Reverend Lewis R. Mericle



Wellsville, NY - Reverend Lewis R. Mericle, age 95, of 49 Rauber Street passed away on Friday, January 15, 2016 in his home. He was born on January 18, 1920 in Main Settlement, Pennsylvania to George and Elsie Harvey Mericle. On December 7, 1991 in Wellsville he married Shirley Raub who survives.


Lewis attended school in East Sharon, Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946. He worked for the Bingham Township for 9 years and in 1954 he became a truck driver for Harris Supply from where he retired in 1985. Lewis was the Pastor at several locale chuches for over 50 years. His first church was the Free Methodist Church in Hornell where he pastored for eight years, then the Fords Brook Church and then the Shongo Country Chapel where he currently is the Pastor. He enjoyed hunting and New York Mets Baseball.

Survivors include his wife Shirley of Wellsville; a son James Mericle of Lockport; 2 daughters Barbara (Sam) Gunter of Philipsburg, PA. and Ann (Rich) Jenkins of Wellsville; 4 step daughters Evelyn (Richard) Fletcher of Greenville, OH., Janice (Frank) Konier of Lanexa, VA., Michelle Crom of Jacksonville, NC., and Stephanie (Bill) Paschall of Rudy, AR.(Arkansas); 6 grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 11 step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Lewis was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Beth Young, a grandson Justin Forman and 3 brothers Glen, George, and Earl; 2 sisters Florence and Genevieve.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. His funeral service will be held in the Shongo Country Chapel Church in Shongo on Wednesday at 11 am. The Reverend Harry Barrigar assisted by the Reverend Frank Skies will preside the funeral service. Following the service at church he will be given a full military service followed by burial in Ulysses Cemetery.   1. Sorry for your loss, Lewis use to work for my Dad in North Bingham, I use to sit on his Harley he would park in the drive way. Tipped it over one time and mother had to help me sit it back up.

  2. Aunt Shirley, so many touching memories come rushing to the surface right now about U. Lewis as I write this from Atlanta. First of all, how much he loved you and showed his love for your family, especially to me and my girls back in 2004. Together,you were both a fun pair, ready to serve your church, host family and friends at your house and give a 'special' ear to anyone who's going through stuff. Together your encouragement gave me hope that my life would get back on track and get better, which it did. I love you both and know Uncle Lewis is well in the arms of Jesus.
