Adelaide McClure Wightman

Wellsville, NY - Adelaide McClure Wightman, 96, formerly of 204 East Pearl Street passed away on Tuesday, November 6, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born, the youngest of 9 children, to Oscar and Minnie Shearer McClure on September 17, 1916 in Salamanca. On March 29, 1941 she married Walter "Red" Wightman who predeceased her on December 31, 2005.

Adelaide moved to Olean at the age of one, when her mother passed away, to live with her grandmother and graduated from Olean High School in 1934. She began working her senior year of high school as a part time secretary for the high school principal. From 1936 until 1946 Adelaide worked for J.D. Dickson Attorney in Wellsville as his secretary. In 1946 she began working part time as a secretary at the Wellsville High School until 1964. In 1964 she began working at Jones Memorial Hospital as the administrative assistant to the hospital administrator. During her eighteen years at Jones Memorial she worked under five different administrators until her retirement on May 1, 1982. Adelaide was a member of the First Trinity Lutheran Church in Wellsville and was involved with the Lutheran Ladies Aid and the Alter Guild. Along with her husband, Walter, she square danced with the Grand Squares.

Survivors include: a son Mark Wightman of Blairsville, GA.; a daughter, Nancy (James) Thomas of Wellsville and a son in law Carlton Bledsoe of Wellsville: 8 grandchildren, Tammy, Kim, Brad, Kelly, Heidi, Brian, Amanda and Tara; 10 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren: a sister in law, Norma Mae Thompson: several nieces and nephews.

Adelaide was also predeceased by her daughter, Marlene Bledsoe on December 23, 2010.

Friends are invited to call on Sunday, November 11, between 7 pm and 9 pm, at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. Her funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 am at the First Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert Morris presiding.
