Bill proudly served four years in the U.S. Navy, two of which he was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Bill often said those years were two of the best years of his life. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Bill attended Paul Smith's College majoring in Hotel Management.

Bill began working at Montgomery Wards as a sales manager for several years in Ithaca, NY, then Berwick, PA. In September of 1960 Bill began his career with Metropolitan Insurance Company beginning in the sales while attaining his CLU, then several management positions.
