Alice J. Meyers McHenry

Wellsville, NY - Alice J. Meyers McHenry's life ended on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Jones Memorial Hospital with her family at her side. My life was the best and most fulfilled life that anyone could wish for. I loved life and cherished each and everyday.

I was the proud mother of five daughters who will continue my love of life; Deborah Meyers (Blair) Buchholz of Wellsville, Steff Meyers (Rich) Miller of Sylacauga, AL, Valerie "Babe" (Lisa Hays) Meyers of Birmingham, AL, Arienne "Jo" Meyers (Casey) Conroy of York, PA and Karina "KC" Meyers Bronke of South Deerfield, MA. I am also the very proud grandmother to, Ashley, Georgia, Patrick, Ryan, Sarah, Daniel, Peter, Marissa and Johnathan, and step-children, Robert and Vicki.

I was born in Olean on October, 4, 1934 the daughter of Dr. Edmond and Faith (Neother) Osgood. My husbands, Les Meyers and Jim McHenry have predeceased me. I was raised in Belfast and graduated from Belfast High School. In my lifetime I worked as a dishwasher, cook and housekeeper. I was also employed at Lane's Drugs, Ponche's Red & White in Belfast, Dinnion Coil and the Pajama Factory in Fillmore. I found my purpose and second home in Wellsville working as a Children's Librarian at The David A. Howe Public Library. My job and the community of Wellsville were always a great source of joy in my life and always offered hope, strength, respect and a reason to fight to stay young. In my lifetime I enjoyed food, music, books and films. I thrived on the dark sound of thunder, rain and laughter. I loved life. I leave this message:
When you remember me
If you remember me
This isn't the way I want it to be
Or I'd be with you now
But wherever you go ~ my love goes with you.
Friends are invited to visit with my family on Friday, July 15, 2011 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. At my request, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations in my memory may be made to the organization of the donor's choice. To leave online condolences, please visit www.embserfuneralhome.com.

  1. Deb & sisters, It is not a surprise that your mom would write her own obit. God Bless her! "Allie D" was such a special person and so full of life. She brought smiles and love to everyone she met. If you knew her, you were truly blessed! We should all follow her in our love of life and enjoying it to the fullest. May you find comfort in knowing we will all see her again someday. You're in our prayers & thoughts. Love, Peggy (Winans) & Tony Kuras

I have such fond and warm memories of all my visits to hear stories and find books with Mrs.McHenry. She was one of those people that just glowed and lit up every room she walked in to. Mrs.McHenry was one of a kind, with a contagious smile and I am blessed to have known her.

My prayers to her family, she will truly be missed.

  6. I never knew Alice personally but I knew a lot about her from listening to my brother Richard Wightman talk about her. I am sure my brother will miss her as much as any member of her family. It is better to celebrate her life than to mourn her passing.

  7. We lived across from Alice for many years while I was growing up. Over the years, I have kept in contact with her and she even had my daughter for story time. I will always remember her wonderful laugh and how much she loved life. She was one of a kind and I will miss her.

  9. Jo & KC, and the rest of your family, I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. There are so many great things I remember about her. Her infectious smile and bubbling laughter. Even after I outgrew the childrens' section she would find time to visit when I stopped by. Your Mom managed to hook me on reading all sorts of books and it wasn't until I had my own children I truly appreciated what she did. Celebrate her life as you will carry her laughter and smiles with you forever. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you in your time of need.

  11. Everyone in Heaven is smiling now that Alice is there. What a wonderful lady - she gave a lot of children the gift of books and a good story. I can still see her wondering down Main Street dressed in a witches costume or as some other character smiling and waiving at everyone who honked or yelled her name Do not worry Alice a lot of us will be remembering you…

I had many memorable adventures in my immagination because of books she suggested. She will always be remembered with a fondness in my heart. My prayers are with all of her family at this time. God bless all of you.

  13. My dear sister Alice and niece-in-laws Deborah, Steff, Babe, KC, Joey and families.
I fell in love with you Alice the first time my brother brought you to meet the family. You
instantly became my "sister and dear friend"; and your daughters my neices. You helped me through some very difficult times and from our long talks I finally became to know how much my "big" brother loved his youngest sister.

Dear neices, I loved your Mom with all my heart. To say she was exceptional would be an
    understatement!
    One Person...
    One lifetime...
So many beautiful, fun and happy memories.

The world has lost someone very special.
But knowing Allie Jo she hasn't left us. but she is the shinning star we will see at night!
