Donald E. “Don” Temple, 80

Wellsville, NY - Donald E. “Don” Temple, 80, of Kenyon Road passed away on Monday, March 29, 2021 at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 8, 1940 in Wellsville at Jones Memorial, the son of the late H. Lyle and Ednamae (McHenry) Temple. On September 30, 1974 at St. John's Catholic Church in Whitesville he married Mary Ann Ellison, who predeceased him on November 13, 2019. 

Don was a former resident of Stannards and a longtime resident of Whitesville. He was a 1958 graduate from Wellsville High School, and then attended Washington Jefferson College in Pennsylvania. He was in a band called “The Don Temple Trio” which led to him meeting the love of his life, Mary Ann. He worked for Tennessee Gas in Coudersport, PA. After moving on from Tennessee Gas, he traveled with Mary Ann for fifteen years across the country in their fifth-wheel while also working as an independent third-party welding inspector on pipe lines. Once their travels had to end, he faithfully visited his wife daily in the nursing home until her passing. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing (especially in Florida winters for the last seventeen years). He also very much enjoyed gardening, having vegetable gardens around the house, and then strawberry and apple orchards in Whitesville. 

He is survived by: two sons, Bernie (Edie Jo) Seligman of Genesee, PA, and Bradley (Julie) Seligman of Monroe, NC; a daughter, Rhonda (Peter) Seligman-Salchow of Sarasota, FL; a grandson, Aidan Seligman; two sisters, Brenda (Dan) Gill, and Diane (Jim) Jones; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Don was predeceased by: a brother, David Temple; a sister, Sylvia Marsh; and several nieces and nephews.

Linda L. Mattison, 72

Wellsville, NY - Linda L. Mattison, 72, of 23 North Main Street died on Thursday, March 25, 2021 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born June 19, 1948 in Wellsville the daughter of Gerald and Dorothy (Reynolds) Mills. On August 15, 1992 in Wellsville she married Darius C. Mattison who survives.

Linda was raised in the Bolivar/Allentown area, and was a graduate of Bolivar High School. After raising her family, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse, and was formerly employed at Founders Pavilion in Corning, and later transitioned to a private home healthcare provider, a career she dearly loved. She also worked for Ulysses Woodcraft and the Allegany County Department of Social Services. She enjoyed playing Bingo and loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to her husband, Darius are four children, Darien (Robin) Mattison, Dawn Allen, Danny Mattison, and Dale (Anita) Mattison, nine grandchildren, Darien Shane Mattison, Mikayla Mattison, Nikki Lee Sortore, Anthony Mattison, Danny Mattison Jr., Ashley Mattison, Helen Newman Davis, Felicity Hunter Mattison, and Ayden Michael Mattison, 12 great grandchildren, a brother, Jerry Mills, a sister, Judy (Terry) Clark, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Darius Mattison, a brother, Roger Mills, and a sister, Audrey Mills.

Herbert C. Vaughn, 86

Wellsville, NY - Herbert C. Vaughn, 86, of 3052 Madison Hill Road passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Highland Park Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was born July 1, 1934 in Wellsville, the son of the late Herbert M. and Mary (Clark) Vaughn. On November 24, 1954 in Wellsville he married Mary L. McCracken who predeceased him on January 4, 2007.

Herb was raised in Wellsville and was a graduate of Wellsville High School. He was a veteran serving with the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He was formerly employed at Carter's Hardware in Wellsville, and for many years with Dresser-Rand Corporation in Wellsville. He was a member of the Dyke Street Engine Company # 2, the Morrison Hayes American Legion Post 702, the Wellsville First United Methodist Church, and was a member and past president of WASPS (Wellsville Area Small Plane Society).

He is survived by: a brother, Ralph (Jean) Vaughn of Scio; a sister, Patricia Mickle of Wellsville; a cousin, Gary Holland;as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by: a brother-in-law, James Mickle in 1991; and a niece, Sharon Joy Vaughn in 1978.

Esther N. Wyckoff Moultrup, 92

Scio, NY - Esther N. Wyckoff Moultrup, 92, of Wolf Spring Road passed away peacefully at home on March 22, 2021,surrounded by her daughters. She was born July 29, 1928 in Scio, to Ernest and Agnes (Ost) Jackson.

Esther was a lifelong resident of Scio, and worked as a waitress at the Modern Diner and The Village Coffee Shop, as well as a bartender at Charlie’s Restaurant and Bierman’s. She was a member of the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, and a member of the Scio Volunteer Fire Department, Hose Company # 2.

On August 21st, 2005, she married Norman H. Moultrup in an intimate ceremony full of celebration for the love they shared for over 20 years. Norman and Esther loved listening to music and going on dates to dance the night away with their many country music friends. Norman predeceased Esther in June of 2006 but was carried very closely in her heart every day since.

Esther is survived by: her three daughters, Betty Jo (Rick) Moultrup of Allentown, Patricia (Robert) Stannard of Scio, and Virginia Elliott of Wellsville; a son, Jason (Ashley) Moultrup of Belfast; a son-in-law Bruce Guinnip of Scio; and daughter-in-law Karen Wyckoff of Geneva. She was a grandmother to fourteen; Tara, Sandy, Rickie, Michael, Laceanne, Daniel, David, Andrew, Crystal, Reggie, Christopher, Samantha, Carly, and Emma. Her grandchildren were always a source of pride for Esther, she loved baking for her grandchildren as well as challenging them to a game of Rummy. She was proudly great-grandmother to eighteen.

Esther is survived by her brother Ronald (Sue) Jackson of Delevan, sisters Linda Rix of Scio, and Sandra (Willis) Duell of Singlehouse, PA. She was Aunt Esther to 46. Esther is predeceased by her daughter Dorothy Guinnip; and son, Edward Wyckoff. She was also predeceased by: two brothers, Ernest Jackson and Robert Jackson; as well as five sisters, Cora Kinnicut, Ernestine Haynes, Beverly Brown, Audrey Jean Jackson, and Betty Marie Jackson.

There was never a time you weren’t welcome at Esther and Norman’s home and you could be sure it would be decorated for the season. We are comforted that she is at peace and has joined the sides of her family, especially Norman, Dotsie and Eddie. She will be forever loved and will now be carried closely in all of our hearts.

Lee J. Merrick, 95

Wellsville, NY - Lee J. Merrick, 95, of Andover Road, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at Jones Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. He was born the son of the late Lee H. and Ida Mae (Gibson) Merrick on May 1, 1925 in Wellsville. On October 25, 1947 he married his wife of seventy-three years, Ruth E. Allen, who predeceased him on February 4, 2021. 

Lee was a true character. He was a long time resident of Wellsville, who lived in Orlando, FL for a time before moving back to Wellsville for the last fifteen years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, and served from 1943 – 1946. He was also a member of the Cardinal Pistol Club, and a life member of the NRA. He won the NYS indoor Pistol championship two years in a row but also shot and won at Camp Perry. He owned and flew his own airplane at the Wellsville Municipal Airport on Bolivar Road. Professionally, Lee owned and operated Lee's Hodaka on the Andover Road, his store would later be called Lee's Guns and Ammo. He also worked as an Engineer at Air Preheater, he held many patents and worked on many government projects, including NASA, retiring in the early 1980s. In his early days he enjoyed driving and working on race cars, and raced on Fair Street, and in Cuba. He also enjoyed coin collecting, boating –  even owned several on Lake Erie and (later) in Florida. He was a member of the American Legion Post #702 and Wellsville Moose Lodge #601, and the Odd Fellows. 

He is survived by: four children, William Merrick of Wellsville, Sandra Merrick of Wellsville, Carol (Joseph) Schweigart of Bolivar, and Lisa (Paul) Rowe of Wellsville; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Charles (Susan) Allen of Lima, NY; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by: three sisters; and two brothers.

Beatrice L. Cochran, 88

Belmont, NY - Beatrice L. Cochran, 88, formerly of Nobles Road, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Highland Health Care Center in Wellsville, NY. She was born the daughter of the late Otto and Beatrice (Scheible) Conrad on March 16. 1933 in Easton, Pennsylvania. She married Paul L. Cochran who predeceased her in February 2001. 

Beatrice, along with her family, migrated from Alexander Township, New Jersey to Belmont, New York in 1987 to get away from the city life, She later became a member of the Baptist Tabernacle Church on Plum Bottom Road.  Her family was very important to her and she enjoyed working the family farm, gardening, canning, and making afghans for them. 

She is survived by: a daughter, Barbara (Bruce) Snyder of Milford, NJ; three sons, Barry (Grace) Cochran of New Jersey, Randy Cochran, and Patrick Cochran, both of Belmont; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Jen) Snyder, Justin (Krystal) Snyder, Paul C. Cochran, Matthew (Trista) Cochran, Olivia C. Cochran, and Karlee R. Cochran; six great-grandchildren; siblings, Eddie Conrad and Delores Schuster; and several nieces and nephews.

Marlene Janet (Pohl) Rose, “the Mudder”, 88

Wellsville, NY -  Marlene Janet (Pohl) Rose, “the Mudder”, 88, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Highland Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by family. She was born on January 11, 1933 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Walter and Mabel (Meyn) Pohl. 

She was employed at Bradley producing in Wellsville as a cashier/receptionist. While she was a “stay at home mom” she volunteered to be a Brownie Troop Leader, as her children, Janet & Jeannine were active Brownie members. In 1971, she became employed at Jones Memorial Hospital, as a Ward Clerk, on the second floor. She worked at Jones for twenty-three years, retiring in 1994, due to her open heart surgery. 

On August 10, 1979 she married “the love of her life” James Paul Rose (Pa Bear). He had eight children, of which she treated and loved as if they were her own. Jim and Marlene spent the majority of their time traveling and camping together at Four Lakes and Breezy Point Campsite. On Saturday night, they would venture down to the Breezy Point Dance Hall with the grand kids, to square dance and enjoy a couple glasses of “Kickapoo Juice”. Oh, how that juice was potent! On May 27, 1988, (Memorial Day Weekend) Jim had a massive heart attack and died. There were only married for nine years. 

In the fall of 1989 she met a gentleman by the name of Lyle Addison Eymer (Old Fart). He certainly was a card! He was very humorous and fit into the family very well. They too enjoyed camping at Breezy Point Campsite. Later on, Lyle purchased a RV and they traveled to Florida frequently. In the summer, they camped the RV at Sampson State Park in Romulus, NY. They made many friends there and even found a stray kitty cat, of which they adopted and named him Boots. On October 23, 2012, Lyle passed away, he too had a heart attack. 

The Mudder was fortunate enough to travel on two Caribbean Cruises, of which she enjoyed immensely with her family and friends. She attended many craft shows with her daughter Janet, and her friend Mary Ann Sparatta. She was a superb cook, had a heart of gold, and loved her family. Her hobbies included crocheting, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles, and reading. She loved socializing on Facebook and watching her birds, especially her cardinals. She had a soft heart for stray kitties, adopting many in her lifetime. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW Post #5647 Auxilary, and American Legion Post #702 Auxiliary. 

She is survived by: her daughters, Janet (Bill Sweet) Kemp, Jeannine (Will Smith) Weinhauer, both of Wellsville, Jayne (Fred Farris) Johnson of Phoenix, AZ, Sara (Howard) Razey of Smethport, PA, Zoelinda (Darryl) Main of Martinsville, VA; sons, Bob Rose of Ely, NV, Tom (Sherri) Rose of Akron, OH, and Tim (Kay) Rose of Seoul, South Korea; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce (Pohl) Stevens of Frankfort, KY; many nieces and nephews; cousins; and good friend, Mary Ann Sparatta of Wellsville. She is also survived by her “sweet and cute” Cockatiel, Pepper. 

In addition to her parents, and husband Jim, she was predeceased by: a son, Jim Rose Jr.; daughter, Nancy Haines; grandsons, Bryon Rose and Grant Kemp III; sister, Sharon (Pohl) Lentz; aunt, Alice Knox; and brothers-in-law, Richard Stevens, and Rick Lentz.

Roseanna B. Tait, 85

Belmont, NY - Roseanna B. Tait, 85, of 85 South Street, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2021 at Jones Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. She was born October 4, 1935 in Belmont, the daughter of the late Carlo P. and Violet (Lewis) Biancuzzo. On September 10, 1955 in Wellsville she married Lawrence Tait, who predeceased her on October 6, 2005. 

She was raised in Belmont, graduated from Belmont Central School, and attended Bryant and Stratton Business Institute. She was formerly employed at Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation for 41 years, retiring in 1994. 

She is survived by: two sisters, Josephine and Felecia Biancuzzo of Belmont; a sister-in-law Deborah Biancuzzo of Wellsville, several nieces and nephews including, Catherine (K.J.) Spinks, Stephen (Lynn) Biancuzzo, Daniel Biancuzzo and Andrew (Adriane) Biancuzzo; two great-nieces, Andrea (Jeremy) Niece, and Alyssa (Brent) Cox; four great-nephews, Vinson Biancuzzo, Tobias and Joshua Spinks, and Parker Biancuzzo, several great-great nieces and nephews, several cousins; and special friends, John & Joan Rahr, Michael Whitney, and Richard Rahr.

Betty (Eaton) Carroll, 89

Millport, PA - Betty (Eaton) Carroll, 89, of Eleven Mile Road, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at the UPC Charles Cole Hospital in Coudersport, PA. Betty was born at home in Genesee, PA, on June 30, 1931, the daughter of the late Elwin “Avery” and Zelma (Kuhn) Eaton. On October 16, 1951, in Sacred Heart Church of Genesee PA, she married, her husband of sixty-six years, Robert Carroll who survives.

She was a 1950 graduate from the former Genesee High School. She worked for a time at the J.J. Newberrys in Wellsville, before becoming a full-time mother. She was a member of St. Theresa's in Shinglehouse and attended mass at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville. She enjoyed sewing, traveling, camping, and family. She will be remembered for her quilt and doll making. 

Surviving, in addition to her husband Robert, are: two daughters, Ann (Steven Lee) Carroll-Lee of Webster and Nancy (Bob) Weber of Coudersport; 2 granddaughters, Kim (Jeremy) Grossman of Gaines, PA, and Janel (Jay) Wilcox of Sykesville, MD; 2 great-grandchildren, Cole and Reed Grossman; a sister, Marjorie Guido; a sister-in-law, Audry Eaton; a brother-in-law, Max Stuckey; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was predeceased in addition to her parents, by: three sisters, Pearl Baldwin, Gertrude Dunham, and Genieve Stuckey; and four brothers, Leo Eaton, Clifton Eaton, Elwin Eaton, and Richard Eaton.

Burton D. “Burt” Evans

Wellsville, NY - Burton D. “Burt” Evans passed away on Friday, February 26, 2021 into the loving arms of his savior Jesus Christ at Highland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born in Canisteo, the son of the late Floyd E. and Mona (Northrup) Ashbaugh and stepfather Lawrence W. Ashbaugh. On January 15, 1966 in Webster, he married Sharon Northup who predeceased him on November 11, 2020.

Burt was raised in Canisteo and was a graduate of Canisteo Central School. He was formerly employed by Air Vent Aluminum in Arkport and was a self-employed contractor. In 1969 he was hired by Alfred State College, School of Vocational Studies in Wellsville, as a Professor of Building Trades until his retirement in 2002. He oversaw the building of many of the houses in Stannards and Wellsville. He also did many community services projects through Alfred State College in Belmont, Alfred, Wellsville and beyond.

In 1980, he moved to Wellsville where he was an active member of the Riverside Assembly of God. Burt served as a board member, elder and Sunday School teacher and oversaw the addition of the church in 1985. He loved woodworking and making crafts for friends and family. Burt’s solace was in his wood shop. He would go there to do projects and as a means of “therapy” as he loved to be busy. Burt’s workshop was his creative place. He built his own home after a house fire in 1994. He was so proud of the home he built for his family. He never met a stranger and had many friends and acquaintances. He loved to take his wife on long rides around the countryside to look at the sites. He also enjoyed going to Burger King and McDonald’s to meet friends for lunch.

If there was anything he wanted everyone to know is to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. He encouraged everyone to look to the Bible for guidance on their life. He was a loving husband, father and friend and always had a kind word for everyone. He will be remembered as a man of God. He will be missed dearly as his life exemplified Jesus and Jesus was his life.

He is survived by a daughter Susan Evans of Geneseo, an older brother and sister as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by his wife, and daughter.
