Dana R.”Ronnie” Pickup, Jr.



Venice, FL and Wellsville, NY - Dana R.”Ronnie” Pickup, Jr., 73, of Wellsville, NY and Venice, FL, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at Transitions Hospice Home in Raleigh, NC. He was surrounded by his family as his battle with multiple myeloma came to a peaceful conclusion. He was born February 7, 1943 in Savannah, GA, the son of the late Dana R. and Elizabeth (Jenks) Pickup.


Dana graduated from Wellsville High School 1961, lettering in three sports and serving as student council president his senior year.  A star quarterback in high school, he went on to play for the Penn State Nittany Lions, playing in the Gator Bowl in 1962.  While at Penn State, he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, during which time he established many lifelong bonds with friends that continue to this day.  In 1966 he earned an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, after which time he served with the U. S. Army in Korea.

After his return from overseas duty, he practiced as a Certified Public Accountant at his father’s family business in Wellsville. In 1980, he purchased Cuba Specialty Manufacturing Company of Fillmore, NY, a maker of minnow traps and other fishing tackle equipment.  He successfully ran and expanded the business until his retirement.  He served as president of the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association, an industry trade organization, from 1989-1990.  During his tenure, he had the opportunity to host a fishing trip with President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush at the Grand Teton National Park.  He also served on the President’s Advisory Board at Houghton College in Allegany County.

As a youth, he spent summers at Brentwood Camp, eventually serving as a counselor, and continued to support the camp for years after. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, golf, and was an avid hot air balloonist, piloting the Bloody Mary balloon over the skies of western New York.  He was a member of the Jaycees in Wellsville and enjoyed hosting clam bakes and organizing road rallies. He was a Rotarian and a member of the Wellsville Elks Lodge. He had a strong faith and was a member of the Englewood United Methodist Church in Englewood, FL and the Presbyterian Church of Wellsville in Wellsville, NY.

Dana is survived by his wife Patti, his brother Bob and sister in law Linda of Gulfport, FL, son and daughter-in-law, Lance and Tresa Pickup of Raleigh, NC, daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Jimmy Leonida of Raleigh, NC, daughter and son-in-law Danielle and John Quiocho of Cary, NC, step-son and daughter-in-law Todd and Christy Willard of Greenville, DE, step-daughter Brittany Willard of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, grandchildren Alec and Collin Pickup, Kieron and Kennedy Leonida, Cooper and Maximilian Quiocho, Jack and Grace Willard, his goddaughter Caitlain Lewis Clary as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Maureen D. Nagle

Wellsville, NY - Maureen D. Nagle, 90, a longtime resident of Wellsville, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Manor Hills. She was born August 27, 1925 in Bolivar, the daughter of the late John P. and Elizabeth (Crelly) Dougherty. On October 15, 1947 in Bolivar she married William W. Nagle who predeceased her April 22, 2004.

Maureen was raised in Bolivar and was a 1943 graduate of Bolivar High School. She was a Cadet Nurse and trained as a Registered Nurse at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, while attending Canisius College. She was employed as a nurse in Olean, Wellsville, Buffalo, and was particularly proud of her service to the V.A. Hospital in the Bronx during WWII. She was the first woman in 45 years to hold public office in Bolivar, as a Trustee on the Village Board. 

She is survived by four daughters, Crelly A. Nagle of Atlanta, GA, Mary John Nagle of Buffalo, Deirdre E. (Thomas) McElroy of Port Royal, PA and Maureen S. (Gary) Pickett of Atlanta, GA, three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, John F. and Richard A. Dougherty and one sister, Elizabeth Kornreich.

David M. Clark

Wellsville, NY - David M. Clark, 64, formerly of South Brooklyn Avenue, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Geneva General Hospital following a long illness. He was born March 5, 1952 in Wellsville, the son of the late Wesley and Rosemary (Gibalski) Clark.

Dave was raised in Wellsville and graduated from the Immaculate Conception School, Wellsville High School in 1970 and Corning Community College. He was formerly employed at Metalade in Rochester and was an over the road truck drive for many years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and volunteered at the Catholic Charities Food Pantry in Wellsville.

He is survived by a daughter, Kelsey Clark of Wayland, two sisters, Rosemary Hurd of Wellsville and Kelley (Fred) Rowan of Henrietta, and one brother, Stephen (Donna) Clark of Dansville, four nieces & nephews, Andrew Hurd, Rosemary Hurd, Kathryn Rowan and Kevin Rowan, two great nephews, an aunt, Jane Parker of Wellsville and many cousins.

Mary Agnes Sullivan

Wellsville, NY - Mary Agnes Sullivan, 89, of 4192 A Bolivar Road, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born September 8, 1926 in Wellsville, the daughter of the late Henry Joseph and Agnes (Forhan) Sullivan.

Mary Agnes taught English at Andover High School for many years. She was an avid golfer and member of the Wellsville County Club, where she was Club Champion multiple times. She also enjoyed playing Bridge, bowling and was a dedicated volunteer for the American Red Cross.  Mary Agnes attended grammar school in Mexico, and High School in Cuba. She and her family returned to Wellsville when her father retired in the mid 1950’s.

She is survived by several nieces and Nephews, Kathi Sullivan and her husband Richard Nuanes, Timothy Sullivan and his wife Martha, Matthew Sullivan and his wife Susan, Peter Sullivan, John Sullivan and his wife Delissa, Maureen Egen and her husband David, Kathleen Doyle and her husband Richard Bavitch, Patricia Mahon and her husband Thomas Hayden, Gigi Mahon, Jim Mahon and his wife Katie, and Harry Mahon and his wife, Twig Murray, along with numerous grand nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased in addition to her parents by a sister, Monica Mahon and a brother, Henry J. Sullivan.

Marie-Therese “Miette” Forhan

Wellsville, NY - Marie-Therese “Miette” Forhan, 95, of 5 Meadowbrook Court, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Jones Memorial Hospital with friends and family at her side. She was born March 21, 1921 in Lyon, France, the daughter of Marius and Margaruite Fournier-Perrin. On July 21, 1947 she married Eugene Timothy Forhan at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, who predeceased her on April 15, 1996.

Miette is survived by five children, Michael Forhan and his wife Karen of Baldwinsville, NY, Anne Andrianos and her husband Daniel of Syracuse, NY, Timothy Forhan and his wife Sheri of Pocatello, ID, Paul Forhan and his wife Ivelisse of Yorktown Heights, NY and Michelle Raptis and her husband Michael of Wellsville, 16 grandchildren, a great grandson, a niece, Cecile Scheurer and a great niece, Stephane Scheurer of St. Julien and Seysell, France respectively.

Miette was raised in a small village like Wellsville, called Seysell, in the Rhone Alps region of France, on the banks of the Rhone River. Like the Genesee, the Rhone flows thought the heart of Seysell.  She met Gene at a tea, arranged by her mother, for the officers of the U.S. Army Air Corps during the liberation of France. A War Bride, she arrived in New York City on June 30, 1947. 

A woman of high principles and great faith, she viewed motherhood as her sacred mission. She was a fearlessly devoted spouse and she instilled lasting values in her children. Her unwavering message was,”Love One Another” and “Forgive, Forget and Accept.” She brought the gift of French cuisine to Wellsville, to the delight of her family friends and neighbors. She was a nurse’s aide, who assisted many local families as a private duty nurse. She was an active volunteer as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout leader. After Gene retired from First Trust Union Bank, they moved to Bemus Point, where she founded an Alzheimer support group in Chautauqua County. She and Gene returned to Wellsville in 1988, and after Gene suffered a stroke in 1990, Miette cared for him tirelessly for six years. Miette was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church and a generous supporter of Catholic education.

James P. Denning

Wellsville, NY - James P. Denning, 53 of 1060 Madison Street passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, May 8, 2016. He was born July 27, 1962 in Wellsville, the son of the late Robert and Beverly (Cole) Denning. James was raised in Bolivar and attended Bolivar High School. He was formerly employed at Wendy’s in Olean and did odd jobs in the Wellsville area.

He is survived by two sisters, Karen (John Ferrio) Denning of Cuba and Julie Denning of Hornell, three brothers, Terry (Ginny) Denning of Mississippi, Steve (Cindy) Denning of North Carolina and Jeff (Kim) Denning of Florida, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robbie Denning.

Dennis A. Mills

Rochester, NY - Dennis A. Mills, 51, formerly of Wellsville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 16, 2016 after a long illness at Unity Hospital in Rochester.  He was born November 8, 1964 in Wellsville to David C. and Constance (Allen) Mills.  Known to most as “Denny”, he was a loving husband, son, father and brother.  He enjoyed the outdoors immensely and was an avid hunter and fisherman, and every spring you could find him somewhere in the woods picking leeks with his family.

 He is survived by his loving wife, Christine, his parents Dave and Connie Mills of Wellsville, his son and future daughter-in-law Kyle Mills (Kristen Perkins) of Wellsville, his daughter Morgan Mills of Ulysses, PA, his sister and brother-in-law Debora and James Richardson of Wellsville, his brother and sister-in-law Dale and Kathy Mills of Fort Edward, his stepchildren Andrea Blitzer, Joanie and Matt Bennett and Nicole Probst, his nieces Brandi, Mackenzie and Jennifer and his nephew Steven.

 Memorials can be made in his name to the Allegany County SPCA, 1374 State Route 19 South, Wellsville, NY 14895 or to the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation, P.O. Box 1337, Midlothian, TX 76065.  Although Denny was not a veteran, he was touched by the men and women who served our country and came home disabled only to be helped by this foundation.

 Denny, even though you are gone from this Earth, we know you fly with the angels and you will always be loved.

 A private graveside service in Woodlawn Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.

Teresa Ann (Basso) Clark

Vernon, CT - Teresa Ann (Basso) Clark, 87, formerly of Wellsville, NY, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Nora’s Place in Vernon, CT.  She was born May 11, 1929 in Binghamton, NY, The daughter of Robert Charles and Genevieve Sylvia (Warner) Basso.  On June 17, 1950, she married Norman Dutton Clark, who passed away in 1987.

Terry graduated from Binghamton Central High School in 1947.  She attended Alfred University, where she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, until her marriage.

Terry and Norm raised their two daughters in Wellsville. Terry was an active volunteer at Immaculate Conception Church and School and served as a Girl Scout leader.  An accomplished seamstress, she created fashionable ensembles for her daughters and herself.

 With Norm’s encouragement, Terry returned to Alfred University in 1968 and graduated cum laude with a BS in Education in 1970.  She began teaching special education at Wellsville High School in 1970.  At the same time, she pursued graduate studies at SUNY Geneseo.  Terry continued to teach at B. O. C. E. S. in Belmont until her retirement.  She was an ardent advocate for children with special needs.  She helped to organize Special Olympics and Special Arts Festival in Allegany County.

Following retirement, Terry devoted herself to volunteering in the community.  She taught reading at Immaculate Conception School, baked blackberry pies for the Fun Fair and served as a hospice volunteer.  She was a dedicated Mercy Associate.

Terry embraced high principals in all areas of life.  She was passionate about her faith and had a rich prayer life.
She had a keen sense of social justice and was known to be outspoken on current events.  She strove to be selfless in fulfilling her roles as wife, mother and teacher. Plus, she always looked great.

Norm was proud of his intelligent wife.  He let her do most of the talking.  They enjoyed camping, working on their cabin and playing bridge together. 

Terry maintained a close relationship with her younger sister Jean.   They hunted for bargains and shared the labor of elaborate holiday traditions.  The younger generation had trouble keeping up with them.

In addition to her husband, Terry was pre-deceased by her sister and brother-in-law Jean and Jack Carpenter.  Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law:  Jo-Ann and Patrick Pugh of Vernon, CT and Margaret and David Ellis of Temple, ME., grandchildren Renee and Michael Washburn of Vernon, CT, Gregory Pugh and fiancĂ©e Jessica Davis of Omaha, NE and Andrew Ellis of Temple, ME.  She had one great-grandson, Jonah Washburn of Vernon, CT.  In addition, she had two nieces, one nephew and four great-nieces.

George Max Knapp

Wellsville, NY - George Max Knapp, age 96, of the Fords Brook North Branch passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on November 22, 1919 in Findlay Ohio to George Harrison and Lois May Stanton Knapp. On May 29, 1939 he married Virginia Ruth Baxter who predeceased him on February 10, 1998.

Max was a dairy farmer all of his life working in several towns until he purchased his own farm on Meservey Hill in Wellsville. He was involved in many organizations that pertained to farming, such as a member of the executive board of the County Extension Service; a director of Millport Milk Producers Cooperative at Syracuse; past committeeman and secretary and treasurer for the Artificial Breeders Association; a member and chairman of the G.L.F. Agway Committee; a member of the Allegany County Stabilization Committee and was on the high school agricultural Advisory Committee. Max felt that there should be a school board member from the outlying areas so he ran for a school board seat and won. He went on to serve the Wellsville School Board for many years and eventually he became president of the board. Max was an avid reader who had read every volume of the Book of Knowledge while attending a one room schoolhouse near Belmont. He loved to watch sports on TV, especially the New York Yankees, and enjoyed dancing. Max was a member of the Senior Sunshine Club and the Riverside Assembly of God Church of Wellsville.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry (Deloris) Knapp of Wellsville and Stephen Knapp of Surprise, AZ.; two daughters, Judith Marie Mellor of Sun City Center, FL., and Kathryn (John) Trisket of Ashville; 11 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; longtime friend and dancing partner Joan Watson.

Max was predeceased by his parents; his wife Virginia Ruth; his grandson Mark E. Trisket; his two brothers, William and Karl Knapp; his five sisters, Margarite Putney, Mayra Bigelow, Jane Maxine Francisco, Dorothy Freed and Mary Jordan;

Friends are invited to call on Wednesday, May 11, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Riverside Assembly of God Church on Riverside Drive. His funeral service will be held on Thursday in Church at 2 pm with Reverends John and Fred Francisco presiding. William Parker Leilous



Wellsville, NY - William Parker Leilous, age 75, of Fairview Avenue passed away unexpectedly on May 7, 2016. William “Bill” was born on August 28, 1940, in Wellsville to Harold “Red” Leilous and Helen Leilous.


Bill graduated from Belmont Central School in 1958 and attended the University of Buffalo. He served in the US Army and the National Guard from 1960-1966. Bill owned and operated Eastside Garage in Belmont for many years before becoming a loan officer and branch manager for Fleet Bank at several locations throughout the county. Bill thoroughly enjoyed his retirement and making Florida his winter home. Throughout his life Bill was a member of many philanthropic organizations. He joined the Belmont Masonic Lodge in 1965, 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and he was an active member of the Ismalia Shrine. Bill was also a life member of the Belmont Fire Department, Belmont and Wellsville Rotary, the American Legion, and the Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Jubilee Fellowship Church in Naples, Florida.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; his three children, Patty(Mike)Ferguson of Henrietta, Jeffrey(Kelly Harvey) of Springville, Michele(Dana)Cline of Fort Myers, Florida, and Ann Hotchkiss of Springville; his ten grandchildren, Jennifer(Billy)Massett, Jarrod(Aaron McMahon) Ferguson, Caitlyn Hotchkiss, Lindsey Hotchkiss, Jessica(Logan) Kerr, Meghan Hotchkiss, Alexis Cline, Joshua Cline, Kaleb Cline, and Nicholas Cline; two great grandchildren, Ethan and Ellie Massett.

Lynnet Dodson Witherell

Wellsville, NY - Lynnet Dodson Witherell, age 67, of Seneca Street passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at the Highland Health Care Center in Wellsville. She was born on March 26, 1949 in Cuba to LeRoy and Beatrice Leal Dodson.

Lynnet was a member of the Wellsville High School Class of 1967. She attended Corning Community College and graduated from the Alfred State College Nursing program in 1991. She began working for Jones Memorial Hospital as a Ward Clerk and worked part time for Doctor Salmon. She began her nursing career at Jones Memorial Hospital in 1991 as an RN. Lynnet later moved to Albany to take the position of Quality Control Manager at the Albany Trauma Center. In the mid 1990’s she became the Infection Control Officer at Ira Davenport Hospital in Bath and retired in 2012 from the CSEA as an OSHA Specialist in Syracuse. Lynnet maintained her seat on the NYS Board of Health until early in 2015. She was very talented and enjoyed playing the piano, singing, drawing, sketching and taking pictures of her family. Lynnet also enjoyed knitting, sewing and crocheting donating many items to the maternity ward at Jones Memorial Hospital. Lynnet enjoyed traveling, taking vacations, beaches, canoeing, kayaking, merry go round horses and listening to Barbara Streisand. 

Lynnet is survived by two daughters, Jennifer (Greg) Teeter of Elba and Michelle (William) Day Jr of Wellsville; a son, Brian Witherell of Prattsburgh; 14 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; an uncle; 4 nephews; several cousins; her close friends, Dianna Fleming and Debbie Buchholz.

Lynnet was predeceased by her parents; her two sisters, Phyllis Piraino and Mary Jane Dodson; a nephew, Ross Piraino.

Mary E. Jordan

Belmont, NY - Mary E. Jordan, age 87, of Greenwich Street passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at the Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. She was born on February 2, 1929 in Findlay, Ohio to George H. and Lois Stanton Knapp. On June 25, 1950 in Belmont she married John C. Jordan who predeceased her on December 28, 1985.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Belmont who attended a one room school house near Feathers Creek Road and graduated from Belmont Central High School. She later attended a beautician school in Buffalo and worked from her home as a hairdresser. Mary was active in her community and had been the town historian, tax assessor, and until 2012 worked for the Allegany County Board of Elections. Mary was an avid outdoors woman who grew up on a farm. She loved riding horses and rode them well into her 70’s and had the opportunity to ride once again last year at the Garlic Festival in Cuba. She also enjoyed bird watching and tending her gardens. Mary’s memberships include the American Legion Auxiliary, Allegany County Bird Watchers Club, Republican Women’s Club, and the United Church of Belmont.

Survivors include her son Jeffery Jordan of Belmont; her daughter Marilyn Jordan of Johnson City; 3 grandsons, Jonathan (Jen) Paxhia, Anthony (Sarah) Paxhia and William Jordan; a great grandson, Jake; a brother, George “Max” Knapp; several nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her four sisters, Margarite, Dorothy, Myra and Jane; two brothers, Bill and Carl.

Maeneen Ann Dwyer Hendrick

Wellsville, NY - Maeneen Ann Dwyer Hendrick, a long time resident of Breckenridge Avenue, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, April 29, 2016 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center.

Maeneen came into this world as the New Year’s baby in 1939. Born to Robert and Mary Aide (Mendonsa) Dwyer at Jones Memorial Hospital, she would live her entire life in Wellsville. Maeneen attended Immaculate Conception School and Wellsville High School, where she was a member of the class of 1957. After a short career in banking, Maeneen started her family in 1961 with the birth of Lori Ann. Eventually three more children were added to the family: Linda, James and Brian. In addition to raising her four kids, Maeneen also worked to make ends meet by providing daycare to many families across Wellsville. She volunteered for various causes, although she most passionately worked on behalf of the Fresh Air Fund, every summer bringing hundreds of underprivileged NYC kids to Wellsville and Allegany County to enjoy a country vacation. Later in life Maeneen enjoyed her role as beloved grandmother to Joseph and Katharyn Tronetti.

Maeneen is survived by her Children; Lori Ann Hendrick, Linda (Michael) Tronetti, James (Christine) Hendrick, and Brian (Heidi) Hendrick, and two grandchildren: Joseph and Katharyn Tronetti as well as many longtime friends including Pierre and Ramona Akpo-Sani.

Maeneen was predeceased by her parents, her sister Kathleen Dwyer Marble on April 14, 2016 and her aunt, Roberta ”Bobbie” Mendonsa.

Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life Memorial Mass on Friday, May 6, 2016, at 11 am in the Immaculate Conception Church on Maple Avenue in Wellsville. Maeneen will be buried with her parents in Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her memory to either the Immaculate Conception School or to the Fresh Air Fund at freshair.org.
