Belmont, NY - Mary Helen Lehman, 76, of 5079 State Route 244 died on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at her home. She was born March 8, 1932 in Angelica the daughter of Watkins and Leola (Washburn) James. On March 22, 1952 in Scio she married Edward B. Lehman who survives.
Mary Helen was raised in Belmont and was a 1950 graduate of Belmont High School. She was employed as a school bus driver for the Belmont Central School System for 37 years retiring in 1994. She was an active member of the Belmont First Baptist Church; where she taught Sunday school and served as a deaconess. She was a lunch monitor for the Belmont Christian Academy, she delivered Meals on Wheels for the Allegany County Office for the Aging from 1995 to 2000, she was a former member of the Amity Rescue Squad and was an avid bowler at Community Lanes in Belmont.
“Aunt Mic” as she was affectionately referred to by her nieces and nephews was not only a loving wife, mother and grandmother but was like a mother to many young people in need who she invited to stay in her home. She will also be missed by her large extended family and many friends.
Surviving in addition to husband are, six children, James (Shirley) Lehman of Ashland, Ohio, Leo “Jon” (Judy) Lehman of Newburn, NC, Jeffery Lehman and Julie Lehman both of Belmont, Jane (Bryan) Baker of Nova, Ohio and Jerold “Jerry” (Fran) Lehman of Friendship, 14 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Leo Canfield.
Friends are invited to call from 7-9 pm Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 pm Sunday at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Belmont. The funeral will be Monday, March 2nd at 11:00 am in the Belmont First Baptist Church with Pastors Byron Brooks and Vernon Dean presiding. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont. Memorial suggestions include any charity of the donor’s choice.
