Wellsville, NY - Evelyn L. Devore, 103, formerly of 152 Madison Street died on Tuesday, April 06, 2010 at the Wellsville Highland Healthcare Center. She was born November 14, 1906 in the Township of Ward, the daughter of Archie and Margaret (Reynolds) Baker. On September 8, 1938 in Wellsville she married John E. Devore who predeceased her on March 26, 1979.
She was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception School, Wellsville High School and St. Vincent's Charity Hospital, School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio in 1929. For 50 years she was employed as a registered nurse, serving as a private duty nurse and training nurse's aides for the American Red Cross during World War II. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, the Immaculate Conception Altar and Rosary Society, the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Allegany County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Allegany County Registered Nurses Association.
She is survived by several nieces & nephews including, A. Michael Baker and John J. Dean both of Wellsville. In addition to her husband, she predeceased by a son, James A. Devore, four sisters, Mary Porter, Catherine 'Kit" Dean, Gertrude Baker and Margaret Glending and one brother, James J. Baker.
Friends are invited to call on Friday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 am in the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 12:00 noon in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville with Monsignor Vincent Becker as Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville. Memorial donations are suggested to the Immaculate Conception School or any charity of the donor's choice.
