Wayne “Satch” Gary



Wellsville, NY - Wayne “Satch” Gary of 39 Sunset Avenue, Wellsville NY,  was born in Wellsville, NY on September 23, 1939 and died at Jones Memorial Hospital after a lengthy battle with lung cancer December 29, 2016. Wayne was the son Cleo Gary, Edith Sprague Gary and  Stepmother: Carolyn Gary. He was married to Therese Rose Fortner of Wellsville on April 11, 1964 at Immaculate Conception Church (52 years).


Survived by wife “TC” Gary, and daughters Gretchen Gary, Cynthia Gary (R. Christopher Kosciewicz), sister Rita (Gary) Lipsius, brother-in-law Joseph Fortner (Mary Joe), sister-in-law Sheila Gary, grandchildren Austin Johnson, Emily, Erin and Michael Kosciewicz.  He will be remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews.  Lifelong friends include Jack Emrick, Brian Padden, Tom O’Grady and Pat Hoover. Predeceased by parents Cleo Gary and Edith Sprague Gary; daughter Molly Marie Gary, and brother Dene Gary.

Wayne grew up and lived in Wellsville his entire life, graduating from Wellsville High School in 1957.  A graduate of the State University of New York at Brockport with a BS in Science. He took graduate courses from Alfred University and obtained a master’s of science degree from Union College.
Known as “Satch” by all, he taught high school science at Scio Central School for 33 years, named teacher of the year in 1993, retiring in 1995. He was an advisor to many senior classes and remembered by his students for his practical teaching of high school biology, chemistry and physics. He is best remembered as Scio’s baseball coach from 1970 to the early 80’s, loved by many who played for him, going to the sectional finals five times, winning two trophies. The Scio Tigers won over 100 games those 10 years. He was recognized for this achievement by his fellow coaches, referees and fans by being inducted into the Allegany County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.  Satch enjoyed keeping Scio’s basketball clock as well.  

The nickname “Satch” came early in life during Wellsville Little League when his signature pitching resembled Satchel Paige, perhaps the best pitcher in baseball history in the mid 1900’s. Satch was known for his baseball achievements - as a pitcher in the Wellsville Little League, Babe Ruth, high school and as a catcher in his college years. Satch had a true love for his family, the outdoors, especially 3H Camp. Satch was both of his daughter’s biggest fan. He had a love for John Wayne, Waylon Jennings, family dogs and the game of baseball, especially his beloved NY Mets.

Calling hours will be held at the J W Embser Sons Funeral Home, 34 West State Street in Wellsville, Tuesday, January 3 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.  A catholic service will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 4 Maple Avenue, Wednesday, January 4 at 11 am.  Burial will be held at a later date. William “Billy” Broughton

Wellsville, NY - William “Billy” Broughton, 55, of 110 O’Connor Street passed away on Wednesday. December 21, 2016 at Jones Memorial Hospital with his family at his side. He was born September 28, 1961 in Elmira the son of the late Robert and Beulah (Sick) Broughton. On October 1, 1983 in Wellsville he married Audrey Dash who survives.

Billy was a former employee of Key Bank, Allegany Arc and was a great help to his parents at the Wellsville Dry Cleaners. He was an ordained minister, an accomplished photographer, an avid fisherman and enjoyed his many animals over the years. He loved his nieces and nephews as if they were his own children, and presented them with interesting and unique gifts, to the horror of their parents. 

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sisters, Bonnie (Richard) Ives of Wellsville and Barbara (Mark) Tolbert of Horseheads, one brother, Bruce (Anne) Broughton of Painted Post, one bother-in-law, Jimmy Dash, three sisters-in-law, Gloria Dash, Carol (Ed) Mezger and Eileen (Jim) Marble, as well as several beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by two nephews, Jeremy Ives and Thomas Dash.

Terrance J. (Terry) Brown



Wellsville, NY - On the morning of Sunday, December 18, 2016, Terrance J. (Terry) Brown lost his year-long battle with cancer. After seeing his daughter Erin married the day before, Terry passed surrounded by the lights and love of his life-wife and three daughters. Terry was born on March 25, 1961 at Jones Memorial Hospital, to James and Joan (Bruckman) Brown. Growing up in Rochester, the family eventually moved back to Wellsville, where Terry graduated from Wellsville Central School in 1980. After graduation, Terry joined the U.S. Air Force. Upon completing his service at home and overseas, Terry returned home before spending several years working and living in several areas of the country. In 1993, Terry married his wife Shelley (Gach) Brown of Wellsville, NY - Terry is survived by his beloved wife Shelley and their three daughters, Gretchen, Erin (Sean Pummell), and Hannah. As well as his mother Joan, sisters Michelle (Gary Perkins), Patricia (Mark McIntosh), Kathleen (Craig Endres), Kelly (Tim Allison), and brother James (Elizabeth).


Terry was also loved by sister in laws Robin (Jon Davenport) Gach and Heidi (Scott) Kotla, several nieces and nephews, and Shawn Cronan and Cody Miller, boyfriends of Gretchen and Hannah, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Always full of energy and ever the protective older brother, Terry’s family was everything to him, and dedicated his life to providing for his wife and daughters.

Terry was predeceased by his father James, grandparents Harvey and Mary Brown, Fred and Almera Bruckman, as well as in-laws Francis and Joyce Gach.

Robyn C. Burdick

Belmont, NY - Robyn C. Burdick, 62, of 13 Schuyler Street, a loving daughter, sister and aunt, went to be with her Lord on Monday, December 5, 2016. She was born November 20, 1954 in Wellsville, the daughter of Robert N. and Carol A. (Peterson) Burdick Sr. 

Robyn was employed as a respiratory therapist for many years in New York, Pennsylvania and South Carolina, before becoming disabled in 1995. She attended the Genesis Bible Church. The love and joy of Robyn’s life was spending time with her family, especially having her nieces & nephews around, they were her kids!! She loved to make crafts, crocheting and cross stich. She also loved going to Bone Builders exercise group in Belmont and helping with the Office for the Aging lunches 

She is survived by her father and stepmother, Robert and Phyllis Burdick of Charles Town, WV, two sisters, Marcy (Doug) Crawford of Belmont, Rhonda (Roy) Bryan of Richlands, NC, three brothers, Raymond (Mary Ellen) Burdick of Belmont, Robert (Donna) Burdick of Richlands, NC, Bryan (Joanne) Burdick Sr. of Belmont, eight nieces, Veronica, Jessica, Hannah, Nicole, Corina, Shannon, Sarah and Amanda, five nephews, Bryan Jr., Elijah, William, Wayne and Aaron, six great nieces, Kylee Ann, Regan, Riley, Addyson, Kennedy and Salia, eight great nephews, Bryce, Zachary, Bryan, Damon, Jacob, Toby, Alex and Adan, three aunts, June (Herb) Harrington of Belmont, Jeanette (Bill) Retorick of West Virginia and Marilyn Peterson of Avoca, one uncle, Donald Peterson of Wellsville and several cousins. Ernestine Secor Wood

Whitesville/ Roanoke, VA - Ernestine Secor Wood of Roanoke, Virginia, peacefully went to be with the Lord at age 92 on Thursday, December 1, 2016. She married the love of her life, Pastor L. Robert Wood in 1945 after studying at The Nyack Missionary Training Institute; now Nyack College. Together they served in ministry in Whitesville, New York until his death in 1978. In 1996, she left the town and church she loved for 51 years to be near her family.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, James C. Secor and Alice Butler Secor; brothers, Ralph George, and James Secor; and son-in-law, Blake Shores.

She is survived by daughters, Ruth Wood Marino, Elizabeth Wood Shores and Cynthia Wood (James) Van Druff all of Roanoke; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Robert and Herbert Secor; sister, Alice Secor (Charles) Muth; sister-in-law, Betty Wood and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday Evening, December 9, 2016 at the Gospel Chapel (Christian and Missionary Alliance) on Park Street in Whitesville from 6 to 8 pm. A memorial service to honor the life of this loving servant of God will be held at the church on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 2 pm. Phillip A. Taylor


Allentown, NY - Phillip A. Taylor, 79, of 1913 White Hill Road passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at home with his family at his side. He was born July 25, 1937 in Wellsville, the son of the late Isaac and Bessie (Harrington) Taylor. On February 1, 1958 in Alma he married Norma Stephens who survives.


Phil was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1957. He was employed at C. E. Air Preheater Co. in Wellsville for 37 years. He began his career as a welder and retired in 2006 as an inspector. He was a 50 year member of the Allentown Volunteer Fire Department; where he served as Captain, Trustee and Fire Chief. He enjoyed hunting, old westerns, history, traveling and puttering. 

Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Shaun (Ezura) Taylor of Allentown, a daughter, Molly Stirk of Wellsville, a grandson, Gregory (Jen) Taylor of Scio, a granddaughter, Ashley Taylor of Allentown, a sister, Betty (Jim) Grossman of Andover, a brother, Isaac (Doris) Taylor of Richburg and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by a sister, Dorothy McCoy.

Maryan “Marty” Numeracki



Belmont, NY - Maryan “Marty” Numeracki, 87, of 4443 Back River Road, passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at home with his family. He was born February 2, 1929 in Buffalo, the son of the late John and Sophie (Zomorski) Numeracki. On February 25, 1956 in Erie, PA he married Irma Potter who survives.


Marty served with the United States Marine Corps from 1947 to 1950 and with the United States Navy Reserves from 1952 to 1956. He was employed as a machinist at Dresser-Rand in Wellsville for 25 years. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed Hunting, fishing and farming.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Timothy Numeracki of Wellsville and Michael (Dana) Numeracki of Belmont, two daughters, Leslie (Bill) Patterson of Casenova, VA and Laura (Brian) Shea of Rochester, eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, a brother, James (Shirley) Petersen of Buffalo, a sister, Deborah (Tom) Januchowski of Buffalo, a brother-in-law, Bernard Duman of West Seneca, several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Glenda Conway of Georgia. He was predeceased by a brother, John Numeracki and a sister, Dolores Duman.

Christopher Golden

Wellsville, NY - Christopher Golden, 55, of 237 O’Connor Street passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2016 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born December 21, 1960 in Binghamton, NY the son of the late Roger and Lois (Smith) Golden.

Christopher was formerly employed by Piece Work Industries in Wellsville. While living at the Arc home in Alfred, he participated in activities at Lighthouse Ministries. He will be sadly missed by the Allegany Arc staff and residents in both Alfred and the O’Connor Street residence in Wellsville.

He is survived by two brothers, Roger (Ann) Golden of Brewster, NY and Alton (Sue) Golden of Georges Mill, NH, two sisters, Elaine (Bill) Kenny of Reno, NV, and Lucile (Rob) Clougherty of Cosco, ME, as well as several nieces and nephews.

James Bert Scholes

Geneseo, NY - James Bert Scholes was born on April, 1921, in Stamford, Connecticut, third son and youngest child of Samuel Ray and Elizabeth (Boren) Scholes. He died from complications of a fall November 15, 2016, in Livingston County, New York.

He grew up in Alfred, New York, where he and Eloise Bassett were married October 31, 1942. A graduate of Middlebury College, he served as an engineer officer in World War II. As a professor of English, he taught in Kansas, Illinois, Tennessee, North Carolina, and (from 1959 to 1984) at the State University of New York at Geneseo, where he received teaching awards in 1964 and 1976. Following retirement, he enjoyed a second career on the regional stage in and around Rochester in dramatic vehicles from Chekhov to On Golden Pond, and most recently in the Geriactors, a senior traveling troupe which he co-founded.

He was the last of his generation in the family, having been predeceased be his wife, and siblings Samuel Ray Scholes Jr., Ann (Scholes) Colvin, and Addison Boren Scholes. Survivors include his daughter Sandra Scholes Henderson, son-in-law Harold Henderson, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and nieces and nephews. Friends, colleagues, and relatives cherish memories of his enthusiasm, his determination, his unfailing sense of humor, and his generosity with time, money, and spirit.

Myrna Evelyn Rogers Blouvet Burch

Scio, NY - Myrna Evelyn Rogers Blouvet Burch, 78, of Wolf Spring Road passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at home, surrounded by her family. She was born September 20, 1938 in Olean, the daughter of Milton and Virginia (Owens) Rogers. On December 24, 1988 in their home, she married Royden B. Burch who predeceased her on December 24, 2005.

Myrna was a graduate of Scio Central School. In 1980 she was a member of the first LPN class at BOCES in Belmont. She was a beloved private duty nurse for many families in the Wellsville area for many years. She enjoyed watching basketball, playing cards, and was well known for calling friends and family on their birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions. She was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by children, grandchildren and extended family. 

She is survived by a son, James “Brad” (Shilo) Blouvet of Friendship, three daughters, Kim L. Blouvet of Laurel, MD, Kelley L. Blouvet of Memphis, NY, and Susan J. Babbitt of Wellsville, seven grandchildren, Tegan, Haley, Jacob, Bradley and his wife Tracy, Courtney and her husband Wesley, Christofer and Caroline, six great grandsons, Emeris, Steven, Haidyn, Samuel, Joseph and Lucas, two great granddaughters, Bailey and Felicia, one sister, Lela Seibert of Olean, a sister-in-law, Marlene Rogers of Alden, two brothers-in-law, Richard Seibert of Delaware and Carl Kuhn of Richburg, as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Milton Rogers and a sister, Gail Hurlburt.

Frederick J. “Rick” Carr

Wellsville, NY - Frederick J. “Rick” Carr, age 69, of 36 Early Street passed away on Monday, November 14, 2016 in Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 20, 1947 in Wellsville to Frederick and Jean Lucas Carr. On December 7, 1986 he married Kathleen Chamizo who survives him.

Rick graduated from Scio Central High School and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. He worked for LAPP Insulation in LeRoy for 21 years and in 1998 moved to Texas where he became an owner operator of ATS Trucking. Rick had driven in all of the lower 48 states and into Canada before retiring in 2007. In 2014 he and Kathleen moved back to Wellsville. He was a member of the VFW Post 2530 of Wellsville where he last danced on Monday November 7, 2016.

Surviving besides his wife of 30 years are 2 step sons, Daniel Anderton and John Anderton both of Wellsville; 6 sisters, Sandy (Bernie) Jackson of Wellsville, Kay (Bill) Bennett of Perry, Kim (Rube) Jenkins of Hornell, Penny Martin of Hinsdale, Ellen Carr of Colorado and Melinda (Bob) McMaster of Orchard Park; several nieces and nephews and his dog and long time traveling companion, Sassy.

Rick was predeceased by his parents, a sister Nancy Hayes and his brother, Kevin Carr.

Beverly S. Raynor

Wellsville, NY - Beverly S. Raynor, age 79, of the Stannards Road passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Jones Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 20, 1937 in Wellsville to Carlos and Onolee Davidson Starr. On June 10, 1967 in the Stannards United Methodist Church she married Charles Raynor who predeceased her on November 2, 2012.

Bev was a graduate of the Wellsville High School class of 1955. She began her nursing education at Geneseo and University of Buffalo and then completed her Associates Degree in Nursing from Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York City. While working at Elmhurst Hospital she met Charlie whom she married and together they raised two sons in Queens. Bev and Charlie later moved to Wellsville to take care of her parents, Carlos and Onolee. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and her cousin Barb Kalamets, Knitting, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the New York State Nursing Association and attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wellsville.

Bev is survived by 2 sons, Charles Raynor II of Bartonsville, PA.,and Lawrence (Patricia) Raynor Queens, NYC.; 2 grandchildren, Rebecca Raynor and Kyle Raynor; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Howard E. Slocum Sr.

Allentown, NY - Howard E. Slocum Sr. “Iron Man”, age 86, of the Hog Brook Road passed away on Friday, October 7, 2016 at the University Of Rochester Medical Center. He was born October 29, 1929 in Scio to Carl and Esther Burton Slocum. On August 19, 1946 in Bolivar he married the love of his life Elizabeth Burgess who predeceased him on October 27, 2010.

Howard was a long time resident of the Allentown Area who started working for Air Preheater in 1951 and retired this year after 65 years of service. He was an avid stock car fan who raced the dirt track circuit for over 30 years. Howard was a devoted family man who was hard working, humble, honest, and a role model to everyone. He loved life and was beloved opening his home and his heart to anyone in need without seeking recognition. Howard enjoyed the out of doors and especially going to ham and leek dinners. One of his favorite quips was “I was born when the best ships were wooden but the men were iron men”

Howard is survived by 2 daughters, Ruth (Keith) Swift of Dansville and Janice Slocum of Allentown; 4 sons, Fran (Carol) Slocum of Wellsville, Charles Slocum of Allentown, Gerry (Louann) Slocum of Scio and Dennis (Debbie) Slocum of Wellsville; 15 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; 2 sisters in-law, Alice (Jim) Berry of Florida and Carol Slocum of Shinglehouse, PA.; a brother in law, Dale Burgess of Wellsville; several nieces and nephews.

Howard was predeceased by a son, Howard Jr., a grandson, Jerry Slocum, a granddaughter, Shelley Benson, 2 brothers, Francis and Harry “Bud” Slocum, a sister in law Mary Slocum.

Donald H. Newland

Wellsville, NY - Donald H. Newland, age 87, of Wellsville, New York passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Jones Memorial Hospital.  He was born on February 14, 1929 in Port Allegany, PA to Harold and Anna (Firman) Newland.  On September 17, 1949 he married the love of his life Norma Mallery who predeceased him on February 22, 2011.

Don graduated from Wellsville High School in 1946.  After graduation he served in the U.S. Army until 1949.  He was stationed in Fort Bliss, assigned to Battery B, First Guided Missile Regiment where he was selected to work on the Von Braun team to develop the guidance system (gyro) for the V2 Rocket that subsequently became part of the NASA Space Program.  Don also served as a military escort for service personnel that were killed in WWII when their remains were repatriated to the United States.  Following his service, Don was a Senior Development Engineer at Eastman Kodak and then hired as an Engineering Section Leader at General Dynamics in Rochester.  
Along with his wife Norma, Don was owner and operator of Mallery Television for over 40 years.  

The community of faith was a driving force in his life.  He was a member of the Christian Temple Church in Wellsville where he served as a deacon, elder, and an interim speaker.  He also wrote and acted in The Players, a church drama group.  

Don volunteered in the local community including delivering meals on wheels, assisting others through a volunteer driver program, and initiating the first volunteer glass recycling program.
He was an avid golfer, fisherman, and at a young age became a die-hard NY Yankees fan.

Don is survived by a son, Dr. Guy (Cherie) Newland of Beavercreek, Ohio; three daughters, Jan Pratt of Wellsville, Carrie (Larry Peacock) Whitwood of Wellsville, and Andrea Hall of Tennessee; son-in-law Brian Thomas of Georgia; 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.  

Don was predeceased by his parents, his wife Norma, his daughter Leslie Thomas, a brother Andrew, and six sisters, Marie, Marion, Elva, Arla, Florence and Helen.  

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Christian Temple Church in Wellsville, New York; a Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 p.m.

Jeffrey Charles Densmore

Wellsville, NY - Jeffrey Charles Densmore, age 36, of Florida Avenue passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 4, 2016. He was born on February 12, 1980 in Wellsville to Charles and Sherry Cole Densmore who survive him.

Jeff was a lifelong resident of Wellsville who graduated from Wellsville High School and obtained a welding certificate from the Alfred State College Vocational School. He was a welder by trade who had worked for Alstom in Wellsville and for several other manufacturing companies. Jeff was a Yankees Fan who enjoyed sports, especially football, basketball and baseball. He will be remembered as a hardworking man and father.

Survivors include his parents of Wellsville and his maternal grandfather, Paul Cole of Wellsville; 5 sons, Dylan Densmore of Wellsville, Noah Roberts of Newfane, Jace Densmore of Wellsville, Cole Densmore of Wellsville, and Kasey Densmore of Wellsville; a sister, Stacey Kamrowski of Scio; 2 nieces; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Gertrude Edith Palmer Peaslee

Allentown, NY - Gertrude Edith Palmer Peaslee, age 98, a longtime resident of Allentown passed away on Monday October 3, 2016 at the Wellsville Manor Hills. She was the daughter of the late Harold and Eva Marjorie Barth Hunt.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Edwin Palmer, and her second husband, Raymond Peaslee. She was also predeceased by 3 sisters, Betty, Geraldine and Helen; and a brother, Harold.

She is survived by her only child, Howard Palmer (Jean) of California; 2 grandsons, James (Lisa) and Richard (Lisa); 4 great grandchildren, Jarrod, Allison, Nathan, and Ryan; her sister Corrine Mathern of Wellsville.

Gert will be remembered by many as the smiling, cheerful proprietor of Palmer’s General Store in Allentown which see ran for more than 40 years.

Honoring her wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private family service is planned. A celebration of her life will held at a later date. Theresa T. Biancuzzo

Belmont, NY - Theresa T. Biancuzzo, 82, of 22 Norton Street passed away on Friday, September 30, 2016 at the Hart Comfort House. She was born January 26, 1934 in Belmont, the daughter of the late Carlo and Violet (Lewis) Biancuzzo.

Theresa was a 1952 graduate of Belmont Central School. She graduated from St. James Mercy Hospital, School of Nursing in 1956. She attended Syracuse University while working at the University Hospital. She moved to Olean in 1959 and began her 27 year career as Nursing Supervisor at St. Francis Hospital, retiring in 1986. 
   
She is survived by three sisters, Roseanna Tait, Josephine Biancuzzo and Felecia Biancuzzo all of Belmont, a sister-in-law, Deborah Biancuzzo of Wellsville, three nephews, Stephen (Lynn) Biancuzzo, Daniel Biancuzzo and Andrew (Adriane) Biancuzzo, one niece, Cathy (KJ) Spinks, six great nieces and nephews, Toby (Emily) Spinks, Joshua Spinks, Andrea (Jeremy) Niece, Alyssa (Brent) Cox, Vinny Biancuzzo and Parker Biancuzzo, two great-great nephews, Brayton Niece and Fynn Niece and one great-great niece, Haylee Spinks. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, John Biancuzzo, a sister-in-law, Andrea Biancuzzo and a brother-in-law, Larry Tait.

Norbert J. Michalak Sr.,

Bath, NY - Norbert J. Michalak Sr., 84, who resided at the VA Medical Center in Bath, NY, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the VA Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. He was born December 24, 1931 in Dunkirk, NY, the son of the late John and Emily (Sypniewski) Michalak. On June 27, 1953 at Holy Trinity Church in Dunkirk he married Lenora Theresa Ingavo who survives.

Norbert formerly resided in Dunkirk where he attended St. Hedwig’s Church. He was a graduate of Dunkirk High School and attended Roberts School of Barbering in Buffalo. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and served as a Seaman Apprentice. He was employed as a Technical Clerk at the American Locomotive Company. He also worked at his father’s barber shop on Doughty Street in Dunkirk. 

Surviving in addition to his wife of Wellsville, is one son, Norbert (Lori) Michalak of Scio, three grandchildren, Andrew, Steven and Kelly Michalak. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a daughter, Cynthia Michalak and a brother, Leonard Michalak.

Jack W. Dufrin

Wellsville, NY - Jack W. Dufrin, 86, formerly of 1887 Stannards Road passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Madison Wisconsin. He was born on June 4, 1930 in Garden City, Kansas the son of Ernest M. and Ruth H. (Dunham) Dufrin. On May 27, 1972 at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland he married Ruth V. Vaske who predeceased him on December 1, 2001.

Jack was a 1948 graduate of Canon City High School in Canon City Colorado. He was a 27 year veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War from 1951 to 1952 and in the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971. He retired from the military in 1974 as CWO2 QM Food Advisor and Instructor. Jack enjoyed working with his hands and was a self-taught woodworker

He is survived by two daughters, Ruthmari (Thomas) Andersen of Stoughton, WI., and JuneAn (Kevin) Lanigan of Portola Valley, CA, two stepdaughters, Dawn (John) Briggs of Baltimore, MD and Terri (Peter) Maslona of Scio, a stepson, Colby Smith of Aberdeen, MD, 4 grandchildren, Joshua (Greta) Andersen, Ashley (Nathan) Hessenthaler, Mackenzie Lanigan and Caitlyn Lanigan; 3 step grandchildren, Gabriella Brainard, Bobby (Patricia) Brainard and Hope (Richard) Wisniewski; 4 great grandchildren and 15 step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
  
Jack was also predeceased by his parents and his brother William.

Charles Francis Costello

Wellsville, NY and Lake Wales, Florida - Charles Francis Costello, 76, passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at home in Wellsville surrounded by his family. He was born January 14, 1940 in Stannards the son of the late Fredrick and Anna C. (Regan) Costello. On December 1, 1962 in Genesee, PA he married Marjorie Perkins who survives.


Charles retired after 40 years of employment at Air-Preheater Company in Wellsville and continued to consult for the company for an additional 10 years. He loved spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, traveling and gardening. He will be most remembered by his family and friends for his tireless work ethic, sense of humor and his quick wit. He was a life member of the Emerald Hook and Ladder and a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Lake Wales FL.


Surviving in addition to his wife is a son, Charles (Lynne) Costello of Wellsville and their children, Meghan (Patrick) Fealey, Sarah Costello, and Kevin (Jordan) Costello, a son, Daniel (Julie) Costello of Wellsville and their children, Erica (Steve) Richardson and Taylor Costello, a son, Tim (Kelly) Costello of Wellsville and their children, Quincy, Emily and Cody Costello, a daughter, Tammy (Mark) Emery of Whitesville and their children, Bill and Onalee Emery, a daughter, Anna (Larry) Hallett of Millinocket, ME and their children, Ryan, Regan, Daniel and Olivia Hallett, a daughter, Stephanie (Bryan) Decker of Clarence, NY and their children, Cayden, and Haylee Decker, two sisters, Marie (Tom) House of Towanda, PA and Betty Lewis of Wellsville, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary Ellen Patricia Barber Craft

Wellsville, NY - Mary Ellen Patricia Barber Craft, 50, of Wellsville, NY, died Saturday, September 17, 2016 in Jones Memorial Hospital after a lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Born July 26, 1966, in Wellsville, NY, she was the daughter of the late William C. Barber and Theresa Smith Barber. She was a 1984 graduate of Northern Potter High School and later obtained her teaching degree from the State University of New York at Oneonta. She was a science teacher for the Adirondack Central School District in Booneville, NY. Mary Ellen later was a substitute teacher for Wellsville Central School and had worked for the David A. Howe Library before retiring due to her illness.

On July 26, 2008, she married Ward R. Craft, who survives.

Mary Ellen was a true animal lover and cared for many pets throughout her life, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinnea pigs, and alpacas. 

She was an avid NY Jets fan that loved reading, jogging and hunting in her younger years.

Surviving besides her husband, Ward, are a son, Derek Folts of Albany, NY; her mother, Theresa Barber of Genesee, PA; a brother, William (Corinne) Barber of New York, NY; a sister, Kathleen Barber of Albany, NY; a stepdaughter, Crystal Craft of Lubbock, TX; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. In addition to her dad, William, an infant daughter, Darcy Folts, predeceased her.

George W. Reuther

Wellsville, NY - George W. Reuther of 160 Seneca Street passed away on Friday, September 9, 2016, at the Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 2, 1928 in Buffalo to George A. and Margaret Porsch Reuther.

George was raised in Buffalo and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1946 until 1950 serving on both the USS Columbus and the USS Portsmouth. In 1950 he began working for the New York Central Railroad from where he retired from in 1988. George moved to Tucson Arizona after he retired and lived there until 2015 when he moved to Wellsville to be near his daughter. While in Tucson he enjoyed the company of Tina Milbrandt for 22 years. He enjoyed bowling at the Cactus Bowl in Tucson where taught youth bowling on Saturday Mornings. George enjoyed the company of his dog China, his faithful companion and soulmate. George will be remembered as a wonderful, loving and funny man.

George is survived by his 3 daughters, Claudia Reuther of Jamestown, Michele (Steve) Pettenati of Wellsville and Amy (Danielle) Reuther-Keis; a sister, Helen (Carl) Koepplle of Cheektowaga; 9 grandchildren, Ben, Amanda, Christopher, Zachary, Nathan, Shawn, Wendy, Michael and Shemere; 2 great grandchildren, Eleyna and Kalista; Tina’s children, Carol (Dan) Hunt, Sandy (John) VanEvery and Micki (Larry) Totten who took care of him for 15 years; several nieces , nephews and step grandchildren.

George was predeceased parents; his siblings, Betty, John, Marge, Loretta, Donald, Pete and Jimmy; his longtime companion Tina and a niece Renee’.

Dolores Ann Kinne

Dansville, NY - Dolores Ann Kinne, age 77, formerly of West Avenue, passed away on September 7, 2016 at the Highland Health Care Center in Wellsville. She was born on May 4, 1939 in Bath to Charles and Beatrice Davidson Gayhart. She was married to John Chase who predeceased her and later Donald Kinne who all predeceased her.

Dolores loved music and enjoyed word search puzzles. She is survived by a son Michael (Ellie) Chase; 2 daughters, Nancy Helser and Bonnie Nephew; a step son John Chase; 4 stepdaughters, Dorothy (Donald) Gayhart, Betty Sage, Shirley Greenhagen and Mary Gayhart ;several grandchildren and great grandchildren; 5 brothers, Clifton (Gladys) Gayhart, Thomas (Edwina) Gayhart, Paul Gayhart, Billy Gayhart and Donald (Dorothy) Gayhart; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husbands Dolores was predeceased by a daughter, Grace Collalto; a step daughter, Linda Graves and a stepson Larry Chase.

Rita C. Childs

Scio, NY - Rita C. Childs, 90, formerly of the Vandermark Road passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at the Hart Comfort House in Wellsville. She was born on April 27, 1926 in Wellsville to the late Henry and Mary Carmel (Smith) Rahr. On September 26, 1946 in Wellsville she married William Harold Childs how predeceased her on December 8, 2005.

Rita graduated from the Immaculate Conception School in 1943 and in 1945 she graduated from Wellsville Central High School in 1945. She was a longtime resident of Scio who had moved to Bangor, Maine and returned to this area in 2014 to live in Wellsville. She had retired from Jones Memorial Hospital in 1986 and had previously worked at W.T. Grants, Loblaws and Super Duper all in Wellsville. Rita was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church of Belmont, the Third Order of St. Francis, the Alter and Rosary Society, and the Father Brown Mission Club where she made rosaries. Rita was a Girl Scout Leader who enjoyed camping and bowling.

Rita is survived by a son, William H. (Kathryn Eaton) Childs of Bangor, ME. And a daughter Carla Orosz of Wellsville. She has 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a brother, Richard Rahr of Scio, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Browning Rahr of Wellsville and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Rita was predeceased two daughters, Carla Ann Childs and Deborah Cunningham, a granddaughter, Catherine Cunningham, two sisters, Marion Moir, and Elizabeth Earl, a brother, Carl H. Rahr Sr., a sister-in-law, Donna Rahr, and two brothers-in-law, Dr. Thomas Moir and Robert Earl.

Clara L. Howard

Belmont, NY - Clara L. Howard, 72, of 4269 State Route 19 South passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at home following a long illness. She was born on May 13, 1944 in the Town of Wirt, the daughter of the late Ira and Sarah (Warner) Hosmer. On October 15, 2005 in Scio, she married Everett “Gene” Howard who survives.

Clara was raised in Bolivar and attended Bolivar Central School. She cleaned for several doctors in the Wellsville area and for Steuben Trust Company in Andover. She also helped many families with child care when the parents went on vacation. After moving to Arizona in 1991, she was employed at Dillard’s Department Store and then became a press operator for G.W. Plastics, where she was later promoted to supervisor of the cleaning department. She returned to Wellsville in 2004 and worked as a homecare health provider. In Retirement she enjoyed meeting her friends for coffee.  

Surviving in addition to her husband is one daughter, Sara (Neel) Geshwind of Scio, five grandchildren, Katlyn, Tylor, Nathan, Sara Theresa and Aretha Shaver, four great grandchildren, Cloey and Caleb Middaugh, Nevaeh Fayth Shaver and Sontiago Gamez, four step children, Tim, Tony, Tom, and Tina Howard, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and five brothers and sisters, she was predeceased by two sons, James Ira Shaver on August 25, 2015 and Scott Shaver on September 13, 2009.

Virginia T. Vincent

Allentown, NY - Virginia T. Vincent, 91, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Hart Comfort House in Wellsville. She was born March 26, 1925 in Olean, the daughter of the late Louis and Ethel (Said) Tucker. On August 23, 1950 in Bolivar she married Francis D. Vincent who predeceased her on October 24, 2003. 

Virginia was raised in Olean and was a 1943 graduate of Olean High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Albany State Teachers College in 1947 and continued her education at St. Bonaventure University and SUNY Geneseo. She began her teaching career as a math and science teacher at the Allentown Union School. She later became a special education teacher through Allegany County BOCES in Allentown, Belmont and Scio; retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Allentown United Methodist Church. Throughout her life Virginia held memberships in several organizations committed to education including, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Allegany County Teachers Association, the Allegany Arc, Board of Directors and the Special Olympics. She was a devoted teacher whose former students continued to enrich her life.

Family was Virginia’s greatest joy. She is survived by three daughters, Paula (Gregory) Swier of Olean, Diana (John) Embser of Wellsville, and Donna (Marvin) Butts of Allentown, eight grandchildren, Sarah (David) Manzo,  Emily (Jason) Lane, Victoria “Tori” Swier, Vincent, Jenevera, Raymond, James and Sadie Embser, seven great-grandchildren, Creigh, Avin, Virginia and Kallen Manzo, Lilyana and Miles Lane and arriving soon, Aubriel Lane, a sister-in-law, Carletta Tucker of Orlando, Florida and several beloved nieces & nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Tucker, and two sisters, Josephine (Gus) Sinesiou and Genevieve (Durwood) Brennan.

Susan “Suzy Q” (Woodworth) Davenport

Scio, NY - The Lord was given another wonderful soul when Susan “Suzy Q” (Woodworth) Davenport passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Highland Park Healthcare Center in Wellsville following a lengthy battle with MS. She was born May 30, 1948 in Arkport, the daughter of the late Seymour and Julia (Galusha) Woodworth. On October 1, 1966 in Hornell she married William Davenport who predeceased her on June 23, 2015.

Susan attended school in Hornell and was a Sunday school teacher in Howard, NY. The family later moved to Texas where she worked in customer service. She became disabled in 1991 and the family moved to Scio. Susan then became a stay at home mom who loved being with her family. She lived at Highland for the past seven years, where she had a wonderful relationship with everyone she came in contact with. Susan was a fun loving, prankster who was a happy and kind person. She was a proud supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Shriner’s Hospitals, and the MS Foundation.

Susan was close to her family and is survived by one son, William P. (Cynthia) Davenport Jr. of Lockhart, TX, two daughters, Andrea (Jay) O’Brien of New Memphis, IL, and Julia Davenport of Scio, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three sisters, Mary Kay VanSkiver, Brenda (Mark) Fredereksen and Kimberlee (Partick) Fitzgerald, three sisters-in-law, Thelma Sadler, Marion Rounds and Waneta Barr, a brother-in-law, Volney Davenport, special longtime friends, Judith McCullum, Marguerite Warner Kriegesmann and Michael Woodworth. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Frank Davenport and Donald VanSkiver, a sister-in-law, Mary Davenport, and her mother and father-in-law, Volney and Thelma (Stryker) Davenport.

Terry Gene Monroe

Wellsville, NY - Terry Gene Monroe, age 77, of 249 North Main Street passed away at home on Sunday August 28, 2016. He was born on March 6, 1939 in Wellsville to Carl and Esther Preston Monroe.

Terry graduated from Andover Central High School in 1958 and had worked for over 34 years in the shop at Dresser Rand. Terry also worked for Bo-Ge Assembly in their shop, on their pulling tractor and antique cars. Terry’s greatest love, besides his children and grandchildren, was auto racing. If you knew Terry he was either talking about racing, going racing or watching racing. He made many friends throughout his years of racing that were like family to him. Terry had an infectious smile and with a tap of your arm he was ready to talk to you about his family and his interests. He enjoyed Sunday breakfast with his friends, driving and his daily walk to feed his sweet tooth. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and had been a member of the Duke Hose Company and the Moose Lodge.

Terry is survived by 3  sons, Jeffrey (Teri) Monroe and Kevin (Nancy) Monroe both of Wellsville and Steven (Lori) Snyder of  Crosby,Texas; 2 daughters, Kristen Snyder and Jennifer Culbert of Crosby, Texas; A sister, Janet (William) Moulton of Newport, Kentucky; a brother, William (Cheryl) Monroe of Andover; 7 grandchildren, Jarod Evans, Briana Tronetti, Cortni Monroe, Abbi Monroe, Toni Snyder, Taylor Snyder and Hayley Snyder; 3 great grandchildren, Jason Tronetti, Olivia Tronetti and Megan Snyder; several nieces and nephews as well as a special friend, Bernadine Green.

Terry was predeceased by his biological mother, Esther, his parents, Carl and Edna and his sister, Roselyn.

Beatrice J. Davis

Wellsville, NY - Beatrice J. Davis of 2327 Voorhees Hill, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Highland Park Healthcare Center following a brief illness. She was born October 3, 1928 in Salamanca, the daughter of Isaac and Lela Doris (Kervin) Hardy. On December 20, 1946 in Allentown she married W. Woodrow “Woody” Davis who predeceased her on August 19, 1984.

Beatrice was a graduate of the Allentown Union School. She owned and operated several businesses in the region, including the Modern Diner in Wellsville from 1956 untill 1969. She loved gardening and growing flowers. 

She is survived by a sister, Margaret Buchholz of Wellsville, several nieces & nephews and her beloved canine companion “Puppy”. She was predeceased in addition to her husband by three sons, Timothy, Terrence and Thomas Davis, three brothers, Robert Hardy and William and Harold Tingley, and one sister, Dorothy Mott.

Jenny L. Burdick

Wellsville, NY - Jenny L. Burdick, 71, of 79 King Street passed away on Friday, August 26, 2016 at the Highland Park Healthcare Center following a long illness. She was born February 27, 1945 in Wellsville, the daughter of Paul M. and Louise A. (Tait) Cole Sr. On June 25, 1966 in Wellsville she married Donald R. Burdick who predeceased her on October 26, 2004.

Jenny attended school in Wellsville. She loved to read, make crafts, listen to county music, and go out with friends to dance. She did a lot of baby sitting in her younger years and was a Cub Scout Den Mother in the Bolivar and Richburg area for 10 years. She worked with the junior bowlers in Bolivar for many years. She was employed as a personal care aide for Jan & Bev’s Home Care, Southern Tier Home Health Care and Associated Home Care. She also provided home care for several friends and family members. She was a member of the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department Axillary for many years.

She is survived by one son, Scott A. Burdick of Byron, NY, 1 brother, Paul J. Cole Jr. of Wellsville, two sisters, Marguerite “Susie” (Maxwell) Halladay Sr. of Wellsville and Linda M. Button of Richburg as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by one son, Michael T. Burdick who passed away on February 25, 2008, two brothers, William F. and Ronald E. Cole, one sister, Beverly J. Denning and a sister-in-law, Gertrude Cole.

Edward W. Carlin

Wellsville, NY - Edward W. Carlin, 98, of 2011 Meservey Hill passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the Highland Park Healthcare Center, following a brief illness. He was born April 9, 1918 in Scio, the son of Edward and Florence (Black) Carlin. October 2, 1941 in Wellsville he married Eleanor Ketchner who predeceased him on February 27, 2003.

Ed was a 1935 graduate of Scio Central School. He was employed as a machinist at Worthington Turbine from 1940 to 1980. He was a life member of the IAM Moore Lodge Local 1580. Ed was a very hard worker and was always willing to help family, neighbors, relatives and friends. He loved rebuilding steam engines and tinkering. 

He is survived by six children, Alan (Janet) Carlin of Wellsville, Rebecca (Harry) Campbell of Arlington, TX, Lois (Joseph) Spinelli of Wellsville, Kathi (Dennis) Dunham of Wellsville, Roger (Cheryl) Carlin of Wellsville and Theresa Willey of Tyaskin, MD, 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his longtime caregiver, Tina Schrader. He was predeceased by three sisters, Gladys McBride, Doris Harms, and Leola Ketchner, one brother, Everett Carlin, and one great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Campbell.

Lila Mayme Johnston

Wellsville, NY - Lila Mayme Johnston, 89, of Proctor Road passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Highland Park Healthcare Center. She was born on September 25, 1926, near Whitesville, the first born of Chester H. and Katherine Ann (Mattison) Norton. 

She attended school in West Jasper, Whitesville, Turtle Point, PA, Shongo and Wellsville. On May 14, 1943, on Beach Hill, Willing Township, she married Ervin E. Johnston, who predeceased her on June 20, 1998. After marriage, Lila and Ervin resided on Beach Hill and later on the McCurdy Road in Shongo for 51 years. For the last 22 years, she lived with her daughter on Proctor Road in Wellsville. Lila was first employed as a housekeeper, then worked at Mapes Woodworking Plant in Wellsville and finally she was a nurse’s aide at Highland Nursing Home for 15 years. She loved taking care of her family, cooking, canning, gardening, sewing, reading, and frequenting garage sales. Experimenting with new recipes was one of her delights, as well as collecting cookbooks. Lila took great pleasure in feeding a family of crows which her children dubbed, “Mama’s fat chickens.”

During the years in Shongo, Lila enjoyed attending the Shongo Community Club and served for many years as the secretary of the Shongo branch of the United Methodist Women. 

Survivors include three daughters, Katherine A. Grimmett of Toledo, OH, Phyllis E. Johnston of Wellsville and Marcia L. Hood of Rochester, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one great-great grandson, a brother, Robert W. Norton of Whitesville and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her husband by a grandson, Michael J. Grimmett, a sister, Lena J. Madison and a brother, Hoyt H. Norton.

Mary Kathryn “Kay” Peet

Wellsville, NY - Mary Kathryn “Kay” Peet, age 93, of Peet Avenue passed away on Monday, August 15, at Manor Hills. She was born on August 19, 1922 in Points, WV. to Montary and Eva Elizabeth Graybel Puffinburger. On June 28, 1940 in Genesee, PA., she married Leo Peet who predeceased her on December 11, 1996.

Kay was a stay at home mom who raised her family and supported her husband’s contracting business. She was a member of the Stannards United Methodist Church and the Senior Center. She enjoyed playing euchre in the many Senior Center Tournaments and was playing euchre up to two weeks ago. Kay enjoyed gardening and will be remembered for her cooking and baking.

Kay is survived by 2 sons, Gerald ”Jerry” (Peg) Peet of Wellsville and James (Dalaine) Peet of Wellsville; a daughter, Linda (James) Karns of Wellsville; 9 grandchildren; several great and great great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Kay was also predeceased by her parents, her son John Peet and her 11 brothers and sisters.

Keeping with Kay’s wishes there will be a private family graveside service in Stannards Cemetery with Kathy Timpano presiding. Charles J. White

Wellsville, NY - Charles J. White, age 88, of the Brandes Road passed away on Sunday, August 14, at the Highland Health Care Center. He was born on November 21, 1927 in Bradford, Pennsylvania to Shirley Egin and Madline Fisher White.

Charles graduated from Wellsville High School and was a veteran of the US Marine Corps serving from 1945 until 1946. He was a driller for Otis Eastern and drilled water wells with Louie Jackson. He was a life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars both of Wellsville.

Charles is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Charles was predeceased by his longtime companion, Ruth Fanton; 2 sisters, Betty Palmitter and Molly Parson; a brother, Dean Egen White.

June Audrey Petri LaForge

Wellsville, NY - June Audrey Petri LaForge, at the age of 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior as the dawn broke on Saturday, August 13, 2016.  Due to failing health, she had resided the last few years at the Wellsville Manor Care Center.  June was born on April 22, 1926, at Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo, NY.  She was the daughter of William P. and Merriam B. (Stone) Petri.  On August 18, 1951 she married F. Stanley LaForge in Belmont, NY.  

June graduated from Wellsville H.S. Class of 1944.  In 1948 she graduated from Albany State Teachers College (SUNY Albany).  She obtained graduate degrees from Alfred University in education, and from St. Bonaventure, in counseling.  She worked as an elementary teacher in the Scio and Wellsville School Districtsand after raising her two sons she worked in several area districts as a substitute.

June Bug”, (her husband’s nickname for her), enjoyed antiquesgenealogy, and painting.  She was a long time member of the Wellsville First United Methodist Church.  Other affiliations include:  The American Association of University Women, the Jones Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, Allegany County Board of ElectionsInspectorand a former member of the Past-Time Painters of the David A. Howe Library.  She was an accomplished oil painter.  Additionally, she served on numerous church committees throughout the years.  In her heyday, June was a real terror on the local auction and tag-sale circuits!  It is true – there was no one like her – always willing to offer her opinion – never shying away from confrontation.  However, to her credit she had a very compassionate side often donating time and resources to many local charities – most often behind the scenes.   She was especially fond of animals, including her dogs Rocky, Amber, Lucy-Deand her cockatiel, Joshua.

June was pre-deceased in 1992 by her husband, F. Stanley LaForge; her mother, Merriam Stone Petri 1994; her father, William P. Petri 1974, and infant granddaughter, Francine Marie LaForge 1995.  

June is survived by two sons; Kevin S. LaForge (Ginny) of Wellsville, NY, and William R. LaForge (Alisha) of Belmont, NY.  Also, three grandchildren Renee LaForge Johnson (Jeremy) of Wellsville, and Merriam and Stanley LaForge of Belmont, NY – still at home.  She is also survived by her two brothers:  William Arthur Petri (Ann) of Pompano Beach, FL; and Richard M. Petri (Delores) of Bellevue, WA, as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and a great-great nephew.  

Arrangements are under the care of Embser’s Funeral Home.  Calling hours will be at Ember’s of Wellsville, on Friday, August 19, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.  On Saturday, August 20, at the Wellsville First United Methodist Church at the corner of Maple and Madison Streets, from 10-11 am there will be visitation.  A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 am at the church.   A grave-side service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.  A lunch will follow in the church’s fellowship hall.

Robert R. Manning

Belmont, NY - Robert R. Manning, 73, of 5113 Noble Street passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at home with his family at his side. He was born April 11, 1943 in Wellsville, the son of the late C. James and Helen (Steenworth) Manning. On May 23, 1978 in Myrtle Beach, SC he married Lynn Winterhalter who survives.

Bob was a member of the Belmont Central School class of 1963. He was employed as a millwright for Dresser-Rand Corporation in Wellsville for 41 years, retiring in 2004. He was a member and past chief of the Belmont Volunteer Fire Department, member and past president of the Belmont Conservation Club and a member of the American Legion Post 702 SAL Squadron. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially loved travel and camping with family and friends.

Surviving in addition to his wife is one son, James D. Manning and his wife Julie of Maiden Creek, PA, two daughters, Kari Manning Zenoski of Frederick, MD and Erin Graham and her husband Christopher of Belmont, six grandchildren, Jami Stauffer and her husband Chad, Ryan Manning, Riley Zenoski and her fiancé, Chance Sullivan, Madison Zenoski, Gracyn Graham and Hadleigh Graham, one great grandson, James David Stauffer, one brother, Jon Manning and his wife Mary Ellen of Scio, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved canine companion, "Pepper". He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a sister, Penny Mapes.

Gene R. Fanton


Wellsville, NY - Gene R. Fanton, 82, of 3355 Madison Hill passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at home following a long illness. He was born March 14, 1934 in Wellsville, the son of the late Raymond and Marian (Wells) Fanton. On May 16, 1954 in Wellsville, he married Mary Lou Horn who predeceased him on October 30, 2013.

Gene was a 1952 graduate of Wellsville High School. He was a 20 year veteran of the U. S. Navy during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served aboard the USS Jeffers, USS George Clymer, USS Dale and the USS Dixie. Gene and Mary Lou formerly owned and operated The Belvedere Restaurant, he later worked for a brief time at Turbodyne Corporation in Wellsville and then became a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Wellsville for 13 years, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion, Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW, the Wellsville Moose Lodge # 601, the Wellsville Elks Lodge # 1495 and the former Christian Temple in Wellsville. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family, he was an avid the Buffalo Bills fan, and he loved his animals, especially Tippy his dog and Missy his cat. The extended family was very happy that Gene and Mary Lou purchased the Horn homestead for their residence.

Gene was a loving father to three sons, Gene Fanton Jr., Carl (Kim) Fanton of Wellsville and Jim (Ann White) Fanton of Belmont, 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, two sisters, Beverly “Bunny” Rahr of California and Dorothea “Dottie” Heers of Wellsville, a sister-in-law, Shirley (John) Giopulos of Wellsville, several nieces & nephews and his caregiver, Margaret Hirt. He was predeceased in addition to his parents, by a son, Bill Fanton, a grandson, Carl Fanton Jr., a great grandson, Michael Fanton and a sister-in-law, Cate Horn Tomah.
