Dawn Michelle Hall-Layman

Wellsville, NY - Dawn Michelle Hall-Layman, 48, of 3784 Weinhauer Hill Road died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at home. She was born April 9, 1964 in Toms River, NJ the daughter of Howard and Martha (Jackson) Hall. On July 13, 2002 in Wellsville she married Robert Layman who survives.

She was formerly employed at the Modern Diner and was currently employed as a cook and waitress at Castaways. She was an avid singer and enjoyed "Open Mic Night" at the VFW. She also enjoyed canning, cooking and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving in addition to her husband is her mother, Martha Hall of Loris, SC, one son, John Johnson of Wellsville, three daughters, Amelia (Jason) Workman of Andover, Crystal Johnson of Andover and Renee Layman of Wellsville, five grandchildren, Destiny, Naudia, Zander, Mylah and Aliza, one brother, Christopher Hall of Wellsville, four sisters, Sasha Montbelle of Andover, Yvonne (Dave) Volkmar of Arcadia, FL, Cathy (Jim) Royer of Loris, SC and Julie (Bryan) Holtz of North Dakota, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Howard Hall.

Farr L. Mehle

Wellsville, NY - Farr L. Mehle, 75, of 2805 Lindy Lane died Friday, (October 26, 2012) at Jones Memorial Hospital follow a brief illness. She was born February 25, 1937 in Drexel Hill, PA the daughter of the late Edger and Arline (Mc Ilnay) Lindenmuth. 

Farr was raised in Drexel Hill and moved to Arizona in 1968; where she was employed as the Director of Nursing at the Kivel Nursing Home in Phoenix. She moved to Wellsville in 2005 to be near her son. She was a wonderful cook and a gifted artist. She loved art, home design, interior decorating, Native American Culture, reading and visiting with the artists at the Wellsville Creative Art Center.  

She is survived by one son Linden "Neel" (Sara) Geshwind of Wellsville, five grandchildren, Brannen, Murphy, Sara, Nathan and Aretha, two great grandchildren, Cloey and Caleb.

Alpheus R. Streeter

Wellsville, NY - Alpheus R. Streeter, 88, of 46 Wheeler Place died Saturday, (October 27, 2012) at home. He was born June 2, 1924, at his family's home in Wilmington, VT the son of Earl G. and Mary A. (Sheenan) Streeter. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1942 and in 1943; he graduated from St. Joseph's business College in Bennington, VT. In 1953, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in business education from the University of Vermont in Burlington. From 1953 to 1954, he did extensive study at SUNY Plattsburgh. After summer school at Siena College in Loudonville, and Russell Sage in Albany in 1956, he received his education master's degree in secondary school administration in 1959 from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. He was a member of Lambda Iota Fraternity and its board of governors from 1953 -1964. He also was a member of Kappa Phi Kappa, an honorary education society.

Al served in the United States Army from 1943-1946 with the Office of the Surgeon General in the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany. He also served from 1950-1951 with the Army's Office of Inspector General at Camp Edwards, Mass., during the Korean War.

On October 13, 1962, at St. Patrick's Church in Port Henry, he married Senta M. Dombrowsky who survives. He was employed as a teacher and assistant principal at Crown Point Central School in Essex County from 1954 to 1963. He was an assistant professor at Jamestown Community College from 1963-1965. In 1965, he moved to Wellsville and from then until his retirement in 1990, he was an associate professor in the math department at Alfred State College.

Al was involved in many professional, religious and civic organizations, including the Association of University Professors, AARP and St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was a member of the Olean Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, a Eucharistic minister and board of education member for the Immaculate Conception Church and School. He was a charter member, secretary and president of the Kiwanis Club in Wellsville and served two terms as lieutenant governor for the Kiwanis Southwestern Division of New York State. He was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts and enjoyed skiing, traveling, water and oil painting and was a talented calligrapher. His family was paramount in his life, along with his church and religion.

Surviving in addition to his wife are six sons, John Streeter of Hornell; Todd (Georgia) Streeter of Spencerport; twin sons Darryle (Maria) Streeter of Batavia and Douglas (Theresa) Streeter of Rochester; Patrick Streeter of Evansville, Ind.; and Kyle (Melanie) Streeter of Wellsville; 2 sisters in law, Eleanor Streeter of Randolph, VT., and Priscilla Streeter of Sandwich, Mass.; a brother in law, Donald [Lila] Dombrowsky of St. Augustine, FL.; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret and four brothers, George, Richard, Frederick and Edward Streeter.

Addie G. Peterson

Wellsville, NY - Addie G. Peterson, 92 years old and a 90 year resident of Wellsville died Ocotber 25, 2012 after more than a four year battle with heart failure and other health problems. She was born in Andover and moved to Wellsville when she was 2 years old. She graduated from Wellsville High School in 1938, where she was Valedictorian of her class.

Her four year health battle took her to 7 different hospitals from Houston to Rochester and included more than 50 emergency calls for EMS and more than 50 hospital stays. Even during this difficult battle she kept her positive outlook and many times stated: "I've had a good life". She made the most of her life including to the end. She enjoyed her family and family vacations, her many pets over the years, cooking, country music (she saw about 100 singers in concert), flowers, travel ing and her 45 year career at National Fuel Gas which included its predecessors Bradley Oil, Empire Gas Iroquois Gas.

She traveled extensively to about 31 States, cruised to the Caribbean and visited her son, when he lived in Paris, and took a family driving tour of France, Belgium Holland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden which was the original home of her mother's and father's families. Except for the past 2 years, when her health prevented travel, she spent more than 20 winters in Texas with her family. She greatly enjoyed her second home on Keuka lake as well as annual family vacations in the Finger Lakes and Round Lake in Canada before the Keuka Lake home was purchased in 1967.

She shared with her husband, Chet, the life and family raising philosophy that: "Along the Way One Should Take Time to Smell Flowers".

She was the daughter of Mary Johnson Gustafson and Oscar Gustafson of Wellsville. She is survived by her son Bob Peterson, and daughter, Marcia Peterson of Houston and Wellsville respectively. She is preceded by husband, Chet Peterson and son, Larry Peterson as well as her sister Lois Gustafson and bothers Carl Gustafson and Donnie Gustafson. She is also survived by sister-in-Iaws Janice Gustafson of Wellsville and Dolly Peterson of Buffalo as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was a Cub Scout den mother and a member of many organizations including the Red Hat Ladies. She was the secretary of Bradley Oil's Boandga Club in Scio. She was life long member of the Christian Temple.

She did have a good life and did take time along the way to smell the flowers.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 pm Sunday at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville and the funeral will be at the Christian Temple Church Monday at II am. Rev. Ralph Eastlack will preside the service with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials in her name can be made to the SPCA. She loved all animals dearly. Lyle A. Eymer

Wellsville, NY - Lyle A. Eymer, age 83, of Whitney place passed away on Tuesday, October 23, at  Highland Park. He was born on March 6, 1929 in Belmont to Lewis and Maggie Rossman Eymer. On March 6, 1952 in Wellsville he married Doris Rahr who predeceased him on February 22, 1982.

Lyle was a wonderful husband, father, friend and fiancé. He loved to travel the United States in his motor home and in later years going to Sampson State Park on Seneca Lake, where he had been stationed upon his return from Korea. Lyle had a large group of devoted camping friends and enjoyed watching war movies and cowboy movies. He served his country in both the Air Force and the Merchant Marines. Lyle was employed by Air Preheater in Wellsville from where he retired in 1992 after 35 years of service.

Survivors include: His fiancé, Marlene Rose of Wellsville; 2 daughters, Cynthia (Bill) Engelder of Allegany and Lonnie (Mark) Van Tyne of Canton, OH.; 4 grandchildren, Valarie Engelder Vought, Erin Eymer Engelder, Lauren Elizabeth Van Tyne and Bradley S. Van Tyne; a great granddaughter, Olivia Katherine Vought; brothers and sisters in law; several nieces and nephews; Marlene's daughters, Janet (Bill Sweet) Kemp and Jeanine Weinhauer; special friend, Kirby Cline and his beloved cat Lucy.

Lyle was predeceased by: his wife Doris; 3 brothers, Lewis Eymer Jr., Gilbert Eymer and David Eymer; 2 sisters, Judy Knopp and Mary Rahr.

Miriam Moss Keeling Naftal

Austin, TX - Miriam Moss Keeling Naftal, 97, currently of Austin, TX passed away on October 11, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emanuel B. Naftal; her parents, Pastor Emeritus of the First Methodist Church of Wellsville, Rev. George Keeling and Charlotte Moss Keeling; sister, Verna Kelly; and three brothers-in-laws. Paulena McDowell Piper

Wellsville, NY - Paulena McDowell Piper, 88, of 3441 Moonlight Drive passed away Tuesday, (October 23, 2012 at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born February 14, 1924 in Tioga, PA the daughter of the late Zora and Helen (Torrence) LaPolt. On January 18, 1944 in Wellsville married Gerald L. McDowell who predeceased her on October 1, 1996. On August 20, 2001 she married Edward W. Piper who predeceased her on March 28, 2011. 

Paulena was very active in the United Methodist Church of Wellsville and in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Burton Chapter #129 of the Eastern Star; honorary member of the Olean Order of the Amaranth; Past Matron of the Burton Chapter #129 O.E.S; Past District Deputy Grand Matron, Allegany District O.E.S; Past Royal Matron of Friendship Court #59 Order of Amaranth; Past District Deputy Grand Royal Matron, Order of Amaranth; Past Grand Musician, Order of Amaranth and Organist for Burton Chapter, Friendship Court and Emmanus Shrine. Paulena worked in many fields including owning and operating Jeri's Beauty Shop, working for Wellsville Burial Case, dental assistant of Dr. Harvey Spencer, bookkeeper and secretary for Scoville Brown, legal secretary for Ellis J. Hopkins and later for J. Donald Hauselt. Paulena wrote many presentations for various Masonic orders over the years, taught Sunday School and directed the children's choir for many years at the United Methodist Church, did handiwork as a hobby, presenting many handmade items to her friends and performed vocal selections with her sister, Louise, at many Masonic functions. 

Survivors include: a son, Jerry L. McDowell of Rochester; a grandson, Richard J. McDowell of Rochester; a granddaughter, Emma McDowell of Rochester; a sister, Louise E. Brown of Wellsville; a nephew, Todd F. [Marylise] of Virginia Beach, VA. ; a great nephew, William F. Brown of Virginia Beach, VA.

Steven G. Gough

Wellsville, NY - Steven G. Gough, 64, of 225 East Dyke Street died on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at home following a brief illness. He was born January 15, 1948 in Seattle, Washington the son of the late Robert and Donna (Graham) Gough. On November 13, 1970 in Belmont he married Amy Barnetson who survives.

Steven was raised in Seattle, he moved to Belmont in 1968 and to Wellsville in 1970. At the time of his death he had been employed at Air Preheater Company in Wellsville for 43 years. He attended the Christian Temple in Wellsville.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Ryan (Missy) Gough of Wellsville and Bradley (Marie) Gough of Newport News, VA, four grandchildren, one sister, Laurie (Ken) Weigum of Seattle, WA and several Nieces & nephews.

Janice R. Scott

Belvidere, NY - Janice R. Scott, 83, of 5722 Church Street died on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the home of her daughter, Debra in Belvidere. She was born July 1, 1929 in Benegett, PA the daughter of the late Cassius and Helen (Sexton) Bundy. On December 22, 1951 in the Town of Alma she married Walter E. Scott who predeceased her on March 23, 2004.

Janice was a former resident of Allentown and attended the Allentown School. She enjoyed puzzles, flowers, feeding the birds, Yatzee with her sisters, playing card with her grandchildren, spending time with her family and going to her daughter, Debbie's home for holidays and cookouts. She also enjoyed spending time with her dogs and cats.

She is survived by two sons, Danny Scott and Kevin (Rose) Scott both of Belmont, two daughters, Debra (John) Osterhout of Belmont and Donna Ellsworth of Friendship, 12 grandchildren, John (Tami) Osterhout Jr., Dawn (Damon) Davis, Debra (Dan Fuller) Flores, Jason Flores, Danielle Flores, Kevin (Dawn) Scott, Shane (Erika) Scott, Gareth Scott, Odessa Scott, Amanda Scott, Dayna Scott and Chase Scott, 14 great grandchildren, Elaini Davis, Maggie Davis, Timothy Osterhout, Katie Osterhout, Tori Fanton, Sarah Morrison, Trenton Scott, Dylan Scott, Pacey Scott, Hendrick Scott, Hayle Rose Greene, Megan Murray, Daniel Fuller and Hunter Scott, two brothers, Vyle (Joan) Bundy of Andover and Clinton Bundy of Wellsville, a special sister-in-law, Clara Harris of Angelica, a special friend, Mabel Budinger of Belmont and several nieces and nephew. Lois Lucile Bardeen

Almond, NY - Lois Lucile Bardeen, 96, of 15 South Main Street died on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Wellsville Manor Care Center following a brief illness. She was born April 8, 1916 in the Town of Freemont, the daughter of Fred Ezra and Katie (Flanders) Bardeen. 

Lois was raised in Hornell and graduated from Penn Hall High School in Pennsylvania. She was employed by U.S. Government in Washington DC. She attended the Union University Church in Alfred and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Eastern Star and an active member of the Republican Club. She enjoyed her involvement in community show choirs and had a tremendous love of animals. 

She is survived by a niece, Lois (Robert) Decker, a nephew, Roger (Shirley) Gary, a great niece, Connie (Cort) Dunham, a great nephew, Robert (Gena) Decker as well as several great-great nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Fred Bardeen, her mother, Katie Bardeen Pullen, a sister, Helen Gary and a brother, Stanley Bardeen.

Clayton Edward Mahle

North Warren, PA - Clayton Edward Mahle, 54, of 33 Main Drive died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the Comfort House of Allegany County in Wellsville, NY, after being diagnosis with lung cancer on October 1st. He was born May 1, 1958 in Brookville, PA the son of Thomas and Fay (Beck) Mahle. 

Clayton was a 1978 graduate of the Clarion Area High School and attended the Williamsport Technical Institute. At age 20 he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and has resided at the Warren State Hospital in North Warren, PA since that time. In his youth, he loved electrical work and farming. He also enjoyed history, astrology, music and attending the services at the Warren State Hospital Interfaith Chapel.

He is survived by his mother Fay Billings of Wellsville, NY, his grandmother, Gladys Beck of Blair's Corners, PA, two brothers, Scott (Amy) Mahle of Concord, NC and Johnnie (Carrie) Billings of Marion, NY, one sister, Tammy Mahle of Wellsville, NY, his uncle & aunt, Sam and Audrey Mahle of Miola, PA and several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas Mahle and his grandfather, Kenneth Beck.

Charles R. "Bud" Dickens

Wellsville, NY - Charles R. "Bud" Dickens, 67, of 4192B Bolivar Road died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at home. He was born July 24, 1945 in Wellsville the son of the late Charles L. and M. Elaine (Hall) Dickens.

Charles was a former resident of Friendship and was a graduate of Friendship High School and Alfred State College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. He was formerly employed as a draftsman at Acme Electric in Cuba. He was a former member of the Friendship American Legion Post # 1168.

He is survived by one sister; Charlene D. Whitehill of Rio Rancho, NM; one brother, Gary L. Dickens of Wellsville; two nephews, two great nieces, one great nephew and several cousins.

Dolores M. Goetschius

Wellsville, NY - Dolores M. Goetschius, 79, of 3471 North Drive in Riverview Heights died on Thursday, October 11, 2012 surrounded by her family and friends. She was delivered by her grandma on April 12, 1933 at the home of her grandma and grandpa Graves in Graves Town, NY. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Mary (Graves) Joyce. On July 3, 1954 in Wellsville she married William K. Goetschius who survives.

Dolores had many fond memories of her childhood. When she was five years old, her dad walked her everyday to the county school on top of Meservey Hill; her teacher was Florence Harder Carpenter. She attended there for two years before attending the Fords Brook School and later the Immaculate Conception School in Wellsville. She was a 1951graduate of Wellsville High School where she met her husband in the ninth grade and as he sat behind her, he tied the large bow of her pink dress to her to her chair! She ended up marrying him anyway, four years later. She also recalls that her dad gave her a cow, that she named Maudine, which she dearly loved. She was employed at a licensed teacher's assistant at Wellsville Elementary School and she loved each and every child in her classroom. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She had a beautiful life and was loved by her family and many friends.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons William F. Goetschius of Wellsville; Brian (Dawnell) Goetschius of Texas City, TX; one daughter, Deborah A. Goetschius of Houston, TX; nine grandchildren, Joseph Calvin, Jared Lee, Julia Teresa, Gabriel Jan, Gregory Brian, Mary Grace, Madeline Rose, Ryan (Missy) William and Brody Paul Goetschius, one Great Grandson, Tyler Fitzgerald, two sisters, Anita (Clifford) Cornell of Virginia Beach, VA; Mary Frances (Gordon) Burdick of Wellsville; several nieces & nephews and her former daughter-in-law, Julie (Joe) Tripodi; who along with the staff at Manor Hills were a great help to the family over the last two years. She was predeceased by a niece, Teresa M. Burdick.

Lucile M. Bliven

Belmont, NY - Lucile M. Bliven, age 88, of State Route 244 passed away on Monday, October 8, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born in the Town of Ward on February 7, 1924 to Emitt and Gladys Ward Cline. On March 1, 1949 in Wellsville she married Paul Bliven who predeceased her on June 8, 1997.

Lucile was a long time resident of Belmont and graduated from Belmont High School. For a time she worked for the former Kayser Glove Factory in Wellsville and later baby sat for over 130 children at her home. She was fondly remembered by many of those children and last year was invited a high school graduation for one of the last she had babysat for. She had a great love of her family. She spent many hours with them picnicking out back of her home near the creek as well as cooking and baking for them and especially playing cards with her grandchildren. 

Survivors include: 3 sons, Shawn (Lynn) Bliven of Franklinville, Dennis (Donna) Bliven of Belmont and Lintz (Karen) Bliven of Belmont; a daughter, Susan (Robert) Abbott of Troy, PA.; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a brother Oliver (Doris) Cline of Belmont; a sister Bethel (Lloyd) McKee of Salunga, PA.

She was predeceased by 3 brothers.

There will be no prior visitation and a private graveside service will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Eldon C. Stephens

Alma, NY - Eldon C. Stephens, 68, of 178 Pump Station Road passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at home surrounded by his family. He was born December 9, 1943 in Wellsville, the son of the late Ronald A. and Bertha May (Brown) Stephens. On June 27, 1964 in the Allentown Methodist Church he married Lois E. Hurd who survives.

Eldon was a 1962 graduate of Scio High School and was a former resident of Allentown, Fulton, NY and Grand Junction, Michigan. He was employed as a machinist for over 40 years, primarily at Black Clawson Company in Fulton. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed mentoring his young friends and family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, James (Jessica) Stephens of Cortland, Christopher (Tina) Stephens of Fulton and Darcy (Michele) Stephens of Hannibal, NY, seven grandchildren, Ryan, Rachele, Alexis, Hunter and Aidan Stephens and Samantha and Sophia Lott, three sisters, Joyce (Dick) Shields of Bolivar, Norma (Phillip) Taylor of Allentown and Judy Stephens of Penfield, a brother-in-law, William Pacetti and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Stephens both of Orlando, FL and many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Linda Pacetti and a brother, Walter R. Stephens.

Friends are invited to call on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with Pastor David Dickerson presiding. Burial will be in Knights Creek Cemetery in Scio. James L. "Chow" Allen

Wellsville, NY - James L. "Chow" Allen of Eaton Court passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on December 31, 1934 in Wellsville to Leon and Florence Crance Allen.

James graduated from Wellsville High School in 1954 where he played football, basketball and baseball. Soon after graduation he joined the US Navy and served until 1958. In 1959 he started working in California for Van Hewitt Printers where he worked for 33 years retuning to Wellsville in 1992 to retire. James enjoyed a daily visit to the Texas Hot. He enjoyed the food and especially the companionship of the staff that he considered his second family. James also enjoyed reading and watching sports.

He is survived by: a sister, Sina Hallett (Bob McCracken) of Wellsville; 5 nieces and 1 nephew including Lucinda Hall, Renee` Jackson and Terri Jackson all of Wellsville.

He was predeceased by: a brother, Robert; a sister, Joyce Geer and a great niece, Casey Renee`Jackson.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Saturday October 6 at 2 pm in Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. Robert Morris presiding and full military honors to follow. Clarence G. Brownell

Wellsville, NY - Clarence G. Brownell of Niles Hill died unexpectedly on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at the Corning Hospital. He was born on January 8, 1966 in Wellsville to Elmer A. and Alice P. Armstrong Brownell Jr.

Clarence graduated from Wellsville High School in 1984. While in High School Clarence enjoyed participating in the musicals and played the lead in three of them. After high school he enlisted in the US Army serving in Germany on the border patrol. Clarence was a jack of all trades but mainly worked in building construction and was last employed by General Roofing. Clarence was kind hearted and was the life of the party who liked to sing karaoke. He loved spending time with family and friends, outdoor activities, camping and having bon fires.

Survivors include: a sister, Jeanna Brownell of Wellsville; 3 brothers, Daniel (Linda) Brownell, Darrold (Doria) Brownell and Elmer Brownell all of Wellsville; five nieces and one nephew; aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by: His grandparents, parents and a baby sister.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, October 5, from 12 noon to 2 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville at which time a funeral service will be held.
