Harland Robert Palmer

Wellsville, NY - Harland Robert Palmer of 15 Madison Street passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2011, at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born in Olean to G. Ambrose and Helen Palmer and was predeceased by his wife Virginia Beebe Palmer. Harland retired from the Allegany County BOCES.

Orlo S. Gelser

Friendship, NY - Orlo S. Gelser of the Byrnes Hill Road passed away on Tuesday, October 25, at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 19, 1926 in the Town of Grove to Arthur S. and Nora M. Dudley Gelser. On July 3, 1948 he married Marleah L. James who survives.

Orlo was a dairy farmer who later worked outside the farm. He worked for 10 years at the Farwell Feed Mill in Belmont, 8 years in the labor union and he retired from the Town of Friendship after working there for 13 years. Orlo enjoyed hunting and was a member of the local laborers union as well as a social member of both the Belmont and Friendship American Legion Posts.

Survivors include: 3 sons, Duane (Terry) Gelser of Dalton, Kenneth (Marsha) Gelser of Scio and Alan Gelser of Wellsville; 4 daughters, Janet (Allen) Ives of Wellsville, Susan (Garry) Pollock of Portville, Laura (Ricky) Jordan of Belmont and Christina (Mike) Christian of Holland; several grand and great grandchildren; his long time companion and friend, Donna Layman.

Orlo was predeceased by a son Ronald Gelser, a sister Alda Bryon and a nephew Marvin Byron.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, October 28, 2011, from 12 noon to 2 pm at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Belmont. Orlo's funeral will take place at 2 pm in the Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Kemp presiding. Burial will take place in Forest Hills Cemetery and memorials in Orlo's name may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. William C. "Bill" Prentice

Allentown, NY - William C. "Bill" Prentice, 51, of 6428 Pleasant Valley Road died unexpectedly on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at home. He was born September 27, 1960 in Neptune, NJ the son of Bernard and Wilma (Costigan) Prentice.

Bill was raised Neptune and had formerly resided in Whitesville and St. Petersburg, FL. He was employed as a logger for Baldwin's Forest Products of Wellsville, a mechanic for Bernie's Body Shop and Garage in Allentown and most recently for the Union Drilling Inc. of Fort Worth, TX. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Bolivar.

He is survived by four children, Charles Morales of San Diego, CA, Andrew Prentice of Wellsville, Rachel (William) Lundy of Richburg and Alexis Prentice of Hinsdale, two stepchildren, Renee Ray of Wellsville and Nicole Handmore of Allegany, five grandchildren, his father of Allentown, his mother of Wellsville, two brothers, Roy Prentice of Wellsville and Adam (Jeanie) Prentice of Allentown, two nephews, the mother of his children, Ixa Morales of Richburg and his girlfriend, Kate Dahill of the Town of Wirt. He was predeceased by a son, Ryan Prentice in 1978.

Betty H. Barnes

Farmington, NY - Betty H. Barnes passed away unexpectedly on October 11th, 2011, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 84. Predeceased by her devoted husband, Darwin Barnes of 56 years, her parents Leonard and Elizabeth Hambridge and her brother Lt. Leslie Hambridge. Survived by her daughters Ann O'Donnell, Gail (Dan) Bell, Nancy (Dale) Sherwood, grandchildren Jeffrey (Kate) Sherwood, Scott (Jen) Sherwood, Matthew Bell, great-grandson Ayden Sherwood, and her special companion "Scooby". Betty graduated from Wellsville High School and Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing. She was the first Wellsville Elementary School nurse and finished her nursing career in 1979 as Director of Nursing at Wellsville Highland Nursing Home. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church and St. Ann's Guild.

In accordance with Betty's wishes, there are no prior calling hours and a private interment will occur at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, Wellsville, NY.

Richard "Dickie" Gilbert Verlie

Wellsville, NY - Richard "Dickie" Gilbert Verlie of Railroad Ave. passed away on Monday, October 10, 2011, at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He was born on December 13, 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio to Frank J. and Mary Sokol Verlie.

Dickie was a long time resident of Wellsville were he worked for the Moose Lodge and also for the Elks Lodge. He worked many odd jobs over the years and enjoyed fishing as well as shooting pool. Dickie was a member of the Wellsville Moose Lodge and a former member of the Wellsville Elks Lodge.

Dickie is survived by a sister, Arlene Keefer and a brother, Edward Verlie; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jonathan Andrew Dahlgren

Wellsville, NY - Jonathan Andrew Dahlgren, 26, formerly of 358 East Dyke Street died on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 in Verona from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle/pedestrian accident. He was born January 29, 1985 in Hornell the son of Denis and Colleen (Searles) Dahlgren.

Jon was a 2003 graduate of Wellsville High School and received a Bachelor's Degree from St. Bonaventure University. He was currently employed by Maine Source, Inc. of North Syracuse. He had recently moved to North Syracuse to reside with his grandmother.

Many will remember Jon as an avid sports fan, forever loyal to the Buffalo Bills. He played volleyball and tennis while in high school and enjoyed several wonderful vacations with his family on the water in Northern New York.

Surviving in addition to his parents is a brother, Christopher Dahlgren of Syracuse, a sister, Erin Dahlgren of Wellsville, his maternal grandmother, Dorothy (Record) Searles of North Syracuse, four aunts, Colette (Tony) Leonard of Bridgeport, Ann Searles on Minoa, Kathy Searles of Mattydale and Debra (Glenn) Mattison of Wellsville, two uncles, Donald (Janice) Dahlgren and Terry (Linda Sherman) Dahlgren both of Wellsville, as well several cousins, other relatives and special friends.

Friends are invited to call on Sunday, October 9, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will be Monday at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church, 289 North Main Street in Wellsville with Rev. Ralph Eastlack presiding. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Allegany County United Way.
