married Alva Robbins on May 3, 1974 and together they shared a wonderful life, raising two children [Alva Robbins and Nicole Robbins] and two step children [Amy Turner and Mary Smith].

Cindy was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren  and embraced every moment with them. She had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. Cindy loved to love on people. Her hands were rarely still as she was always crocheting, knitting or crafting something for someone. She shared her passions with her devoted, loving sister Nancy Thomas. She enjoyed playing Euchre and treasured her memories of traveling with her husband and family over the years. Cindy was fierce with determination in life and never gave up easily.

Roger E. Linza

Belmont, NY - Roger E. Linza, age 87, of Willets Avenue passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at home following a lengthy illness. He was born on August 4, 1932 in Wellsville to Max and Faith Withey Linza. On July 26, 1952 in Wellsville he married Marian Herke who predeceased him on August 11, 2001. In Houston Texas on February 14, 2004 he married Helen Redman who survives.

Roger graduated from Wellsville Central High School and was a long time resident of the Wellsville and Stannards area and had served 2 years in the US Army Medical Corps. He had worked for R.V. Umiker Grocery Store, Worthington Corporation and later he became the owner of  Linza's Meat Market. In his retirement Roger took on a delivery route for the Cheese Factory of Blasdell and was a member of the Belmont United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides his wife are 2 sons, Dennis Linza of Michigan and Michael (Karen)  Linza of Wellsville; a daughter, Kathy (Paul)  Good of Horseheads; a step son, Bruce Carpenter of Rapid City, South Dakota ; 3 step daughters, Gail Green of Sun City Florida, Barbara Wells of Angelica and Tina Tennant of Bruceton Mills, West Virginia; 3 brothers, Reverend Raymond (Barbara)  Linza of Jamestown, Harley (Phillis)  Linza of West Field, Pennsylvania, and Gary (Connie)  Linza of Stannards; a sister, Marjorie Layton of Moravia;a sister in law, Janet Linza of Houston Texas; 7 grand children, several great grandchildren, step grandchildren and step  great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Roger was also predeceased by his son David Linza and his brothers,Max, Merle, Ernest, Donald and Dale Linza.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday, December 5  at the Belmont United Methodist Church  from 11 am until 12 noon. A funeral service will follow at 12 noon in the church with Reverend Stephen Crowell  presiding with burial in Yorks Corner's Cemetery.
