Pauline J. Morrison


Wellsville, NY - Pauline J. Morrison of Merriam Heights passed away on Monday, April 30, 2012, at the Hart Comfort House in Wellsville. She was born on February 26, 1936 in Edinburgh Scotland to John Frederick and Mary Phillipa (Kelly) Johnston. On December 6, 1958 in Wellsville she married Andrew Morrison who predeceased her on October 11, 2006.

Pauline was born in Edinburgh Scotland where studied dance and was a local ping pong champion. In 1958 she immigrated to Canada where she met her husband Andrew Morrison while he served with the U S Navy. Pauline was a long time bank employee in Wellsville starting with the former Citizens National Bank then with Key Bank and retired from Community Bank in 2003.She held many positions starting as the switchboard operator and retiring as the secretary in the loan department. During her tenure at the bank her upbeat and Scottish brogue made her a familiar friendly voice in town. After retirement she was an active volunteer at the Wellsville Manor Nursing Home and at Jones Memorial Hospital. Pauline's spirit of giving and undying optimism was an inspiration to those that knew her.

Survivors include: a son, Andrew (Wilma) Morrison Jr. of Mansfield, MA.; a daughter, Doreen (John) Richardson of Mt. Juliet, TN.; 2 sisters, Dorothy Johnston-Kay of Toronto, Canada and Phillipa Johnston of Paris France; 3 grandchildren, Rachael, Wendy and Zachary; 17 nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Franklin Johnston.

James E. "ED" Veley


Phillips Creek/Belmont, NY - James E. "ED" Veley of State Route 244 passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at the Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. He was born on September 2, 1953 in Wellsville to Peter and Shirley (Gardner) Veley. In February of 1977 in Florida he married Sandra Denning who survives.

Ed was a mechanic for Wes Cline in Belmont and later for R&R Trucking in Friendship. He enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting, fishing and camping. Ed liked to attend truck and tractor pulls and split fire wood for his neighbors and family. Ed especially enjoyed spending time with his family and he attended the Phillips Creek Mennonite Church.

Surviving besides his wife: 2 sons, William (Pam) Denning of Dansville and Frank Denning of Clarendon; 2 daughters, Crystal (Don) Halbert of Angelica and Kim Veley of Angelica; eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Gary, Bob and Ricky Veley; 3 sisters, Cheryl Weight, Debbie Zippido and Jane Speta; several nieces and nephews.

Ed was predeceased by a brother Lee Veley.

Ralph Duncan Taggart


Wellsville, NY - Ralph Duncan Taggart, 99, a Wellsville resident since about 1939 passed on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born February 8, 1913 in the town of Willis on Long Island to James Moses and Fanny (Day) Taggart.

With his younger brother, David, he was raised in Port Washington, New York, where he spent his youth canoeing, swimming, camping, and ice skating around the Long Island Sound area. He attended Michigan State College in Grand Rapids, living with his uncle Ganson Taggart. During the great depression he was forced to leave school for a year when the banks closed. He joined the CCC and worked planting trees. He graduated with an engineering degree and was hired by Worthington Corporation in Wellsville. He continued in the same employment until retirement. He joined the Wellsville United Methodist Church and met his wife, Eleanor Josephine Marsh through members of the church. She predeceased him in September of 1993.

They made their home at 140 Pine Street, Wellsville and raised three children- Marsha Jean Taggart-Francis, Linda Joy Taggart-Mendelsohn, and Wayne Duncan Taggart. He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman, taking walks early in the morning. He was known in Wellsville as the man who rides his bike to work and around town. He was an avid tennis player, playing with his father and friends on his father's clay court. In Wellsville he played soft ball in the church league. At age 93 he was roofing and painting the house. After his wife's death, he traveled with Marsha and her young children to Maine, Ohio, Florida, and South Carolina vacationing, and visiting family and his childhood home. He will be missed by his Family. He lived a full and active life and provided well for his family.

Plans are being made for a memorial service at the Wellsville United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 26, 2012 followed by a dinner for all family and friends. Wilma W. Swarthout


Wellsville, NY - Wilma W. Swarthout, 82, 5 Fairview Avenue passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Olean General Hospital following a courageous battle with many health issues.  She was born April 10, 1930 in Wellsville the daughter of the late Edward and Pearl (Willett) Whitney. On March 10, 1953 in Wellsville she married James L. Swarthout who survives. 

Wilma was a 1947 graduate of Wellsville High School. She was first employed at Silvers Clothing Store and later by Worthington Corporation as Manager of the Tabulation Room. After the birth of her daughter she returned to work at First Trust Union Bank and Kailbourn Supply in Wellsville as a secretary and bookkeeper. She was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed family gatherings, playing the piano, traveling, and the joy of winning at bingo and at the casino.   

Surviving in addition to her devoted husband is a loving daughter, Wendy (Jeff) Barrett of Old Orchard Beach, ME, 2 sisters, Gayle (Jim) Schober of North Tonawanda, NY and Reba (Tony) Vassallo of Circleville, OH, two sister-in-laws, Doris (Floyd) Mallory of Wellsville and Carolyn Huffsteader of Blairsville, GA. Also surviving is the 1st niece, Terry Benedict of Wellsville as well as many other nieces, nephews and special friends, including, Bunny Rahr and Phyllis Marrow both of California. She was predeceased by two brothers, Donald Whitney and Leonard Whitney and a sister-in-law, June Gensamer.

Karlton August Brandes


Wellsville, NY - Karlton August Brandes, 77, of 4217 Fassett Lane passed away at home on April 18, 2012. He was born April 23, 1934 in Wellsville the son of the late Karl and Evelyn (Neu) Brandes. On August 26, 1961 in Wellsville he married Joanne Herman who survives.

In 1953, Karlton graduated from Wellsville High School and was awarded the FFA Farmer of the Year. In 1982 he received the Allegany County Soil and Water Conservation District Farmer of the Year Award, and in 1983 he received the Goodyear Conservation award for outstanding
accomplishments in resource conservation. He also served as a committeeman for Agway and Dairylea, and was active in several other farm organizations.  His partners in life and farming were his Lord and Savior, his wife and their sons. He operated a dairy farm until his barn burned, and then he raised beef cattle. For several years he was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church; where he lovingly and joyfully served his Lord in various capacities. He always had a humorous story for any occasion and enjoyed the camaraderie of his monthly pinochle club. Karlton and his wife enjoyed camping, hiking, biking and canoeing.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 50 years, are his children and grandchildren, Mark and Sheila (Garvey) Brandes of Orlando, FL, Paul and Claudia (Bashaar) Brandes and their children Morgan, Cassidy, Hannah and Ava Marie of Waynesboro, PA, Christopher and Tamara (Hile) Brandes and their children, Emily and Evelyn of Sebastian, FL and Jonathan and Lori (Cole) Brandes and their children Teagin and Tiernee of Wellsville. He is also survived by his sister, Kathryn and Arnold Wienk of Sergeantsville, NJ and a brother-in-law, Bruce and Betty Herman of Spring Hill, FL, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, including Tim and Penny McKee of Wellsville. He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, James Herman and a sister-in-law, Janet Herman Lang.

Diana L. Button


Belmont, NY - Diana L. Button, 95, of 5118 State Route 244 passed away on Monday, April 16, 2012 at Highland Park Health Center in Wellsville. She was born July 15, 1916 in the Town of Independence, the daughter of Lee and Nora (Barney) Heselton. On June 12, 1943 in Nile she married Paul E. Button who predeceased her on September 21, 1975. 

Diana was a 1933 graduate of Whitesville High School and a 1942 graduate of the Rochester Business Institute in Wellsville. She was employed at Belmont Quadrangle in Wellsville prior to her marriage. She later was the bookkeeper for her husband's various businesses. 

She is survived by two children, Patsy Button of Belmont and Daniel (Mary Kay) Button of New London, NH, six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two children, Paula O'Hare and Ralph Button and one sister, Marian Losey.

Clifford L. Brown


Milton, FL - Clifford L. Brown, 89, of Milton FL and Wellsville NY, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2012 at the home of his granddaughter, Marlene and her partner Thomas Downs. Cliff had been staying in Milton for the past few years, succumbing to the complications of prostate cancer.

He was born February 14, 1923 in Freemont NY, to the late Albert and Catherine (Brown) Brown. He was an honorary graduate of Andover Central School. A lifelong resident of Western New York, Cliff was raised by his older sister, Lillian Carlin. He worked on area farms from the age of seven, to help support the family. Cliff served in the US Army Aircorp, 394th Bomb Squadron as an Airplane Armorer Gunner in the East Indies, New Guinea and the Southern Philippines. Cliff worked in the local oil fields for Bradley Producing Corporation for over 25 years. When Bradley's cut back oil production, he attended Man Power Training, becoming a welder. He worked at Air Preheater for twenty years, first on the floor, then in the welding lab, followed by years of travel for Air Preheater. 

Some things you might not have known about Cliff: he was a competitive archer, traveling weekends with his brother Al, competing in archery tournaments all over NY and northern PA. Cliff had dozens of trophies and medals for his first place finishes. He crafted his own arrows, which he used in competition and for hunting. An avid hunter, he successfully bagged deer using bow and arrow, shotgun and black powder. His family benefitted from his marksmanship, enjoying all types of small and large game. He reloaded his own shells and was a gun collector. He made his own patterns, once making a buck skin shirt out of one of his deer hides. All the children wore that shirt more than once!! It was beautiful! After retirement, he became an accomplished golfer. A self taught jeweler, he made many, many beautiful pieces for those he loved. His soldering ability remains a marvel. Cliff really disliked his middle name-many discussions revolved around this!!

On July 16, 1942, he married Evelyn (Pat) Stocum, who predeceased him. They were married for 53 years, prior to her passing October 28, 1994. Cliff and Pat had children living in their home 49 of the 53 years of their married life.  Cliff was predeceased by his parents, a son, Scott in 1992; his brothers, Donald and Albert; sisters, Lillian Carlin, Bertha Stephens.

Cliff is survived by his children: Clifford "Sandy" (Betty Ann) Brown of NC; Catherine (Robert) Phelps of Florida; Pamela (Michael) Iven of Cape Cod. Cliff is also survived by the three grand children that he and Pat raised: Marlene Elliott Brown of Florida, with whom he was living; Robert (Cheri) Elliott of Florida, and Bryan (Jill) Elliott of England. Cliff is also survived by a total of nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Harold F. Brown Jr

Wellsville, NY - Harold F. Brown Jr. of the Stannards Road passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the Buffalo VA Center. He was born on January 18, 1935 in Wellsville to Harold F. and Helen Ruth (Willard) Brown Sr. On October 7, 1955 in Wellsville he married Louise E. LaPolt who survives.

Harold was a long time resident of Wellsville who served in the US Air Force from 1955 till 1959 as a Staff Sergeant. He worked for 33 years at Acme Electric from where he retired in 1999. Harold was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wellsville, The University Lodge number 230 of the Free and Accepted Masons, The Royal Arch Masons Lodge number 143 and the American Legion Post 702. After his retirement he and Louise enjoyed to travel. They traveled with their camper to 46 of the lower 48 states, enjoyed two trips to Alaska and a trip to England and Scotland. Harold was an avid outdoorsman who liked to hunt and fish. He especially enjoyed fly fishing in the Genesee River. After returning to Wellsville he built his own work shop next to his home and became known to his neighbors as someone who was always available to help build or repair most anything. He will be remembered to many as a world class handyman.

Surviving besides his wife Louise: a son, Todd F. (Marylise) Brown of Virginia Beach, VA.; a grandson, William Brown of Virginia Beach, VA.; 3 sisters, Kathi Twombly of Danbury CT., Susan Willard of Olean and Dorothy (Robert) Gibson of Hornell; several nieces and nephews.

Patricia "Pat" (Piper) Gleason


Patricia "Pat" (Piper) Gleason of Crossville, TN, formerly of Wellsville, NY, passed away on April 13, 2012 at Vanderbilt Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born on March 8, 1943 to Howard and Althea Dyson Piper in Philadelphia, PA. She married Daniel Gleason on September 6, 1962 in Olean, NY. After attending Alfred State University and becoming a New York State-certified substance abuse counselor, she served as director of counseling at Allegany County Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse (ACASA) and later at Employee Services, Inc. Pat loved animals and enjoyed horticulture and bird watching. She was an accomplished knitter and quilter who won numerous craft accolades.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Gleason, her son, Lance Gleason, her daughter-in-law Marlene Jaeckel, her brother Christopher Piper, her sister Sandra (Charles) Baker, her son-in-law Steven Frungillo, her grandchildren Amanda (Brian) Preston and Steven Frungillo, and her great-grandchildren Collin and Ben Preston. She is also survived by her brother-in-law William (Beverly) Gleason, her sister-in-law Jane (Daniel) Hartman, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Melinda Frungillo.

William R. "Bill" Nelson


Wellsville, NY - William R. "Bill" Nelson, 86, of 4192B Bolivar Road died Monday, April 9, 2012 at Jones Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born December 24, 1925 in Lackawanna and was raised at Father Baker's Home. He served with the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was employed as a counselor at Father's Baker's in Lackawanna and later at Republic Steel in South Buffalo. He will be remembered as an accomplished harmonica player by his many friends at Manor Hills, where he would often play for birthdays and special occasions. He had a wonderful sense of humor and related several personal stories about Father Baker and the Sisters at Our Lady of Victory.

Carole L. Carlin

Wellsville, NY - Carole L. Carlin, 76, of 2398 Stannards Road died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born June 27, 1935 in Wellsville the daughter of the late Glenn and Mildred (Etsler) Hazzard. On June 11, 1955 in Wellsville she married James F. Carlin who predeceased her on September 21, 2011.

Carole was raised in Wellsville and was graduate of the Immaculate Conception School in 1952 and Wellsville High School in 1954. She was active member of the Immaculate Conception Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the Mercy Associates, the Fun Fair committee and volunteered at the Immaculate Conception School for many years.

She is survived by two sons, David (Rosalina) Carlin of Las Vegas, NV and Timothy (Judy) Carlin of Wellsville, two daughters, Cynthia Carlin and Kathleen (C. J.) Rahr, both of Wellsville, 11 grandchildren, one sister, Gayle Bernard of Ashville, NY, as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her husband by a son, Brian G. Carlin on July 3, 2000 and a sister, Sally Day in 2010.

Dorothy Brown Stoll

Scio, NY - Dorothy Brown Stoll, 95, of 3965 Church Street passed away Wednesday, April 04, 2012 at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville following a brief illness. She was born November 9, 1916 in Wellsville the daughter of Glenn E. and Freelove (Stonham) Brown. She was married to Howard T. Stoll who predeceased her March 27, 1983.

Dorothy was known by many as a terrific waitress and cook in Wellsville at both the Modern Diner and Long View Restaurant. After WW II she was employed by the Button Factory in Wellsville and later for Bausch & Lomb in Wellsville and Motorola in Arcade. She also provided home health care for several families in the area. Her favorite pastime was being with her grandchildren and teaching them card games. Dot enjoyed hosting Bible studies in her home and will be long remembered for her delicious pies.

She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Blackman, Rita Borne and Linda (Dwight) Fanton all of Wellsville, one son, Thomas (Betty) Stoll of Wellsville, nine grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, four sisters, Hazel Ingalls of Wellsville, Carole (James) Meyer of Rochester, Glenda (William) McKelvey of Belfast, Bonnie Starks of Olean, her step-mother, Rose Brown of Cuba as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Brown, two sisters, Margaret Sweet and Helen Brundage, a son-in-law, Ralph Blackman and two beloved great grandchildren, Todd Stoll and Logan Culver.
