Wilma W. Swarthout


Wellsville, NY - Wilma W. Swarthout, 82, 5 Fairview Avenue passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Olean General Hospital following a courageous battle with many health issues.  She was born April 10, 1930 in Wellsville the daughter of the late Edward and Pearl (Willett) Whitney. On March 10, 1953 in Wellsville she married James L. Swarthout who survives. 

Wilma was a 1947 graduate of Wellsville High School. She was first employed at Silvers Clothing Store and later by Worthington Corporation as Manager of the Tabulation Room. After the birth of her daughter she returned to work at First Trust Union Bank and Kailbourn Supply in Wellsville as a secretary and bookkeeper. She was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed family gatherings, playing the piano, traveling, and the joy of winning at bingo and at the casino.   

Surviving in addition to her devoted husband is a loving daughter, Wendy (Jeff) Barrett of Old Orchard Beach, ME, 2 sisters, Gayle (Jim) Schober of North Tonawanda, NY and Reba (Tony) Vassallo of Circleville, OH, two sister-in-laws, Doris (Floyd) Mallory of Wellsville and Carolyn Huffsteader of Blairsville, GA. Also surviving is the 1st niece, Terry Benedict of Wellsville as well as many other nieces, nephews and special friends, including, Bunny Rahr and Phyllis Marrow both of California. She was predeceased by two brothers, Donald Whitney and Leonard Whitney and a sister-in-law, June Gensamer.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. A memorial celebration will follow at 3:00 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the SPCA Serving Allegany County, the Christian Temple, the Trinity Lutheran Church or the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
