Mary R. Slocum


Wellsville, NY - Mary R. Slocum, 71, of 3592 Weidrick Road passed away Sunday, November 04, 2012 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness. She was born December 24, 1940 in Wellsville the daughter of the late Albert and Ruth (Kemp) Burgess. On August 16, 1960 in Gaines she married Francis B. Slocum who survives.

Mary was a 1959 graduate of Wellsville High School. She was formerly employed at the Panty Shanty in Hornell, J. J. Newberry's and Rite Aid in Wellsville, and sold Avon products. She was a life member of the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, and a member of the VFW, American Legion and Moose Lodge Auxiliaries. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and good friend to many in the Wellsville area.

Surviving in addition to her husband is one daughter, Deborah (Jim) Kozlowski, two sons, Francis B. Slocum II and Daniel F. Slocum all of Wellsville, three grandchildren, April Kozlowski, James Kozlowski II and Trinity Amadon and one great-grandson, Brockton Putman, one sister, Alice Berry of Florida and one brother, Dale Burgess of Wellsville. She was predeceased in addition to her parents by her step father, Samuel Ordiway, a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Slocum, and three brothers, John, Ernest, and Lewis Burgess.

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Eastlack presiding. Burial will be in Stannards Cemetery.     To the Slocum Family;
    I have so many wonderful memories of your wife/mother from my childhood. She was quite a lady! Her love of her family, kindness to all, and incredible sense of humor will never be forgotten. Please take comfort in the wonderful memories you will always cherish, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
