Belmont, NY - Reverend Vernon M. Dean, age 86, of Greenwich Street went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at his home. He was born in Buffalo on November 12, 1932 to the late Faxon and Mabel Tolsma Dean. On April 10, 1954 he married Lois Alice Kerr who predeceased him on December 11, 1983. On December 28, 1984 he married Marjorie Rose who survives him.
Vernon attended Fredonia State University and graduated from Clarks Summit Baptist Bible College in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. He served in the US Army from 1953 until 1955 where he was a bugler and played the french horn.
Early on he was a tool and dye maker who had worked for Chevrolet, General Electric, Ford, and IBM. In 1962 he accepted the Lord and served him the remainder of his life. He served several Baptist Pastorates and interim Pastorates including Dimock, PA., Liverpool, Belmont, Humphrey, and last in Yorks Corners. He served others in many ways including Chaplin to the Allegany Sheriffs Department, he was very involved in many capacities at the Belmont Christian Academy, and delivering Meals on Wheel from where he resigned the morning of his death. Vernon served on many councils and capacities with in the Baptist Church including the Tri-County Fellowship, the Empire State Baptist Seminary, and as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Empire State Baptist Fellowship. Vernon and Marjorie spent winters in Zephyrhills, FL.,and were members of the Victory Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie, 3 children, Robin (Garry) Smith of Sayre, PA., Gary Dean of Kirkville, and Allison Scanlon of Depew; 2 step children, Louise (Garrry) Jordan of Belmont, and William (Karen) Rose of Dade City FL.; 12 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren; a nephew, Aaron Dean.
Vernon was predeceased by his first wife Lois, his brother Allan Dean, a son in law Phillip Scanlon, and a step son Ernest Rose.
Friends are invited to call on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at the First Baptist Church of Belmont from 11 am until 1 pm at which time a funeral service will take place. Memorials in Vernon's name may be made to the First Baptist Church of Belmont or to Meals on Wheels. Pastor Dean was a great man of faith who had a big impact on my life. His faith in God was firm and steadfast. He was a man of prayer. His walk with God was demonstrated in his kind and caring disposition to others. There was a phrase that he always used in his preaching when he got excited about some great spiritual truth - he would yell out GLORY! I believe that that is what he shouting right now as he stands before Jesus. I wish that I could have made it to the funeral. I am praying for Mrs. Dean and the family.
