Rose M. Wood

Wellsville, NY - Rose M. Wood, 96, of 2836 Lindy Lane passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born Rose Marie Shall at home in Oswayo, PA on June 26, 1913. She was the daughter of Ralph and Congetta (Brenell) Shall, Italian immigrants from Naples, Italy. She was raised in the Oswayo and Shinglehouse area and graduated from Shinglehouse High School in 1932. She then attended West Brook Business Academy in Olean and graduated from there in 1933.

On June 18, 1938 she married Eugene U. Wood in Wellsburg, West Virginia. They moved to Bolivar in 1941 where they raised their family. During that time she was employed with Hall's Department Store, Elsie Bartlett Insurance Company and the First Trust Bank, retiring from there in 1973. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Bolivar and a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville.

Rose is survived by two daughters, Concetta (Richard) Burrous of Sun City Center, FL and Nancy Quackenbush of Wellsville, her grandchildren, James Burrous of Ocean Springs, MS, Thomas Burrous of Haverhill, MA, Trina Papa of Boston, MA, Karen (Joseph) Cronin of Fairport, Joni (Jason) Neus of Geneseo, Jeni (Bryan) Barnes of Scottsville, her great grandchildren, Sarah Burrous, Alexandra Burrous, Nicolas Burrous, Katherine Cronin, Nicole Cronin, Alyssa Neus and Matthew Neus. She is also survived by a sister, Helen N. Shall of Cousderport, PA, a sister-in-law, Phyllis Shall of Oswayo, PA and several nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1987, her son-in-law, Terry Quackenbush in 1988 and her grand daughter-in-law, Rhonda Burrous in 2007.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., 34 W. State Street in Wellsville where the Rosary will be recited Thursday at 3:45 pm. Prayers will be offered on Friday, February 5th at 10:00 am in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 am in the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville with Rev. Sean DiMaria as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bolivar. Memorials can be made to St. Mary's Church in Bolivar, the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville or the Bolivar Ambulance Squad.

  1. A long time ago but I remember the family well as they would take me to Bolivar town team baseball games. Over the years I have often thought of Connie and Nancy. “Woodchuck”
