Aaron J. White


Wellsville, NY - Aaron J. White, 21, of 25 Madison Street died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at home following a long battle with a depressive disorder. He was born January 24, 1992 in Wellsville the son of Charles R. and Vicki (Linza) White. 

Aaron was a 2010 graduate of Wellsville High School and was currently attending Jamestown Community College. He also attended Chenunda Creek Fellowship and enjoyed collecting rocks. 

Surviving in addition to his parents is a sister, Nicole White at home, maternal grandparents, Donald and Mary Kay Linza of Shongo, paternal grandmother, Elizabeth A. Lawrence of Dansville, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will be Friday, March 1, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Yorks Corners Mennonite Church with Pastor Stephen Richard presiding. Burial will be in Yorks Corners Cemetery. Ralph A. Coates


Scio, NY = Ralph A. Coates, 90, of 4078 Pine Street passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013 at the VA Nursing Home in Bath following a brief illness. He was born August 14, 1922 in Ulysses, PA the son of Delbert and Clara (Quackenbush) Coates. On November 18, 1948 in Rexville he married Louise Birmingham who survives. 

Ralph was a veteran of the U. S. Army during WWII, serving with the 94th Infantry Division as a machine gun squad leader. He was captured in 1945 and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He received several metals after the war including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a former employee of National Fuel Gas for 33 years; retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion, Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW and the Wellsville Elks Lodge #1495. 

Surviving in addition to his wife is one son, Gerry Coates of Solvang, CA, two granddaughters, Megan (Brian) Ricci and Arin (Billy) Meade, two great grand-daughters, Brooklyn and Hannah Ricci, two sisters, Myrtle (Bart) Baine of Horseheads and Betty (Ray) Pals of Effingham, IL as well as several nieces & nephews. He was an avid sports enthusiast and loved playing golf, baseball and softball.

Friends are invited to a graveside service with military honors on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 2:00 pm in Fairlawn Cemetery in Scio. Jessie Palmer Williams


Wellsville, NY - Jessie Palmer Williams, 92, of 1712 Stannards Road passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Highland Park Care Center in Wellsville following a brief illness. She was born September 28, 1920 in Angelica the daughter of late Fay and Louise (Neetz) Palmer. On February 11, 1941 in Angelica she married Paul W. Williams who predeceased her July 7, 2002.

Jessie was a graduate of Angelica High School. She was co-owner and operator of Williams Store in Allentown from 1941 to 1945 and Williams Store in Stannards from 1945 until her retirement in the 1980's. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, sewing, crocheting, embroidery, cooking, reading, cake decorating, especially wedding cakes, bird watching, her favorite being the hummingbird and visits from family and friends. She was an active member of the Stannards United Methodist Church, where she served as the Choir Director and was a member of several fund raising committees. She was also a past officer of the WSCS/UMW and a member of the Willing Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son, William (Cheryl) Williams and her daughter, Kathleen (Mark) Flint both of Wellsville, two grandsons, William (Wendy) Williams, Jr. of Trumansburg and Stephen (Kristi) Williams of Scio, a granddaughter, Lori (Trever) Levitt of Wellsville, a step-grandson, Charles (Glorianne) Flint of Bradenton, FL, 13 great-grandchildren, a sister, Ethel Palmer Graham of Hornell, a sister-in-law, Gertrude Palmer Peaslee of Allentown as well as several generations of nieces & nephews.

Jeanne E. Howbridge


Belmont, NY - Jeanne E. Howbridge, 95, of 10 McNinch Lane passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville with her daughter at her side. She was born May 12, 1917 in Hammondsport the daughter of the late Monroe and Bertha (Sedgwick) Ray. On December 21, 1946 she married Howard L. "Dave" Howbridge who predeceased her on October 19, 1979.

Jeanne was a graduate of Belmont High School. She was employed as a secretary for many years at the Allegany County Soil and Water Conservation Service, retiring in the 1970's. She was an active member of the Belmont United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, financial secretary for over 50 years and secretary of the Women's Society. She will be remembered for her precise and often witty minutes. She also served as a Trustee for the Belmont Free Library for several years. Jeanne was a loving and caring, daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend.

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy R. Howbridge of Belmont, two sisters, Dorothy Ray of Wellsville and Ruth (Joseph) Brown of Sudbury, MA, a sister-in-law, Betty Ray of Horseheads as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased in addition to her husband, by a brother, S. Bruce Ray.

Friends are invited to her funeral on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 11:00 am in the Belmont United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Hurd presiding. There will be no prior visitation and burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont. Brenda A. Fagan


Wellsville, NY - Brenda A. Fagan, age 65, of 237 O'Connor Street passed away on Monday, February 18, 2013, in her home. She was born on January 26, 1948 in Wellsville to Francis "Frank" and Madeline Padden Fagan.

Brenda was long time resident of Wellsville who enjoyed being in the kitchen at her group home watching all of the activities. She liked car rides, sitting outside, eating chocolate, eating cheezies and she especially enjoyed a cup of coffee. 

Survivors include: 2 brothers, David Fagan of Scio and John (Sandra) Fagan of Concorde, NC.; 4 sisters, Helen (Loren) LeBere of Ponteverda, FL., Frances Baham of Fairport, Mary Fagan of Wellsville and Suzanne "Suzie" Fagan of Wellsville; Several nieces, nephews and her extended family at ARC.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, March 9, 2013, from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A prayer service will be held at 10:30 am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 am at the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville. Phyllis Griswold Tincher


Hornell, NY - Phyllis Griswold Tincher, 83, of 1190 County Route 66 passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at St. James Hospital following a brief illness. She was born December 16, 1929 in the Town of Ward, the daughter of Ellsworth and Gladys (Cline) Watson. On February 24, 1951 in Belmont she married Frederick Griswold and on February 19, 1972 in Emporium, PA she married Conrad L. Tincher Jr. who predeceased her on September 13, 1999. 

Phyllis was a 1947 graduate of Alfred-Almond Central School and was a former resident of Genesee, PA. She was first employed as a telephone operator for New York Telephone in Wellsville. She later worked for North Main Lumber in Hornell and South Main Lumber in Wellsville. She attended the Belmont First Baptist Church and enjoyed playing card, crossword puzzles, sightseeing and yard sales.  

She is survived by 1 son, Frederick (Teresa) Griswold of Hornell, a step-son, Conrad L. Tincher III of Olean, three grandchildren, Jennifer L. Dineen, Brent Tincher and Kelly Tincher, two sisters, Ruth Watson of Olean and Shirley Morey of Hornell, two brothers, Lawrence (Bernice) Watson Sr. and Paul Watson both of Belmont, a sister-in-law, Joan Watson of Belmont as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Esther Watson and Virginia Tillman and two brothers, James and Raymond Watson and three sisters-in-law, Doritha, Joyce and Dorine Watson.

Dorathea M. Chind


Friendship, NY - Dorathea M. Chind, 95, of 6448 Pleasant Valley Road, a former long time resident of Belmont; passed away on Friday, February 8, 2013 at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. She was born August 23, 1917 in George, Iowa the daughter of Wilhelm and Amelia (Windt) Haack. On March 4, 1944 in the Chapel on the Corner in New York City she married Gustive Chind who predeceased her October 1, 1987. She was employed in two defense manufacturing plants during WW II and attended the Belmont First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three children, Shirley (Joe) Rondeau of Plain Dealing, LA, William (Isabelle) Chind of Cartersville, GA and Richard Chind of Richburg, NY, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren as well as several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Sara Chind in 2012 and two sisters.

Hartrick J. "Bud" Brownell Sr.


Wellsville, NY - Hartrick J. "Bud" Brownell Sr., age 85, of the 106 Road passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Jones Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on March 2, 1927 in
Alma to James H. and Flossie Schram Brownell. On July 28, 1947 he married Virginia Empson who predeceased him on December 14, 1992.

 Bud, who graduated from Wellsville High School, was a lifelong resident of the Wellsville Area. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Panama Canal Zone as a military policeman. After the service Bud worked in the oil fields for many years and then retired from the Rochester Button Factory. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish and trap. He was a charter member of the Alma Rod and Gun Club where he held the office of President for many years. In his spare time Bud grew potatoes that where know as "Buds Spuds".

Survivors include: 4 sons, Hartrick (Patty) "Butch" Brownell Jr., Larry (Kathy) Brownell, Gary Brownell and Mike (Sherry) Brownell; 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 3 great great grand children; a sister Phyllis Winborne; 2 brothers, Jack Brownell and Jim Brownell; several nieces and nephews.

Beside his loving wife he was predeceased by 3 sisters, Rose Hunt, Jean Farwell and Joyce Jackson; 2 brothers, Sam "Leon" Brownell and Richard "Dick" Brownell; a granddaughter, Monique Brownell.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, February 5, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. His funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday in the Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Miller presiding and burial in York's Corners Cemetery. Jason James Latham


Belmont, NY - Jason James Latham, 16, of 5938 Easton Road passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at home following a two year battle with cancer. He was born August 6, 1996 in Hornell the son of James and Anne (Sheroshick) Latham. 

Jason was a sophomore at Alfred-Almond Central School and was a member of the FFA. He was proud to be employed at EPX of Alfred/Hornell. He loved to work on the family farm, with a special interest in his chicken enterprise. He was an avid hunter who loved the outdoors and kayaking on Keuka Lake.

Surviving in addition to his parents, is his grandmother, Maxine Latham of Belmont, a brother, Michael Latham of Andover, a sister, Theresa Latham of Corning, two nephews, Christopher and Westin, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends, Kody Stinson, Sue Kennedy, Nikki Sekoll, Tanya and AJ Lehman, Tonia Tinker, Wade Olin, David Ermer, and Ellianna Chroniger. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Eugene Latham and his maternal grandparents, Louis and Ellen "Skip" Sheroshick.
